The english version was TERRIBLE when the song was translated they had to elongate the vowels and shit because there werent enough syllables to spread across the notes

it made want to punch SE i mean just KEEP THE FUCKING JAP VERSION its not like you cater to ten year olds who dont have taste in the japanese culture OH WAIT A SECOND.

I love alot of utada's songs but her english stuff makes me want to slap her (Simple and Clean and Devil inside were like her ONLY exceptions)

I haven't heard Utada's english songs nor do I care, but her english isn't as bad as most Jpop stars (all three songs of hers I've heard that is.) This is probably because she was born and raised in New York... Which... Probably helps with her pronunciation. I remember Sanctuary being composed first, which is why Sanctuary isn't an overproduced bukkake of shit.

I don't care about arguing personal taste over what version sounds better, needless to say elongated syllables have never been a problem since many bands have created songs that contain changes in pitch or chord progression over a single syllable. However adding way too many fucking instruments and creating a crowded mess of sound (the defining quality of Jpop) is a negative factor and the only meaningful difference between the two songs.

And actually, if you listen to the two songs you'll notice she elongates the same syllables. She does that weird held pitch shift in both the English and Japanese versions so I dunno wtf you're talking about.

As for why they're included in the game I have no idea, other than Nomura heard an Utada song in the office one day and decided he wanted to bang her. Not having the social or mental skills to do this in person, he sneakily decided to arbitrarily have her make a song for KH (a game he was charged with making because every other developer at SE looked at the design doc and went "fuck this shit". In fact, to this day Tetsuya is still the crappy little lap dog of Square, who desperately wants to direct his own real FF, but will never be able to because the producers at Square know it'll become crap. So instead we get his shitty little side quasi-FF projects, but I digress.)

Succeeding in luring her over to Square to make a song for his weeaboo female ejaculate inducing Disney/Post FFVII flipper baby, Tetsuya failed in keeping the zipper to his pants open and drove Utada away in disgust (this caused an increased paranoia and obsession with zippers, something that would later become a trademark in ALL Nomura character designs from that point on... Aside from being Cloud with a different hair color.) Nomura however, could not be discouraged. Knowing Utada's love for money and shiny jangly things to put in her vagoo, Nomura convinced her to do a second song for his next game, but failed again to invade her "Midgar Reactor." Depressed and broken, he was left with having to bone GACKT (AKA: the Japanese entertainment industry's "town bicycle.") GACKT went on record stating how proud he was to work with Nomura and wear an Utada skin suit during the production of Dirge of Cerberus.

Nomura was too late however in discovering that by murdering Utada and creating a skin suit of her flesh, that she could no longer make shitty Jpop songs for his pretentious and terribly written video games (like the enigmatic "Kingdom Hearts 38 Days after the 24 Hours of Night", co-produced by h.a.n.d.j.o.b.) This is why all of his retarded and impossible to remember KH offshoots do not feature her music. GACKT is also too busy pretending to be a schizophrenic homosexual samurai and could not be reached for comment.

I was saying that almost each note in the jap version has a syllable on the note, where as the translation makes up for a lack of them?? which is right, and most jpop translations do that in english, which is why they suck.

lets stop going off topic.

moog. dude. the english version is the original version! it was originally written in english, and later translated into japanese. :0

english version is better imo. unlike her hundreds of carbon copies, utada hikaru speaks perfect english, so her english songs are actually really cool when the lyrics dont suck (see: everything on exodus!). ultra blue was dope the whole way through and then out of nowhere its like... 'is that the kingdom hearts song?'. its just weird, man. the song is so not her, and you can totally tell it was written for that gay ass game. not that the song isn't good, its easily one of my favorite pop-star-in-a-video-game songs.

and talking about game music in a game music thread is hardly offtopic!

I understand that now, but after ixis post I was talking about the generalization of jpop transfered to english songs. I get alllll of that, I mean that personally japanese to english songs have very irregular strains on the notes and shit.

Personally I think Passion flows better than Sanctuary, although yes, her english vocals are excellent. (Tokyo Nights was a good mix personally).

It does when it starts to become Utada Hikaru discussion in a video game thread. (Alot of threads in this forum do that and its tiresome to see)

you're all faggots.

okay well I'm not going to put mine in any order because I have trouble picking favourites, so bear with me! these aren't in any order and there may not be ten of them.

x. Goemon's Great Adventure - Burning My Soul
Call me a fag for liking something in japanese style from a game that's very japanese (not the kind of japanese most japfags like but still) but I still think this is a pretty solid piece. The tune is catchy, and it goes really well ingame as you're running around smashing things in the face.

x. 3D Galax - Title Theme
It's just very catchy. That's about it. This might be an arrangement or something, but the tune hasn't changed at all so that's okay. dubmood's arrangement is pretty good too you should check it out if you wanna.

x. Streets of Rage 2 - Stage One
Man, why isn't there more old music on this list? The 80s and 90s had some pretty good stuff, especially Genesis-wise. This theme just conjures the idea of walking along a dim street at night punching hoods out as you go really well, and is fairly catchy on its own. And as a bonus, you can play as Hoopz Barkley!

x. Super Mario RPG - Battle With Smithy, Normal Battle, Armed Battle, Booster Hill, Forest Maze, My Name's Booster!, probably a bunch of others.
What can I say? It was an incredibly solid game with a good soundtrack, and it's got a lot of good nostalgia for me. I'd probably list out most of the soundtrack if I had the time.

x. Animal Crossing - Everything K.K.
They're generally very well-composed and cover a lot of genres. Youtube didn't have any good singles, so I copped out and chose them all.

x. Live A Live - Megalomania, Knock You Down!, Wanderer, Wanderer, It's Fine Weather!, Cry A Live (begins at 2:02)
Another very solid game, music-wise. They're just all really catchy, especially the first four. Listen to them. And Cry A Live is just really pretty.

that's all for now, I'll probably have more later.
