Plot-Synopsis
   Yoshi is a 16 year old high school student with everything he wouldn't want: parents who argue all the time, a bully that will never leave him in peace, a best friend who is nothing like him, failure at schoolwork and sports, and is in love with a girl who doesn't know he exists.
   Yoshi lives a somewhat empty existence.  He doesn't specialize in anything and has no goals.  He would be best described as a dreamer.  Every day is the same if not similar to him: go to school or just stay home and read.  He doesn't particularly dislike life; he just doesn't enjoy it.
   One day while walking home from school alone, he gets into a fatal accident of some sort which hospitalizes him. He can't remember how it happened, and dies in bed at the hospital due to blood loss. He has an out of body experiance and sees the hospital staff trying to resusitate him. While trying to figure out what's happening, he sees a darkly-cloaked figure next to him. The figure proceeds to tell Yoshi that he is a death deity who was there to take Yoshi to the afterlife. Yoshi rejects, saying he isn't ready to die yet. The death deity tells Yoshi that he may have a second chance, but at a price. The deity tells Yoshi that his death was the first in a string of murders that were to occur in his hometown, and most of the targets would be people Yoshi was close to. If Yoshi could find the killer in time and prevent the last death, Yoshi could stay alive. If he were to fail although, he would lose his life again. Yoshi looks at his body trying to be saved, and feels he has no choice but to agree.
   And with that, Yoshi's empty existance has become meaningful. Forced to walk this dangerous path just to stay alive, and to keep those close to him alive. What difficulties will he encounter in fighting fate?

The main/primary protagonist.  He enjoys reading books and slacking off.  Thinking about something, usually complex, is his favorite past-time.

Akio

  Description: Extroverted, interpersonal, athletic, creative
Yoshi's best friend.  They usually don't get along, but since they're both outcasts it gives them enough reason to hang out with each other.  Akio enjoys making jokes which are not funny and usually unfitting to any situation.

  Description:  Extroverted, interpersonal, passionate, creative
Akio's little sister and almost complete opposite to him.  She tries to watch over Akio and Yoshi so they don't get into more trouble then they normally do.

Hatsu

  Description: Extroverted, interpersonal, hot-headed, logical
Locally known bully and thug, Hatsu acts spontaneously doing whatever he wants.  To him life is nothing but a game to be played.  Hatsu often bullies and messes with Akio and Yoshi.

   Also for those who would inquire, this game is supposed to be like a japanese game made in english. Instead of speaking or writing japanese, it's in english. The culture is, however, japanese.

*** UPDATES ***
1-19-2009 - Fixed up the thread again. I am now continuing the project; slowly but surely.
1-12-2009 - Fixed up the thread. Nothing special though.
8/12/2008 - Two months later and I finally update...  My mapping improved and I have a mapper which is helping me, although he won't be able to help me much anymore.
6/27/2008 - First post edited to look better.  Not too much different though.
6/13/2008 - DEMO UP!!! (6/27 Temporarily removed)
6/12/2008 - Axerax's void logo up.
6/8/2008 - Some enemies can now shoot fireballs, and somewhat get in position from far away just to shoot at you. (I've got to make some sort of progress bar, but the combat system is like 40% complete.)
6/7/2008 - The synopsis changed almost completely.
             - Currently there is a somewhat effective jumping system, attack change system, 4 current attacks, some enemies can jump too or sprint.  Still trying to make enemies able to shoot or teleport but it won't be easy.

void is a game under Dawnsoft, an RMVX group led by me.
 
You need to work more on the story:
- Why does the Phantom kills Yoshi's grandfather?
- What does Hatsu has to do with the plot? He doesn't appear at all in it...
- Why do the characters have magic/telekinetic abilities?

The story is the thing I worked on the least up till now, and was planning to getting onto that after better perfecting the ABS (at least for the start of the game).  And I'm near done with that.

Yoshi and Hatsu are 2 out of the 5-ish main characters.  I'm not too sure why I put Hatsu instead of the others.  Probaly cause I like him more.  ^_^  I'll see if I could create a more developed, less retarded begining.  I too disliked the plot-synopsis I wrote.  I'm a self-proclaimed writer yet that was the best I could come out with for the start.  :/

I only mentioned the powers so people can know that the game utilizes an active battle system.  Like in any good game, things will develop into something interesting and bigger then how it started.

Woah, for someone who helped me with writing the base for LIFE, your story could use some explaining  :lol:

Firstly,

- What is this thing?
- Did the Phantom Kill the Grandfather to save the world from this thing?
- Who is Hatsu?
- Why does Yoshi dislike his grandad?
- What does the phantom do to Yoshi? rape?
- Who is the Phantom?

Also, I like the title screen. But the Logo could use some work imo.
 
I lack in photoshop. :P  And yeah, I just can't write up a good start.  It's probaly because I got a big test tomorrow and I'm out of it. >,>

EDIT:  I need some non-rtp sprites baaad also.  I guess I (and everyone else) will have to remember that I just started on this project around a week ago and was putting emphasis on the ABS before everything else.  I guess I'll also take an hour or two to polish this thread; give it a real story and so on.  Epic fail on my part. >,>

I don't know what made me write that horrible synopsis from before...  Wasn't thinking well I guess.

Synopsis changed, the other characters added.

Next update I'll show some 'epic' boss battles.  Maybe youtube it. ^_^

Edit:  Some monsters can actually use projectiles!!  It's a major step for great gameplay.  I haven't perfected some type of teleporting systems for monsters which do so, but I'm getting there.
 
Looks good if you need help for sprites and images count me in. As for your plot synopsis you mention who is the phantom when you described him as a death deity! was there something else aside from that? ^_^  oh well nice story and nice game project.
 
Lol...  Even though I said he is a death deity it doesn't really describe him.  He doesn't really introduce himself. >,>

I'll defintly be needing some graphics for this game.  A lot of people dislike RTP-like graphics, unlike me.  T,T
Also, apparently my game is not bad enough to be flamed or good enough to be praised.  As I was going through the other projects, I noticed one thing they had which I didn't: nice graphics.  I believe by the end of this week though I'll have something good enough to update and bump about.
 
Alright, I played it up to when you get to Yoshi's home(I got an UNABLE TO FIND PARALLAX thing), and I do not really like this game. First off, the Death Deity has no personality in her dialogue. What she says sounds pretentious, and it doesn't give the feel of a dark and omnious being. When you go to touch her hand, I feel that yoshi goes too fast, and it destroys the feeling of UNCERTAINTY that is trying to be expressed. As for the battle system, I quite liked it, except for the fact I do not understand how the hell the SPIRIT ORB works at all! All I see is Rei something something! and suddenly pyrokenesis gets a new look! You've tried to get a beginner's feel to the game, but you do not explain enough, and I don't like it.
If you want me to beta test, I can give you IN-DEPTH advice for later demos.

I agree with most everything you said.  Yoshi was too quick to accept the phantom's deal, and the phantom really does act with zero personality and has bad dialogue.  I forgot to change the name of "rei kai shield".  That was a random, temporary name.  Also, the spirit orb is undeveloped, and later on when other characters use it, it changes.  For Yoshi, it's like a bright, cutting shield, and different for the others.
I guess that I did a bad job transitioning what I had in my head into the game, but remember I did/am doing everything.  Some things got past me. >,>
Next update I'll fix up the stuff you mentioned and whatever I see needs fixing.

Final note:  Can you tell me exactly when you got the error? I don't want everyone else to get the same error.

Is it just me or does the story here seem a lot like Yu Yu Hakusho? Kid dies for practically the same reason, meets a guy in the afterlife, and blah blah. I don't think you got it from the show, but it's awfully close...Perhaps making a more original death for Yoshi, and his encounter with the death deity a little less random would help disambiguate this from the ol' anime Yu Yu Hakusho.

If you've never seen the show, I understand, but the similarities are keen and you should know that - to prevent further comments on the matter.

You have good focus on the project and the gameplay looks real nice, so keep up the good work.

Sorry for the lack of constructive criticism, but the house at the end of the new screenshots is freaking massive.
 
@Alicix: Lol yeah, I tried to make it as random as possible yet not too stupid.

@woratana: I've been extremely lazy, but will re-release a better demo eventually.

@Mundane: Thanks for saying I was ripping off Yu Yu Hakusho in a nice way.  Yu Yu Hakusho is a basis for this story, although originally Yoshi was "murdered" by a serial killer (don't ask why; the situation was different).  I didn't really try to make another way to die until the last minute, and getting run over is a much nicer way to die over geting stabbed to death.  I don't like YYH so I didn't rip off it.  Just ended up looking that way.  Also, this story is more based off Bleach and since Bleach is based of YYH, similarities occured.

@SPN: Yes, the house is huger then it should be.  I should make it smaller, and probaly will later.  I'm not so good at VX mapping.  Also, your reply is spam due to "lack of constructive criticism" as you noted yourself and I'd rather not have that in my thread.  If you don't have anything good (constructive) to say, or a better way to say it, it's better not to say it at all.  In my opinion.
 
Well everything nowadays has its inspirations and similarities and you have a lot of good things going gameplay wise. I'll be keeping an eye out for this one.
 
So, I went to sleep at like 6 last night and woke up just now thinking about this game, and figured out what was holding me back:  my dislike for making large maps.  I can't express how frustrated I feel when making a big map from scratch.  I'm no pro mapper, especially for RMVX, and it takes a lot out of me to make a map look good.  The worst thing is that this game takes place "outdoors" in large environments (I'm thinking about the battes/conflicts mostly).  Not only will I have to make MANY large maps, but I'll also have to make them make sense to the story and have good stuff around every corner (I hate walking a lot through empty fields/forest just to get from one place to another in RPGs.  I like/plan for something kinda like how in Chrono Trigger as you walked through the map, there were items around and different enemies, along with secret doors and traps.).

My point with this post was to announce that what I'm going to need to make the game to my liking will require too much of my time and hard work without a mapper.  I removed the first demo because it was too short and had a few errors.  Being short is bad enough but having errors which may cause it to crash kills it.  My next update(s) will be full of content and hopefully a good demo.
This was my announcement announcing that this topic will gather dust as I try to figure out how I'm going to get past this mapping-barrier I've hit.
 
Your maps need a lot of work, I am willing to help in this area if there was someway to send me your game I could revamp them for you.

Could also send you my test game as proof of good mapping skills.

Edit: If you needed help with Photoshop then I can help you there too.
 
Screenshots updated.  They're a major improvement over the older screenshots and I felt I would be doing this thread bad if I let it sink further down the pages.

As of late, the ABS is undergoing some changes since apparently the older one was causing a lot of lag.

I've also been practicing on spriting and mapping because I don't want this to be a full RTP game.

Story and characters may need improving by me but I'll take whatever criticism anyone has about what's currently listed.  I removed the old screenshots too because I was ashamed of them so let me know if the current ones are good or not, even though they seem kind of random.  I have to really add more detail into the story so it's not so hard to take in. :/
