I hate the "you have tannish skin so you must be A MEXICAN" stereotype. The younger cashiers here in the continental US are so awful, some of them just start prattling along at me in Central American Spanish for no reason at all, and some of the older cashiers are equally as bad in that they are pretty cold towards you until they card you because you're buying fine whisky and are suddenly very friendly: "... oh, hello sir! I didn't realize you were from Hawaii, not Mexico! I'm sorry! Fancy that, why would you want to bother with this cold weather?"
Though my favorite experience was when some crazy white Don Quixote lawyer came up to me with a little fat Sancho following him and he just started shootin' the shit at me in Spanish, to which I had to tell him, "My good sir, I am deeply offended by your archaic stereotyping."
i think it's less that i hate that people automatically assume that i'm mexican here and more that i hate that there are so many mexicans here that people assume it automatically
At least in Hawaii, the only people you got disdainful looks from is tourists wondering what A Local is doing eating in Their Fancy Restaurant.
Also, I have nothing but respect for rednecks. The ones who don't waste their lives away on cheap drugs or Bad Activities (which is true about anyone anyway) are secretly good at higher sciences in ways most people probably don't realize. I'm proud that I'm related to some.
