Terraria

I die to stupid reasons all the time, especially falling. I would prefer not to start over upon dying, but I'm more interested in building than in fighting right now anyway. I'll wait till we start over to start building, though.

We can do this if you guys want, but it's just gonna result in me stashing all of my shit in a chest and never using it. My character doesn't have any HP anyway.

Also, can we start over sooner than Saturday, or do you want to make sure everyone has notice first?

Btw, guys, I've got an extra cloud in a bottle if anyone needs one. And if you happen to come across any heart crystals you can't use, I'd appreciate you throwing them my way.

I've got two extra Clouds in Bottles for the taking if anyone wants them. I've also got some less rare bars available as well. I'll work on a list of stuff that I can donate.

I think my friend and I have come up with a great idea for the next server; something to break up the monotony a bit.

Basically, the idea is fortress wars; there are two teams, each with a castle, and the objective is something akin to capture the flag. Once the game starts, PvP is enabled, and the two teams duke it out. IDK what the flags would be, but I guess you could play a sort of elimination game. The members of the winning team could get some sort of reward from the community pool.

On a side note: A goblin invasion just happened; I got my rocket boots.

that's an awesome idea! though i think we should coordinate it at a set time, esp since PvP can be toggled at any time.

i spawned a new world (it's not active on the server yet, just created) and made the starter area have just a super simple stone foundation. also added chests with some interesting building materials, collected off the current server's world and also other ones I've accumulated from others I've played. stacks of colored blocks and such. when the new server is started, please be sure to not be a jerk. Just take the blocks you NEED, when you NEED them, then put them back when done. It's hard to come by large quantities of these rare colored blocks and I put them there to avoid us having to deface everything to harvest them right away :)

There are also seeds & some designer items ... Again, take only what you NEED, and return the rest, so everyone can use them :)

I won't touch it again until it goes live. Hooray ~

The PVP should be each team has an hour to make a fortress or whatever and hide 5 colored blocks (as in you place them on the map in odd, accessible, places) and the first team to eliminate all 5 wins
we can also do the huge fortress in the middle and block off certain routes and that could be like the middle ground where all the sneaking and stuff takes place~

I'm thinking of buying this game, but if I do I'll want to play on my own server, so I have a question:
Will I be able to play lag-free if I host my own server? (My friends suffered quite a bit of lag on my Minecraft server so if that's the same with this game I probably won't buy it.)

If you have a good enough PC you'll be fine. My friend and I play on a server he hosts often and he rarely gets any lag at all.

if you are connecting to localhost (or a LAN PC's name) then it will run directly via LAN. you will not experience the same lag as someone connecting remotely, as they will require buffering etc.

If you are RUNNING it you should not experience any lag at all (depending on your machine specs).

When running a server others are remoting into you have to consider a bunch of things. The game takes only 1 core -- it is not multi-core capable (though Windows may reallocate other operations accordingly). So ideally you're looking for a CPU with an as-fast-as-possible clock speed, not necessarily one with lots of cores. 3.2GHz+ clock speeds. Though it depends on how many are on at once. Ours seems to stutter badly for remoters when 4-5+ are on at the same time.

It also depends on how dispersed the players are. The game only renders what players are near. If all players are in the same general location, it will not have to work as hard. If every player is off in their own quadrant of a Large map, expect lag to ensue.

It ALSO depends on how fast your (the server host) internet connection speed is, and, to a lesser extent (for these small servers), how fast the players' are (but their speed will only affect them, not others). If your internet provider is prone to throttling you, like ours is (bastards), your players should expect infrequent periods where it's laggier than usual.

Lastly, consider what you do on the server machine that may tie it up while you are hosting. If you want to dedicate the machine to keep the server running all the time, even when you don't want to play but are on the computer, you will have to be conservative about how many things you have open and how many resources you're hogging.

The game is, first and foremost, CPU intensive, so worrying over video cards etc. isn't really necessary.

Yeah I know I won't lag myself, it's more my friends that I'm worried about because my internet is just so damn slow.
Anyway, it looks fun enough, I might just download it for the singleplayer anyway.

~Edit

Oh and btw, do you guys remember the download size?
I 'd like to know how long it would take me to download it from steam :P

I have to ask, if it gets to Saturday. Is it a free for all on the chests? I assume that if people have not got it on them or in a piggy bank, that reminds me, someone had better pick them up, then they do not want or need it.

It's only like, 40MB or something like that. shouldn't take you more than a minute.

I'll have you know that's a 4 minute download for me, lol...

But yeah it's really small anyway

Yeah as far as I'm concerned, it may as well be a free-for-all on chests NOW. But some may have a problem with that, so waiting until friday night or saturday day seems like a good idea.

Piggy banks are player-specific. If you open a piggy bank you didnt place, it will still always show your version of the inventory.

So like I placed banks in my castle and in the NPC highrise. When you open it, you won't see MY stuff, though. You'll see whatever you stashed inside of any of the piggy banks you've ever had/encountered.

It is pointless to TAKE the piggy bank with you, because the game only registers it as a single item that references an array of items, not an item full of stuff. If you even grab every piggy bank on our world, and take them into the next, you will not have the contents of the bank.

You can buy banks from NPC Merchants for 1G/each so I really don't recommend wasting inventory slots on piggy banks.

Again, I recommend filling your inventory to the brim with cool building materials, decorating stuff, buckets full of water/lava, seeds & pots, or super duper useful things that you don't want to wait to get another of. I HUGELY recommend taking along a stack of empty chests.

I don't recommend wasting slots on easy-to-get stacks, either, like dirt, gel, wooden planks (but platforms are useful), raw stone (but bricks are useful), acorns, very basic furniture (like chairs, tables), or plants that can't be re-planted (like deathroots or glowweeds or dayblooms or w/e).

If you want to start busting down the dungeon (must have nightmare pickaxe or higher i think) to harvest the sweet, sweet colored bricks, that'd be a really good endeavor. I already dropped single-color 250-count stacks of each color type in the new world, and I have some additional on me besides, but it never hurts to have more! Especially since you can kill a whole stack of colored wall blocks just trying to put a back wall on a longish room.

I think the possible colored brick blocks are:
- Grey (from regular stone)
- Red (from clay)
- Pink (dungeon only)
- Blue (dungeon only)
- Green (dungeon only)
- Gold (from gold ore + stone) (also on floating islands & in jungle)
- Silver (from silver ore + stone) (also on floating islands & in jungle)
- Copper (from copper ore + stone) (also on floating islands & in jungle)
- Hellstone (from hellstone ore + stone) (also in hell houses) (note: these damage players not wearing obsidian skulls, but not enemies for some stupid reason)

Lastly, I think it was Cookie? who was trying to make a glowing mushroom farm ... But anyway before you decide on the new world to make a farm, please read up on the requirements.

Glowing mushrooms, for example, can only grow on mud at or below the rock layer. They do not grow above that.

Fireblossoms CAN grow in pots, but will only mature when submerged in lava.

Water sprouts CAN grow in pots, but only mature when submerged in water.

Etc.

A last worthwhile endeavor on the old world would possibly be to go to the sea and collect coral from the sea floor (on either side of the map). There's about 1 stack in the new world waiting for you, but they're colorful & kind of pretty so I'm assuming that they'll go pretty fast and they are pretty darn rare (I had to eat through 5 worlds to collect that stack).

When you get to the new world you'll notice a few gold chests. I never found one on our old server world so let me tell you right now: the only thing that's special about them is that they are yellow. So you may feel like snatching up all the gold chests for yourself but they will not give you anything special, nor extra storage. Everyone is allowed to have 1 gold chest in their house at the beginning, then you can do w/e you want with them after everyone's got one.

IDK why but people seem to love the sparkly yellow chests
(I do too >_>)
