The best RPG(s) you've ever played and why

well yeah when you put it that way i see what you mean. the engine updates are VERY welcomed. i still didn't feel much from the bulk of the gen3&4 pokemon, though, compared to gen2's.

Agreed, pretty much all of the Second Generation had wonderful designs. Although when you compare that two the best designs of two generations, it gets closer. But still, yeah- the fact that it takes two (and possibly will be another because GSC is so great) generations to come up with a similar number of good designs says a lot.

i don't really think the designs will reach the peak they had with g/s/c again, personally. i mean they've seemed to get progressively less interesting - gen3's designs weren't AWFUL, but a lot of gen4's designs are just downright uninspired. i hope they will though; gen2 gave me this awesome rush when i first played it that i'd love to feel again.

Agreed, totally- they'll never reach the same PEAK of EVERY pokemon in a generation being incredible- but some individual designs are great. Look at Drifblim.

Ocarina of Time is pretty overrated (though it's still a really good game, unlimke FF7 which is the most overrated piece of garbage ever)

imo Majora's Mask was better than Oot>

OoT was a surprisingly fun game (considering i pretty much despise the entire zelda series) but yeah it was pretty overrated.

Nowadays RPGs are lacking a certain spark that kept them alive. Sure, I love Final Fantasy XII to death, but you always feel as if there's something missing. Like point n'' click adventures, RPGs had their heyday in the 90's.

depends where you look. jrpgs might be losing their luster (you can only do so much with DARK LORD STEAL CRYSTAL'S) but western rpgs are still going pretty solid lately. oblivion was garbage but morrowind was great, the witcher is excellent, nwn2: mask of the betrayer seems pretty cool (though nwn2 itself was kindof boring compared to nwn1), knights of the old republic is excellent, and fable was mad cool. yeah, there was a ridiculous amount of REALLY GOOD rpgs in the '90s (baldur's gate, fallout, daggerfall, etc.) but they're by no means tapering off in quality. maybe they've plateaued lately but i expect them to rise again eventually.

Can't really decide if I liked OoT or Majora's Mask better. They were both great games, each with their own pros and cons. But to tell you the truth, my vote would go for Shades. It sure gave deeper meaning to color. The only downside is: Chapter 1 still isn't finished :'(

mhmm best rpg's would be growlancer all of them xD cuz there amazing and tales of syphonia also FF7 but everyone luvs that game =P that was a great game :D and for a game a cant stop playing that would be final fantasy tactics for ps1! :D beat it so many times its insane

Let's see, gameplay wise Yggdra Union and the character designs are cool *_*

As for RPG, there are so many D:

Final Fantasy Tactics (not sure if lion wars do justice D:)
Final Fantasy 7 and 6 (but 6 went downhill at some aspects too bad)

Legend of Legaia 1
Star Ocean The Second Story
Tales of Destiny (this is the tales I really enjoyed so far :))
Riviera The Promised Land (Not really outstanding but good :D)

And more XD

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

Probably the best atmosphere of any RPG I've ever played. Unlike many RPGs, it doesn't use its plot as a crutch and tends to leave many questions up to the interpretation of the player. And it's very cunning in giving the illusion of non-linearity in what's actually a quite linear game.

MY GOD YES

Also, there was such a great need for strategic thought and forethought for such a traditional RPG. And, well, it combines what must be my two favorite genres - survival horror and RPG - and meshes them into an orgy of awesomeness. God, yes. 8-)

Honorable mentions have to go to Final Fantasy IX (wow, never knew there were so many fans), Legend of Mana, and, uh, something else that just escaped my memory at the moment. Dx

I love every single rpg I've ever played. WHen I play them I get a different feeling with each, but it's always a good feeling. Either that or I'm just wasted while playing them. Note that I have a talent for picking out great games.

Final Fantasy IX. Hands-down, the best RPG, no the best game I've ever played. It's been my favorite since I first played it(it was actually like, my seventh actual game I ever played and my second RPG.) and I'm sure it always will be. There's just something about the game that sparkles and shines brightly for me.

I also love Dragon Quest VIII, for classic gameplay, lovable characters and superb monster designs.

Baten Kaitos:Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is also a favorite. It's fun battle system(which is not a card game, no matter how much you think it is.) and great story are always fun.

So many others, too... I don't think I'll list them all, because there so many which are my favorites and there's not enough space for it. :p

Oh and Tales of Symphonia. That one rocks too!

Final Fantasy IX.

Everybody's always hating on that one because the character models were chibi-ized, but I think that game has the strongest characters (especially the lead) of any Final Fantasy game, and honestly, stronger than many other games as well. Disliked Kuja, though D':

I completely agree. RPG protagonists, especially the probably most recognizable one(Cloud, of course.) are tend to be overly angsty and unsociable and Zidane is the opposite of all that(most of the time.). Cheery and witty characters are always more interesting in my book.

Im going to break from the norm and mention a game I just finished recently..that I think is one of the most enjoyable RPG experiences I have had in quite some time, despite it being rather short (not counting extras) and very Linear.. Eternal Sonata on 360. What a masterpiece of a game..to me anyways.

Just started playing Nocturne and it's already up there in best RPGs I've played. Great, great freakin' atmosphere, and the random battles are as random as they can be; never know when a random battle might result it getting a new party member, a new item, more money, or losing items and money due to trying to get a party member to join up who just ends up running off.

It's sorta like if Pokemon had incredible looking monsters, mysterious characters and a dystopia atmosphere.

Aside from that... Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy IX. I usually like tactical games though, so Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lotus, Final Fantasy Tactics, Namco x Capcom, Super Robot Taisen Alpha 3, Utawarerumono, Phantom Brave, Disgaea and Disgaea 2 would be up there. I loved the characters from FFTA, but the gameplay just didn't hold up, in my opinion.
