Marcus, no. Final Fantasies have great music and great storyline. Also keep in mind, iirc, Final Fantasy I was the first RPG ever created on the NES (I might be wrong, so correct me if I am).

Yeah... you're pretty wrong. I'm certain Dragon Quest wasn't even the first RPG and it predates Final Fantasy by almost a year. While storyline and music boils down to opinion, I've just gotten tired of seeing flamboyantly dressed Gackt look-alikes running around and slapping monsters with swords while prattling on about "justice" and "free will" and other typical Japanese prose themes.

I've played every single Final Fantasy but FF tactics is the only one I've been able to take seriously as having an excellent plot and setting. I'm glad the PSP version is getting a new translation because the PS1 translation was terrible.

You've pretty much said everything I think about FF games....for the most part. FF12 was half decent, despite the fact that Vaan looked like an Alladin wanna-be with an extra dose of estrogen.

The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind (wth Bloodmoon and Tribunal and lots of patches)
Final Fantasy VII
Baldur's Gate II : Shadows of Amn (With Throne of Bhaal)
Arcanum
Legend of Zelda
Arx Fatalis
Disciples II (it's not properly an RPG )

If you want to do something on at least ONE old-school rpg, how about the Shining Force series? Theyve gone to the dogs nowadays, but back when they had a few awesome games. They were sorta like FF for the genesis, but not really.

It's about time someone actually knows games like Arcanum and Arx Fatalis here. Disciples too, but that one is less awesome than the other ones.

I don't think I put this before, but Gothic 2 is a big favorite of mine, as are the whole fallout series (yes including tactics, the complete lack of the free-roaming atmosphere that basically IS fallout didn't bother me as much as it bothered others, but hey it's not like they were making fallout 3 right?)

Dopples you misunderstood me. I meant that a lot of people criticize fallout tactics for not being fallout 3. Not that fallout 3 will never be made.

Also I'm of the mindset it probably may as well not be, since Bethesda is making it. I found a quote earlier from someone that worked at bethesda about there not being any children in Oblivion. He said they caused too many development problems, but they're looking to fix that in fallout 3. As if fallout 3 is some extension of the elder scrolls. Bah. (yay offtopic)

Anyways, there's a lot of excellent PC games from the era of baldur's gate and whatnot. Gothic, Arcanum, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, ... others that aren't coming to mind... Heroes of Might and Magic comes up, but I never played that much.

In no actual order other than the order they came to mind:

Final Fantasy IV (2 US), though I prefer the "hardtype"
Suikoden II
Crono Trigger
Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2)
Persona
Xenogears
Kingdom Hearts II
Wild Arms
Ultima IV
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (oh uh, I think I just gave away my age again)
Dragon Quest IV

Yeah, that's 10. Okay, I'm done here.

Here's ten of mine, since you never specified if you wanted console-only, I'll list some PC games too;

~Console RPGs~
Final Fantasy VI (or III, however you wanna look at it)
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears

~PC RPGs~
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and it's sequel.
Torment

~Tactical RPGs~
Ogre Tactics (or Battle, can't remember which I played but it was awesome)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Disgaea (The second Disgaea had some upgrades system-wise, but the first is still the best)

Most of these you probably know, but for the sake of looking at how a story should be written and how dialogue should flow, check out Torment. Apparently not a lot of people know it exists and that is a shame, it's a great game and deserves attention.

I know I already gave ten, but Fallout...it's important to list Fallout. I haven't played it myself because I just now got a chance to play PC games, but watching my husband play is enough for me. The dialogue from the NPCs always cracks me up and the gameplay just looks like fun.

Shining In The Darkness from the Megadrive. I have a thing for Dungeon Crawlers. It had trippy music, some pretty animation, a decent plot. I suppose it's not that well-known though.

Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Arcanum, Fallout, etc are probably what you're looking for. World Of Warcraft is a great example to, although the only thing you could probably salvage from that as a positive aspect for an offline game is the freedom to roam where you want and not be bound to specific areas.

Arx would have been good if it weren't for the bajillions of bugs. I got to the last level and realized one of the Akbaa priests in the previous area got away and he had the last stone I needed to open the stupid door. Why would they make you use items that you wouldn't normally even think about picking up to access the final boss? One of the stones I dropped off in a random area because I ran out of space for my loot and it took me 2 hours to find it.

With that said, my opinion on Fallout 3 is different from most. Honestly, I don't care if fallout does turn into Oblivion: A Post-Nuclear Adventure. To me, fallout was about the great setting, atmosphere, and dialog; as long as those remain in it, I wouldn't care if it were a point n' click adventure game.

Arcanum is one of the greatest things that ever happened anywhere, and its a shame it didn't do well and squash all hopes of ever seeing a sequel :(

I liked the Fallout games, but the main plot-line was always so short.

I would be surprised if World of Warcraft didn't make it onto a Top RPGs list, due to it being -the- top RPG.

But yes, Arcanum and Fallout are good games. I love the story line twist in Fallout 2 regarding the story in Fallout 1

Where the hero from Fallout 2 goes back in time and breaks the water-chip which is what started Fallout 1

I dunno. I really liked the systems for fallout. I admit the atmosphere and all that jazz are the most important (and I feel bethesda will probably screw that up as well) aspect, but I really did like the character creation thing, the perks, all that stuff. You kind of have to if you like fallout tactics, since that was like all it had going for it.

Oh also yeah Arx Fatalis had a lot of bad points. I just really liked how the game was done. Drawing your silly little magic, everything's all underground, it was fun.

Also I find world of warcraft incredibly boring prexus, I played it for two weeks, and I just couldn't stand it. I don't get the allure, it's basically just 'pick a strategy, repeat endlessly', except that if you happen to lure more than 2 monsters then you need to run. woo. I suppose one could make the argument that partying is where it's at, but I fail to see the great allure in that either.

Whether or not you or any other mass of people believe it to be boring (many people hate it), it is globally accepted as the most popular MMO, with record breaking number of subscriptions and sales. Even the expansion pack outsold most other MMOs.
