Two completely self-made battlers.

Hello, I'm new here, for now just asking for critique of graphics.

I'm trying a way of making battlers that would work better for me than just the generic pixel by pixel at 800% zoom in MSPaint (which works OK for sprites.)
I draw a small picture and then scan it, then replace the main lines with outlines, then fill in the rest with shading.  A bit of photoshop smudging smooths it out, and I have made these two battlers so far using this method.

Okay, shading changed, light source from the left.  Does this look better now?  Anything else that needs changing?

Pillooooooow shaaaaaaaaaaading.  The hair on both could use more highlights, and everything needs to not be pillow shaded.

Okay, not entirely sure what that means.  Is that just that they are darker on the sides rather, than shaded by light or something?
