I'm a shift manager of a pizza place, and our drivers are paid 2 dollars less then ohios min. wage. When we take an order for delivery, we add a extra two dollars to the price, referred to as the Delivery Charge. This is to help our drivers cost of fuel, repairs to their cars, etc etc. This is NOT tip, contrary to the 5 customers in the 2 years I've worked there claim it is. Yes, if a driver takes 2 deliveries an hour, he does make more money minimum wage here, but he also has to pay for gas used that day, or things of that nature.
The area I live in, and where I work, is possibly full of the worst kind of people ever. Rude, arrogant, uneducated people. Rednecks in a northern state? Yes. Some people tip more, some don't tip much, and some don't tip at all.
If a customer's order comes to 15.49, which is large 1 item pizza plus the charge, and pays with a 20 dollar bill, they sometimes get their change back, and hand the driver a buck or two. Sometimes they say keep the change. 4 dollars and 51 cent tip? It's pretty good. The problem with being a driver in my area is that people are cheap, and for some reason, lots of welfare people order. (I got asked twice this week if we accept food stamps. No.) So, tips are not very good.
I say tip, even it's a small amount. I don't like hearing about people at the door who will stand and wait for that 10 cents in charge and small the door in the drivers face.
