Videogame MIDI Remix Competition (Week ONE)

MIDI REMIX COMPETITION I

Back before I used RPGXP, I used to make music. Starting out, I sucked horribly. Then, I was told to by one of my friends to try to rearrange and create remixes of popular MIDIS from popular videogames. I tried it out, and I learned a thing or two from looking at the notes and messing around with the sounds. While I may not of been the greatest, ( I'm still not), I an 10x better than I originally started out as.

  • This competion is focused on music and rearranging notes, adding sounds, and finding a balance of music to create an original song from a popular videogame.

    Scoring
Scores can be affected by (but are not determined based on) the following:
    • Mood
    • How well your song flows
    • Originality and creativity
    • How well you meet the guidelines

    Sounds Simple Enough?

    Rules
    • You must stick with the MIDI. You are trying to incorporate our own beat into a popular tune
    • You may add anything you want to the MIDI.
    • You can rearrange the notes to however you see fit
    • Timeline
You will have 2 weeks from when the competition begins. After those 2 weeks, I will post your song on this thread for people to hear. There will be a few days of judging. After those few days, the results will be posted.
    • Results
After a round is over, I will post the results on who got 1st, 2nd, 3rd, et al. Results will be one a scale from 1 to 100, with 100 being the best and 1 being the absolute worst.

      Contestants

      • Holk
      • Gulch666
      • DeMOnFiRe
      • Twirly
      • Velocir_X

      Other Information
      • Thank you Zeriab, you're my inspiration for this competition too!
      • I will clarify any questions or concerns anyone has!
      • Thank you Glitchfinder for this rubric!

If you have any questions or concerns, please ask. :)

1. Do we get to pick our own song?
2. Can we use soundfonts?
3. Does it have to retain the same feel as the original?

Holk...I hope thats not you in your AVI :)

1. nope, thats the fun part for me. :)
2. Sure whatever floats your boat.
3. Nope, as long as ya have the notes and I can recognize the song, you can do whatever ya want. :)

Ok, cool. I like this idea. Count me in.

Also, that isn't me in my av, it's from a youtube video of a kid flipping out because his parents canceled his WoW subscription.

sign me up, but wait, you're picking the song we remix?

id say you should do a category, like take for instance, fighting games, or platformer, and we have to pick a song from a game in that category, and you could do a new competition once a month or so with a new category, that way it gives us a bit more room to be original.

but anyway, im on board whatever you do, its been a while since i remixed a song

yes I am, its already picked. Trust me, its pretty famous and its going to be a tad difficult. :) But I have faith in you guys. :)

are you gonna post the midi for us to DL? so we all start out with the same one. since we're going to be all remixing the same song.

i really would prefer a category of game time, even maybe put a time (when the game was made) constraint, like: 1986-1990 platformer

see that would ruin the whole point of the competition. The whole point is for everyone to create a new song out of a popular one. ITs about creating your own beat to the song. Those who slack off will sound similar. I totally understand what your saying, but as said above it would ruin what the competition stands for. :)

apparently i dont fully understand what the competition is. but im still on board, ill just take the midi and do something awesome with it. im hoping its fairly complex, but has room to layer up some original stuff....and im hoping its 8-16 bit era. im a fan of the classics

yep, thats the jist of it. Remember you can rearrange notes and what not too, just make it so I can reconize the original song. :)

I'm not sure which song you're having us do. I'll judge this time around, but I'll be in on your next comp.

Looking forward to hearing all of your pieces! ^^

I would take part if I wouldn't go on holiday in 1 week :[ I could make one song though, never tried making music :O

well theres a two week deadline and this is perfectly fine if you've never made music before. To me, once you get the hang of it, its not that hard. Its a learning experience anyone. I would be honored if you would join Twirly. :)

Just a little heads up;

My computer has contracted some odd virus that caused my soundcard to be undetectable. I'm still working on a solution, but if worst comes to worst, I'll have to reformat. I'm going to try to have it fixed in a day or two, but I'll let you know if I can't.
