Yeah as far as I'm concerned, it may as well be a free-for-all on chests NOW. But some may have a problem with that, so waiting until friday night or saturday day seems like a good idea.
Piggy banks are player-specific. If you open a piggy bank you didnt place, it will still always show your version of the inventory.
So like I placed banks in my castle and in the NPC highrise. When you open it, you won't see MY stuff, though. You'll see whatever you stashed inside of any of the piggy banks you've ever had/encountered.
It is pointless to TAKE the piggy bank with you, because the game only registers it as a single item that references an array of items, not an item full of stuff. If you even grab every piggy bank on our world, and take them into the next, you will not have the contents of the bank.
You can buy banks from NPC Merchants for 1G/each so I really don't recommend wasting inventory slots on piggy banks.
Again, I recommend filling your inventory to the brim with cool building materials, decorating stuff, buckets full of water/lava, seeds & pots, or super duper useful things that you don't want to wait to get another of. I HUGELY recommend taking along a stack of empty chests.
I don't recommend wasting slots on easy-to-get stacks, either, like dirt, gel, wooden planks (but platforms are useful), raw stone (but bricks are useful), acorns, very basic furniture (like chairs, tables), or plants that can't be re-planted (like deathroots or glowweeds or dayblooms or w/e).
If you want to start busting down the dungeon (must have nightmare pickaxe or higher i think) to harvest the sweet, sweet colored bricks, that'd be a really good endeavor. I already dropped single-color 250-count stacks of each color type in the new world, and I have some additional on me besides, but it never hurts to have more! Especially since you can kill a whole stack of colored wall blocks just trying to put a back wall on a longish room.
I think the possible colored brick blocks are:
- Grey (from regular stone)
- Red (from clay)
- Pink (dungeon only)
- Blue (dungeon only)
- Green (dungeon only)
- Gold (from gold ore + stone) (also on floating islands & in jungle)
- Silver (from silver ore + stone) (also on floating islands & in jungle)
- Copper (from copper ore + stone) (also on floating islands & in jungle)
- Hellstone (from hellstone ore + stone) (also in hell houses) (note: these damage players not wearing obsidian skulls, but not enemies for some stupid reason)
Lastly, I think it was Cookie? who was trying to make a glowing mushroom farm ... But anyway before you decide on the new world to make a farm, please read up on the requirements.
Glowing mushrooms, for example, can only grow on mud at or below the rock layer. They do not grow above that.
Fireblossoms CAN grow in pots, but will only mature when submerged in lava.
Water sprouts CAN grow in pots, but only mature when submerged in water.
Etc.
A last worthwhile endeavor on the old world would possibly be to go to the sea and collect coral from the sea floor (on either side of the map). There's about 1 stack in the new world waiting for you, but they're colorful & kind of pretty so I'm assuming that they'll go pretty fast and they are pretty darn rare (I had to eat through 5 worlds to collect that stack).
When you get to the new world you'll notice a few gold chests. I never found one on our old server world so let me tell you right now: the only thing that's special about them is that they are yellow. So you may feel like snatching up all the gold chests for yourself but they will not give you anything special, nor extra storage. Everyone is allowed to have 1 gold chest in their house at the beginning, then you can do w/e you want with them after everyone's got one.
IDK why but people seem to love the sparkly yellow chests
(I do too >_>)
