Anaryu - totally LOVE battle systems like that. They make you pay more attention and even once you memorize moves and don't pay as much attention it's a hundred times more fun than the default enter-mashing button systems that most people use (even when they have other systems in there).

Especially if it's scripted instead of event driven (events being a fair bit more fussy and a little less fiddling friendly than a script), but either way, bravo :)

(I've been quiet on the forums lately as I'm still trying to learn to sprite, do decent cliffs and stuff and there is very little info on the web regarding pixel art texturing... hoping showkaizers tutorial will help, so let's all pile on him and poke him til he posts it up, yarrr!)

@Despain: I'm still trying to figure out what you're doing from all the enticing screens you're posting all over. You're working on something clever, I just can't tell what yet! ¬_¬

Edit @Despain: Sorry for the fuzziness, I knew it was like that, but the custom menu and such make me think you've got a cool angle for your game, guess I'll just have to wait... well, 2 weeks. :)

It's just my two-week contest game. Gamble is a spinoff of Sandfall in a similar way that Prize was, but as a game it'll have more substance, though it won't have any actual battling.

And yes, there will be a very cool and unique angle to it. ;)

@Anaryu: Battle systems looks nice! That will add quite a bit of variety ^_^ I can't wait to see that in action!

@Despain: Good message system. Good Mapping. Good Job :)

A screen to show that I'm also making some progress on my contest entry, small as it may be. In the background is my city-in-progress. (Which is coming along much slower than I'd like ':| )

@Anaryu: Your system's great, despite the fact that I died my first time play it.

@Despain: I'm looking forward to your entry.

EDIT: I should add that icon names are placeholders.

New Battle System (95% complete, just need to make enemies die properly and system itself is done).

It's not turn based either, although you cannot "move" around, so it's technically not an ABS either.

The menus on the same side of the screen as you are, the lower one shows all of the 4 skills (or 3 in this case) you have equipped, and the upper left updates as you press arrow keys, and will display the name of a skill if you type in the correct order. Pressing Enter will launch the combo. Holding Esc/B will "defend" you against attacks.

If attacked for a period of time after you attack (based on your AGI) you cannot block. The third bar is your "break" bar which fills up differently based on the skill used, once filled, you take full damage (5x as much) until 3 turns have passed.

The icon next to the skill name shows what "class" of attack it is: Power (STR base), Fighting (DEX based), or Energy (INT based) the more you use of one type of attack, the slower their break gauge will go up, so spamming a high-break Power move will have you doing piddly break damage to them in about 2-3 turns.

Skills can also have delays after, so if you use a powerful skill you will be unable to defend for an amount of time afterwards (customizable by attack).

WTF? This looks like my battle system, but mine sucks compared to that one.

I wanna play that game, demo... demo... demo... ':|

@Despain: the message system and that windowskin (Anaryu too) looks really familiar to me. Is that the one...?

To answer Myonosken's question: Because that's what this thread is for. I made a map and needed opinions on it.

I decided to change the windowskin for my Hud... I need to know which of these is better...

Notes: The screen tone is different because I have a weather system I made in place, the weather changes randomly and with it the brightness. The sun has gone behind the clouds in the second screenie.

@GameRage: I got that Windowskin from Despain's old weekend game entry: Prize, back when I was working on Outlaw City. It's simplicity and smooth feeling has had me using it very often in games where I'm allowed to script things. :)

I much prefer the first windowskin. Don't ask me why: I simply do.

Another shot from the LotD.

Questions:

What does "DEF Broken!" mean?

Why does that third bar never empty/fill? What is it?

Why do the names turn red/orange? What does that indicate? Are the ones on the left the player skills, and the ones on the right enemy skills? Why should you be able to see the enemy's skills if it is? Is the enemy that friendly that he tells you all his abilities and how to do them before hand?
