Top RPG Games

I want to put together a little report for a personal project I'm working on. Right now I'm looking for some game titles. What I want are the top 7-10 RPGs. I know this list is diffrent for everyone, i'm looking for the titles that are on most lists - also the game titles that are really the best known story-line wise. And the games that people tent to copy the most, very often targeted by fan game makers.

Once I have this list I'm going to look at the very basics of the plot of each one and look at what it is that people like about it and why they like to copy it so much.

Final Fantasy VII
Pokemon
and
The Legend of Zelda
are definatly going on my list, but the other titles I've ran accross I'm not so sure of. What do you think?

I moved this to video games because it's about video games. etc.

Anyways, the common RPGs that show up on top tens...

Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Tales of Symphonia
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
and...

Yeah I can't really think of other ones, I just keep coming up with things that I like. Like Star Ocean, the Fallout games, Baldur's Gate, Arcanum, those sorts of things.

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
Summon Knight I
Summon Knight II
Dark Chronicles (aka Dark Cloud II)

He's looking for ones that everyone loves and show up all the time... Most people haven't even heard of Summon Knight.

FINAL FANTASY VI
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
FINAL FANTASY IX
Dragon Quest VIII
Romancing SaGa -

I know there are a ton more. I will edit this post once I find out what they are...

What people will mention the most?

Star Ocean 2
Star Ocean 3
FFIV, VI, VII
Xenogears
Xenosaga
Dragon Quest
Persona
Wild Arms
Grandia
Breath Of Fire
Phantasy Star something

This is just what I think will be mentioned the most.

Similarly to Murcutio (we agree on 8 games?), I'm betting on:

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Breath of Fire 3
Wild ARMs
Xenogears
Star Ocean 2
Grandia
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana

Runners-up would probably include Suikoden 2 or 3, Legend of Mana, and a handful of others.

My List:

Final Fantasy (IV VI VII)
Pokemon (Any)
The Legend of Zelda (Not an RPG, but often copied)
Chrono Trigger
Mana Series
Dragon Warrior/Quest Series

I liked Xenogears, but I wasn't sure if it was ever really "mainstream", and I couldn't tell you the story off the top of my head if I had to. Am I in the minority here?

What do most people think of Dragon Warrior? I read it's one of the top series in Japan, but I see it listed here a total of no times. I personaly only know of the little blue goo mascot of the series.

Between the Breath of Fire & Wild ARMs series, what series do you think is more known, are far as the stoey goes and such. I never quite liked these 2 so I don't know much about them.

Xenogears is considered a great game by many players. Dragon Warrior isn't. In America, it's definitely a cult favorite, whereas in Japan it outsells Final Fantasy.

I think Breath of Fire is more well known than Wild Arms, but both are considered top series.

I can't believe I forgot Suikoden 2 and the Mana series. ><

Tales of Symphonia
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1/2
Kingdom Hearts
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Seiken Dentetsu III

I've watched my brother play (I was pretty young and I sucked at RPG'S vack then) all the way Chrono Cross and FFVII as well as FFX. Those games were pretty sweet. Also, bits of Legend of Dragoon.

I myself have played Golden Sun + The Lost Age, FFX, Kingdom Hearts I & II, and a small bit of Tales of Symphonia, otherwise I'm actually much less of an RPG gamer.

Kingdom Hearts II
Chrono Trigger (Even tho I couldnt finish it...)
Shadow Hearts II
Breath Of Fire II
Suikoden
Breath Of Fire I

In that order are my favourites!

I'll save you the trouble of composing a list by saying "Final Fantasy" will probably take up every spot. Why? Because it made spikey haired, emotional-teenagers cool. People emulate "cool", thus every idiot who thinks he can write or draw and plays nothing but Square products will most likely have 17 year old veteran soldiers with big swords and mysterious, angst ridden pasts running around a generic fantasy universe with a dash of sci-fi and guns (although people will still use swords, umbrellas, sticks, whatever).

Heck, you want an accurate list as far as popularity and sales go? You better put down Wizardry, Ultima, and Might and Magic down. No Japanese RPG series, not even Final Fantasy, has seen as many sales as one of those games in its heyday and this is coming from both American and Japanese gamers. Ultima inspired the original Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy (anyone who's played Ultima IV and Dragon Quest side-by-side will see the similarities)
and a game called Etrian Oddyseey/Yggdrasil Labrynth recently came out in Japan and America by Atlus that was pretty much a homage to the classic "make-your-own-map" Wizardry days.

It's a shame the original developers have all moved on and the games have been forgotten in the sea of unoriginal garbage that clutters our harddrives... where was this rant going? I forgot.

Hey look, pie!

Final Fantasy VII is bandwagoned as one of the best RPGs (Final Fantasy wise). Although I like it, my favorite RPGs are:
Final Fantasy VI
Diablo II/Lord of Destruction (MMO, but bleh, its a pretty epic game)
Chrono Trigger/Cross (Cross has good music, therefore, it wins)
Kingdom Hearts Dos (it takes a lot for me to like a game that has Disney characters in it)
Final Fantasy XI (Another MMO, but still a nice game)
Final Fantasy XII (Who doesn't love Penelo?)
Tales of Symphonia

Marcus, no. Final Fantasies have great music and great storyline. Also keep in mind, iirc, Final Fantasy I was the first RPG ever created on the NES (I might be wrong, so correct me if I am).

But if you want, call me an idiot for loving Final Fantasy :p.
