I forgot about the tales games.
Aside from being major cheesy, Symphonia was a darn good game, and the one for xbox360 wasn't bad. Never beat it though cuz I was borrowing it. Tales of hte Abyss was my favorite though.
Yeah if you ignore all the horrid dialog and story then symphonia wasnt bad, the music was excellent too; if you want a good tales game though that takes itself seriously, try destiny
Final Fantasy IX if definitely my favorite RPG of all time because it was the first RPG I ever really got into, and the first one I beat. My favorite in recent years is the Mass Effect series, by far.
Yeah FFIX was the first one I'd ever sat down and beat, too. I really hated RPG's up until that point because I'd played a few pieces of crap back in the early 90's that were just horrible, and I had just assumed that they were all like that or something. But as a teen I went to a friend's house and she was playing FFIX and I was blown away by the "coolness". Heh
1. Planescape: Torment
My all-time favorite RPG. Probably my favorite game ever. If left unchecked I could go on about this game all day, so I won't go into it. If you haven't played this game before, PLAY IT GODDAMNIT.
2. Mask of the Betrayer
NWN2 drags on and on, but it's still somewhat enjoyable; the expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, is when it gets fucking amazing. Amazing soundtrack that takes "epic fantasy" to the next level, and it really suits the culture in the region the game is centered in. The setting is richly detailed, the characters are some of the most complex and nuanced in any RPG,
3. KOTOR series
I just realized that my top 3 RPGs are all Chris Avellone RPGs(KOTOR II in this case), so I probably sound like a goddamn fangirl, but I don't give a fuck. KOTOR was a very enjoyable, well-rounded experience, but II really shines for me.
It had so many problems - even without all the cut content there are plenty of things that could have been implemented better. But it had so much potential. Instead of the usual "save the world" plot, it was a journey of introspection and self-discovery, like Planescape and Mask of the Betrayer.
Then there's Final Fantasy VI and IX, the Mother series, Breath of Fire 3/4, and Star Ocean 2(those two just because of nostalgia, I'm pretty sure. ;p).
Anything by BioWare, newer Bethesda titles, Mario & Luigi series, Earthbound/Mother, FF6-9, Zeldas(I don't care what you call them I'm listing them here anyways)... That's all I can come up with atm. I don't really play lots of RPGs and many of the good ones were released when I was a little kid in a non-anglophone country.
FF IX(the one that started my rpg love)
Tales of Eternia(the one I got read ToD2...)
legend of dragoon(this was the shit man, effin ps3 level cutscenes)
Dark Eternal: Dissolution(amazing eventing, scripting, graphics, etc.)
Chrono trigger(no words need to be said)
brave fencer musashi(damn awesome game)
FF4(classic)
maybe Lunar legend- I played the one on the GBA, and it was okay enough.
ff tactics advance(nice. horribly simple story though)
Golden sun 1 and 2= amazing rpg, especially for the GBA
rogue galaxy's okay. nothing big.
tactics ogre- sweet ass story. The one FFTA wanted to be.
Megaman zero series, strangely enough.
Kingdom hearts: chain of memery. I never actually finished the other 2, if you can believe it.
fire emblem series. awesome gameplay.
Riviera: the promised land
Summon night(GBA 1/2) was pretty okay.
Yggdra union- now this was amazing and amazingly long and amazingly hard. I'll tried playing this 4+ times, and I'm still not done(probably not even halfway...)
See, my problem with Tactics Ogre is that I played FFT first, which is basically TO2.0, so I just could not stand the graphics or interface.
Well, let's see:
FF1, 4, 6, and 9
Earthbound
Lunar 2 (Lunar: SSS not so much, even if I do have the Gahleon punching puppet and one of those coveted Nall dolls)
Wild ARMs 1 and 3 (2's translation was too schizophrenic to be enjoyable)
Suikoden 1 and 2 (3 is also pretty good but really hard for me to finish because it's too long-winded and pretentious; I don't need to see the same chapter three times, or be punished for beating a boss, thanks)
Soulblazer
Terranigma
Actraiser (may or may not actually count)
Vanguard Bandits is a game you don't hear too much about. It's pretty average, but Working Designs really pulled through and gave it a stellar localization, which is why it's one of my favorites in spite of its glaring shortcomings.
Mother 3 is one of my very favorite games of all time--the "Danny, the Champion of the World" of my favorite video games. Shigesato Itoi is a brilliant writer, and my hero. I'm glad he "became a good person" before production finished, though. It broke my heart enough without
having to fight Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo, brainwashed into being Pokey's lackey-friends for all eternity.
Lost Odyssey is my very favorite game. A lot of people don't like it. I have a hard time understanding why, but then, I also have a hard time understanding why people enjoy innovative battle systems and am perfectly fine with dudes lining up Redcoat style and walking two steps to attack. I think it goes both ways in that these same people have a hard time understanding why I enjoy the structure and presentation and subtle director's liberties and (dare I say, cynical as I am) the story, and it works both ways in that neither of us can really explain why the other doesn't think like us. I grew up with Hironobu Sakaguchi's writing and directing of games much like how some people grew up with Hitchcock's earliest short films or any countless number of fledgling authors' books, and how his storytelling style grew and matured over the years just blew me away.
On the other hand, I can't see why kids these days like that Persona series so much. Maybe I just don't "get" shooting yourself in the head, or Mecha Satan Fetuses, or Gods With Breast Implants, or something. And why people can't see through Enix's current cheap charade of crappiness is just beyond me, but if everyone was so good at calling bullshit, our unemployment rates would be inverted.
v IoG had some amazing music, but something about it just never got me the way the other two games did. Part of it is that it offended my inner OCD in that the Undersea Palace is glitched so you can't get ALL OF THE BONUSES in the entire game.
role playing game.
Leveling up(weapons)
plot blocks with bosses to beat.
Japanese
It's a good enough rpg in my book, although I guess, again, rpg is debatable.
technically it's a platformer because by and large the primary player requirement for rpgs is not ehc/reflexes
(not even fallout 3)
v Well, yeah, that's the point. You don't need reflexes or even finely-tuned controller-aiming skills for Fallout 3 because it has VATS. Megaman Zero has no "TAS autoplay when your level is high enough" option.
Megaman = Platformer, just because things can level up doesn't mean it's an RPG, and what does it being Japanese have to do with anything? TES: Oblivion is made in America... does that mean it isn't an RPG? o.O
Hmm, in terms of Final Fantasy games, I'd say IX and X are the best, people can try to tell me otherwise, I'll just disagree, these two are just, wow.
Other RPGs...
Disgaea 1 - 2 - 3 (Oyeah!)
Phantasy Star Portable (I'd say PSP2 too, but it isn't out... yet!)
I honestly can't think of many at the moment, but Disgaea and Phantasy Star are two of my favourite RPG franchises, I also quite like almost anything that BioWare shoot out, with a couple of exceptions, mainly NWN (Although I liked the sequel which wasn't by them o.O) and I've yet to play Mass Effect 2, although I've heard nothing but good things about it, maybe I'll pick it up soon.
