THE BEST VIDEO GAME MUSIC OF ALL FUCKING TIME NIGGERS

Here's my top 10 list that isn't filled entirely with Japanese shit but I give my props.  These aren't in any particular order because I like them all evenly.

10: Deus Ex Theme - You sit through the little intro splash screen, listen to the music slowly build up, and then suddenly the game's logo pops up and the music kicks into this awesome crescendo.   You're fucking pumped and the game hasn't even started yet.

9: Pokey Means Business! - If this isn't the most epic boss music then I don't know what is.  Starts out sounding like some 8-bit nes stuff and then kicks into HEAVY METAL.

8: Porkey's Pokies - Continuing Pokey's kickass boss music from Earthbound, Itoi said "Let there be more classic tunes" and it was done.  This song is short but it's just pure sex.

7: Legend of the Hero - This right here... this is THE Legend of Zelda song.  It kicks the ass out of every other Zelda song, NO CONTEST.  It's beautiful in it's subtlety and power.  It has made me cry manly tears of enjoyment.  Just wow.

6: Baldur's Gate 2 Main Theme - Trumping Baldur's Gate is the sequel's main theme.  I was pumped before even clicking New Game.  I can't be the only person who just sat and listened to the song fully before clicking new game.  I just can't.

5: Age of Wonders Air Song - One of the most underrated games of the decade, the AoW series had some kickass tunes that few games can touch in quality.  This one in particular brings a tear to my eye JUST LISTEN TO IT.

4: Dragon Quest VIII Overture - I love the DQ Overtures but DQ8, with it's fully orchestrated soundtrack, was made of pure win.

3: Believe - The Witcher Theme - Beautiful theme song for The Witcher, my favorite RPG of the last 3 or so years.  Absolutely LOVE the strings in this piece.  Seriously, listen to this piece.  Just listen MY GOD SO AMAZING JESUS CHRIST MORE QUALITY PC RPGS PLEASE.

2: Hitman 2 Theme - The title screen to this game was absolutely hilarious.  You've got this big, bald guy sporting two large pistols with super dramatic opera music in the game.  Epic.  Pure epic.  I couldn't help but laugh AND be pumped at the same time.

1: Fable Theme - Elfman did a bang up job on this theme song even though the rest of the game was pretty generic.

Honorable Mentions

Dammit, I can't just make a LIST.  Here's a list of other awesome game music.

Doom - If you played Doom as a little kid you cannot tell me you didn't bob your head and rock out to this great track.  Listen to this awesome fucking remix JESUS CHRIST ROCK

Duke Nukem 3D - Few people realized that Duke3D was a big parody against other first person shooter giants like Doom and Quake.  Ironically, it turned out to be the better shooter.

Quake - Remember how everything in the 90s was about RAWKING OWT!?  Yeah, Quake's theme was done by Nine Inch Nails and while I don't care for the band, I can't deny the theme song isn't awesome.

Always Bet On Duke - Man, even Megadeth made a Duke song.  I think you can only hear it on the N64 version but I'm not entirely sure.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Boss Theme  - Straight up breakcore inspired adrenaline rush.

I liked Contact (but was severely disappointed when it ended shortly after I was done mulling the intro over in my head (and before I could get more than halfway up any given outfit's skill tree(there was SO MUCH POTENTIAL for this game but they shoved most of the play time into collecting and that lame "get a girlfriend" sidequest thing))) but the sound never really wowed me that much -- at least, not to the point where I could say "best sound production value I've heard in any game." it had a lot of good-quality mellow pieces and the battle theme was pretty catchy (and okay the song for the giant superstore-island place was pretty boss) but I dunno as DS soundtracks go there would probably be some (Hotel Dusk, for one thing(rip hotel dusk ;=;)) that supersede it.

Try putting on some big warm quality headphones. Nintendo music doesn't sound all that good coming from their handheld speakers, but you can hear the quality of their hardware synthesizers really well with some Sennheisers (if you're THAT much of a geek.)

all videogame music sucks
hi dan

I know fuck all about music critique so I'm not going to go into technical details about my choices, so heh.

Also, I'm only going by games I've played so there are probably tons of great themes I don't know of.

10. (Jak II) Haven Forest theme - I'm a big fan of the Jak & Daxter series, Jak II being my favorite of the original three. I always thought this was a nice calm theme and the most memorable from the series.
9. (Donkey Kong Country 2) Stickerbrush Symphony - Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 had great music, but my 2 favorite themes are both from 2. It was between this and the Ice theme. This one has always been the most memorable theme from the entire Donkey Kong franchise though.
8. (Final Fantasy series) Prelude - The well known prelude is pretty great and changes slightly with each game. I didn't pick a specific one since they're all variations of the same theme.
7. (Super Mario Bros.) Main Theme - One of the most famous pieces of music in videogame history, and known even by most non-gamers, this piece is iconic and really needs no introduction.
6. (Chrono Trigger) Lavos Inner Core - One of, if not the greatest, final boss themes ever made. It's fast-paced and suits the battle perfectly.
5. (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time) Farewell Princess - Theme at the end of PoP: SoT. I always loved the Middle Eastern soundtrack of PoP: Sands of Time and Two Thrones.
4. (Silent Hill) Unknown - I just linked to a mishmash of Silent Hill 1 songs, since I can't really pick them apart very well. But the theme (or themes?) that always stood out to me was the nightmare theme, where the world turned into a hellish mechanical nightmare.
3. (Legend of Mana) Pain the Universe - One of the best boss themes ever made.
2. (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) Dracula's Castle - The Castlevania franchise has some great soundtracks, and it was hard to choose only one, but this one is one of my favorites.
1. (Terranigma) Ending theme - The greatest theme I've ever heard from a videogame. It's sad and beautiful (I know, cliche). This is one of only 2 RPG's I'd ever recommend playing (the other being Chrono Trigger).

10. Harvest Moon - Spring Theme
Not much to say.  I love Harvest Moon, and this is one of my favorite songs from it.  It can get a little annoying after a while, though.

9. the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Lost Woods (Saria's Song)
This song always makes me smile and dance when I hear it.

8. Myst - Sirrus' Theme Mechanical Age
This is my favorite theme from Myst, which is known for awesome ambient sound.

7. the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Theme
Seriously.  Anyone who cannot fall in love with this song after the first few bars is either deaf or a complete idiot.

6. Kingdom Hearts II - Passion ~ After the Battle ~
I like Utada Hikaru, and I like Kingdom Hearts.  Paired together for the second time = win.

5. Fable - Temple of Light
I know it is supposed to be from a "holy" place in the game, but it just sounds so eerie.

4. Age of Wonders - Clouds and Feuds
Age of Wonders has one of the best fantasy soundtracks I have ever heard and this is one of the best from it.  I can just visualize halflings and elves preparing for war.

3. Final Fantasy VI - Terra's Theme
VI was the first Final Fantasy I have ever played, and to this day, remains my favorite.  This theme in particular is my most memorable because of it's epic sound and beautiful flute melody.  I find myself remembering this song above all other FF themes.  Even the Prelude, Victory Fanfare, and Chocobo themes, three songs that are in every FF though changed.

2. Chrono Cross - On the Beach of Dreams ~Another World~
I am a big Chrono Trigger fan, and have been known to say that the CC soundtrack was a pile of shit with a few flowers growing out of it.  Who would have guessed that my number two song is from Chrono Cross.  This one has stuck with me since I first picked up CC.  There is just something about it that speaks to me of longing and desire.  I also must revise my opinion of CC's music.  I did some searching and have realized that it isn't the big pile of shit I thought it was.  Maybe my memory of the music was tarnished by thew game itself, or maybe I just needed a few extra years to learn to appreciate it, I don't know.  All I know is that this is not just one of my favorite video game songs, but one of my favorite songs, period.

1. Silent Hill 2 - Theme of Laura (Reprise)
I have never played the games, but I came across this song, and I was enchanted.  The piano and violin are two of the most beautiful instruments I have ever heard, and the arrangement is amazing.

hi, I'm only going to comment on a couple songs out of dozens of cool choices.

6. Kingdom Hearts II - Passion ~ After the Battle ~
I like Utada Hikaru, and I like Kingdom Hearts.  Paired together for the second time = win.

I always thought generic j-pop singers were a bad idea when making a soundtrack. Kingdom Hearts did nothing to change this. the hikaru stuff blew my head off when I was 12, but now that I'm old and cynical I can't help but hear it and think "hi im square-enix LET'S PANDER TO JAPFAG KIDS."

This song is short but it's just pure sex.

yes to both. I always liked the first's transition from standard 8-bit final boss theme to some solid guitarwork, and the way the second tied in to that (making chiptunes pokey's themegenre I guess.) That and I'm a chiptune fag.

9. Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time - Gerudo Valley

and I like spanish guitar quar(or howevermany (I just realized I have no idea what this genre is called but I like it anyway so there))tets too. this one kind of reminds me of the gypsy kings, who I listened to when I was like six, so maybe it's nostalgia. whatever the case, I haven't been able to get this one out of my head since you mentioned it.

2. (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) Dracula's Castle - The Castlevania franchise has some great soundtracks, and it was hard to choose only one, but this one is one of my favorites.

YES. when I was a little kid and booted up sotn for the first time, this track really cemented the atmosphere for me. I've always been particularly impressed by the tracks the nonlinear castlevania games choose for their starting areas (and I only use that qualifier because I haven't played many of the linear ones,) but this one is very effective even by those standards. Tower of Mist is another one of my favourites.

im sorry, but that song was anything but typical bubbly jpop. also, it sounds really really out of place on the album she included it on.

Pretty much this. I actually really enjoyed this song, and not the english version (they ruined it imo)

I agree.  Sanctuary wasn't even half as good as Passion.

it doesn't matter anyway because whatever it is square'll remix it to turn it into jpop before they put it in the opening cinematic
Not really?  The version in the opening cinematic is the true version, and this is kind of an extended remix.  It's not like with the first game where the true version doesn't show at all.  Just a remix in the opening, and an extended version in the end.

I gotta say, I really enjoyed both KH pop songs, but the english version of Passion is the best (the Japanese version had too many annoying added instruments that fucked up the harmony and made it a jumbled pile of crap that weeaboo get moist over because she's speaking in the "zomg" Japanese devil tongue.)
