The best RPG(s) you've ever played and why

I like Star Ocean 3, I've spent more time playing it than any of the games I've already listed in this topic (excepting maybe fallout), but I do not think it is one of the best. The storyline was good and interesting, and then they just took it on a weird roller-coaster ride through existential philosophy land, and abandoned pretty much all the plot before that point (ie, what the fuck is up with Fayt's power? The Vendeeni are after him for it, and that's like the whole first half of the game, then suddenly it's never mentioned again). Etc etc. The game is a favorite of mine, but I think it's an INCREDIBLY far stretch to say it's one of the best.

And to add to the list... uh... I got nothing

God don't argue about this, this is the worst argument ever. It's commonly thought of as an RPG, and can easily be defined as one, yet if you DO define it as one, you also define an incredibly large amount of other games that are not usually thought of as RPGs as 'RPG'. What makes Zelda an RPG? You need items to proceed through the game, and these items make things easier, allow you to access new places.

Know what game also does this? Resident Evil. You get better weapons, zombies die quicker, you get a key to access a new room, you get a bomb to access a new area. As much an RPG as the Zelda games are.

So please oh please, keep your posts on-topic.

And to do what I just said...

Suikoden 2, I think you know why.

I just wish they would release games a bit more often, like they used to...

What do you mean? They release atleast 3 games a year not counting the numerous Japanese only rereleases, box-sets, anniversary editions, and "international remixes" or whatever they call their cash cow. It's not like the PS1 days were they developed a bunch of orignial releases like Musashi or Parasite Eve but they've been releasing a lot of sequels to previous franchises (Dawn of Mana) and handheld releases (the FF12 DS thing and FF Tactics on PSP).

Umm...Yeah it is?? Are you serious?O_o It's one of the biggest of all time...

Zelda is not an RPG. You don't level up, and all of the items in the game are found in static places. The key aspect of RPGs is dynamic character building, something Zelda lacks since everything is static, not dynamic.

Zelda, however, is an ARPG (action game with RPG elements). ARPGs are not RPGs, so they don't follow the same rules. Zelda is much closer to Resident Evil (like Andy6000 pointed out) or the Metroid games than to normal RPGs in that they fall under the 'Adventure' umbrella instead of the 'RPG' umbrella.

Regardless if its an Action/Story/Strategy based RPG its still a roll playing game in some respects therefore it is an RPG.

I would personally count it as an RPg, in that you are tachnically able to roleplay as the elf-hero, event though most would call him link.

The best rpgs i have played are FF9, Grandia(as a series, though I haven't access past 3 :() and the Champions series. I tried to play games like Baldurs Gate on the pc, but I think there are so many better games out there. I kinda like Drak alliance, but i didn't like the lack of avatar customization much. I have to say that Champions and Dark Alliance are horrible games without at least one other human player.

If you like Diablo-esque hack n slashes, then those games are actually pretty rad. Shoot, I liked both of those games BETTER than Diablo.

Vagrant Story is the most marvelously complex RPG I ever played.
This is my comment about it in another topic:

"Vagrant Story has the most original, detailed and strategic battle system ever. Just think about all that statistics for elements, types of enemies and types of weapons, and a timed based combo system that give it a bit of action package... The chain and defense abilities, magics and break arts... bonus and penalties for each part of your body, depending where enemies hit you... make your own weapons and armors, combining different types of materials... have I forgotten something?"

It also has a good story (nothing about that old rpg clich?s), incridible graphics (for the ps1 I mean) and good music. Lol.

In the first thread of this topic somebody mentioned Legend of Dragoon. In another topic I posted what I think about it:

"I think that the Legend of Dragoon Battle System is too simple and repetitive. No personal magics and habilities (only three or four elemntal attacks, when you are in dragoon form), limited inventory (even the use of magic casting itens is limited, cuz of this), the system make you just use the same additions (combos) again and again, and when you get used to performe them, it gets annoying. Even LoD fans would admit that it have a too much simplified system."

His story have nothing special and just the FMVs are really impressive. Final Fantasy VII is FAR more creative, inovative, intelligent and ORIGINAL. Why do so much people like LoD so much?? I dunno... It's not a bad game, but it suffered from the "I-have-to-be-like-final-fantasy" syndrome. And I am an open-minded rpg player. I'm not a final fantasy fanatic.

I don't think LoD was trying to be like FF at all. I think people think that because final fantasy came out first and FF7 made it super popular. Final Fantasy wished it could be like LoD, lol.

Like LoD, how? what called your attention in LoD and made you like it so much?
I'm curious:s LoD fans, tell me!!!!@_@ What's the secret? Something I didn't notice? :)

Megaman Legends hands down. Its a free-roam RPG and the first Megaman game in 3-D. Its really underrated, and generally a lot of Megaman fans do not like it because it departs to much from the other Megaman games(which is bogus, because most of these people like Megaman.EXE).

This game had great characters, gameplay, and depth. Almost everyone of the NPC's had their own personalities and traits. Its the only RPG I know of that makes it fun to talk to NPC's. I also loved the main characters, ESPECIALLY Teisel Bonne. The game also had a wonderful script.

I wouldn't really call Megaman Legends an RPG. It had some RPG features, but it was more like Zelda in terms of being an adventure game. But yes, it was generally underappreciated by MM fans although it did have a terrible ending with a huge gaping cliffhanger (but MML2 answered some questions).

Considering there was a 2 year gap between them and Sony pretty much stated they were capitalizing off of FF7s success...

So LoD is like Final Fantasy because...?

Because it's an RPG?

The setting is radically different, FF7 with a heavy steampunkish setting, LoD alot more fantasy oriented, and with a much different mythology behind it.

The characters are also not similar, except for I would definately argue, Shana(I think that was her name) and Aeris, except that Shana gets replaced mid-game. Dart and Cloud are incredibly different personality and design wise, except for the spiky blonde hair.

The battle systems are nothing alike aside from the fact that they're both ...RPG-like.

From what I recall (I haven't played LoD in like 5 years, so bear with me) the stories are literally nothing alike, aside I think the final bosses/ultimate villian's motives were similar. I remember thinking that but I can't remember why.

I really don't understand this "rip-off Final Fantasy" thing comes from. I definitely think Sony was trying to capitalize from FF7, by creating an RPG, which they realized could make a lot of money. The games are really not very similar at all.

I don't know about LoD being a ripoff of FF7, but LoD was really capitalizing off of FF7s success:

A: Both games used similar 3D models over pre-rendered backgrounds while pretty much 90% of other RPG's used in-game rendered maps.

B: Both games were heavy on CG cinematics.

C: A pivotal character dies about midway through both games.

D: The SCEI was originally going to ask Square to publish and localize it (because they knew if Square endorsed it, it would churn a higher profit) but they turned it down because "the story wasn't appealing enough." It was eventually localized and published by SCEI themselves.

There was an old website that drew over 3 dozen comparisons between the two games with quotes and stuff from the developers about how they were looking to make "the next FF7" but I haven't seen it in a while. I'll keep my eyes open for it during my random internet searches.

Best Game: Shin Megami Tensei Persona Playstation 1.

Reason: The story line is very modern for a RPG with involves summoning demons to cast spells. Plus to balace the gameplay theres a P Level. in order to use stronger personas you must level up. Plus the fact many of the stronger personas (about level 70+) Have some very overpowered spells.
But trust me. you won't level up that high more like in your upper 40's to 50's.

The fact also at key points in the game that certain choices you make affect the later part of the game. Unless you answer correctly at a certain event. (I'm talking about the Lost Forest) Your going to earn the bad ending. But even if you do get it right. If you mess up on a few choices you will not be able to...
Get certain items needed to create each party members ultimate persona.

@Marcus: Oh I wasn't debating that they were capitalizing off of FF7's success, because I think it's pretty clear that they were. Many people just say that LoD is a huge ripoff of FFVII, when I really don't think it is in terms of the actual games.

My top picks...

Xenogears. Hands down, I loved it to the end. the second disc wasn't as good as disc 1, sure, but disc 2 still had more story packed in it than every game i've played on ps2. I do not like Xenosaga anywhere NEAR as much.

Suikoden series, it never failed to impress and touch me.

Phantasy Star. it's so under-rated. And I'm not talking about the PSO series, I mean PS on the genesis. IV was one of the best games ever made in my opinion.

Lunar. Need I say more?

Shadow Hearts is shaping up to be a top series for me, if the other ones are as good as the first one.

Legend of Legaia. I looooooooooooooooooooooooove this game.
