Sonic the Hedgehog 4

So I come bearing news that I've apparently been behind on and read about in Sega's official "Project Needlemouse" blog:

First off, contrary to what I've been thinking, according to Sega:

let’s go ahead and dispel away a little rumor that we’ve noticed in the comments:

Project Needlemouse is not an HD version of Sonic 1. These may be old badniks, but when we said all-new adventure, we meant it.

Interesting. Now what this means for me is that Sega REALLY better not dissapoint because they are actually making me anticipate this even more. Not an HD remake of Sonic 1? Intriguing to say the least.

They've also released A few more concept images:

The Sunflower has long been a defining feature of Sonic’s beginnings ever since it first appeared in the original Sonic The Hedgehog. Along with the Badniks, it returns in the first zone of Project Needlemouse – and, yes, it actually spins.

If there’s one thing we know about Palm Trees, it’s that they tend to hide hidden boxes with power-ups like invincibility. We do not question how exactly such a box managed to find its way to the top of a palm tree, but we do know that finding such boxes hidden in Palm Trees is still pretty awesome. So, consider it official – these guys are coming back, too.

While we know that these two pieces of concept art may literally only be a sunflower and a palm tree, and aren’t exactly the most action-packed pictures you’ve seen this year, they express a spirit of the game that we feel is even more important. From Badniks to Zones, there are some things that mean a lot simply because they exist within a game.

Of course, basing concept art off of only a single piece is kind of difficult, right? We thought so too – so today we’re releasing our second piece of concept art in celebration! Last time we revealed a Badnik that was originally in Sonic 2; this time, we’re going back even further – say hello to an old enemy you should recognize from the original Green Hill Zone! (Click to see the full size image.)

The last update I have to report is that Sega has decided to reveal Project needlemouse tonight at 3am (midnight for west-coasters such as myself)

What is Project Needlemouse? Well, you’ll soon know. We will be unveiling Project Needlemouse at midnight (US Pacific time) TONIGHT on GameSpot!

That’s all we can say for now, but you’ll know more in just a few hours! So put on a pot of coffee, and stay up late for all the Needlemouse-y goodness.

Anyways, I'm very skeptical, but really interested about this. Feel free to share your thoughts, etc.

One word: Awesome.
Edit: Shame they left out Tails and my favorite...Knuckles. I think it's pretty likely they may be actually in Episode 1 or even more likely in Episode 2.

Well, Tails and Knuckles weren't even on that list, were they? So maybe they'll be playable as unlockables or something. One thing would be cool, is to have levels specifically tailored for them, as opposed to the entire game being the same. Yes, I realize that a few levels in Sonic 3 & Knuckles had some pathing specifically for Knuckles.. but they were few and far between. With Project Needlemouse, they have a chance to make levels just for those two.

Man I'd poop my pants if there were also optional levels specifically tailored for flying or climbing through for T/K. But somehow I foresee this as being mostly a glam'd up remake of STH1. Which I still don't have a problem with. If they're going to do something they need to do it really well. Not tack on a lot of other gameplay facets that are half-assed. Like most of the other Sonic games in recent history.

I especially hope they go back to little/no plot. I'm tired of all these trippy furry fantasies. What's wrong with just stopping an evil scientist from hurting animals. I don't need more context into running through an area other than "you're chasing someone". Really, that's all the context I need!

Hey, it looks like it's going back to its roots. Which is AWESOME! I loved the sonic games when I was a kid. I have the Sonic Mega Collection, which is very fun! :) I also wish Tails and Knuckles were in it... O.o

Man, I'm looking forward to this now, but I stand by what I said earlier; if Sega messes this up, then I'll abandon the series completely. I like what they're doing so far, I like the simple-ness of what they've posted, and I really hope they keep it that way. I completely agree with Vennie: keep the story simple as hell.

Although I still would like to see Tails and Knuckles as downloadable characters sort of like Protoman for Megaman 9. Now THAT would rock my socks.

I love how this is downloadable stuff, but it makes me feel like it should be released as a giant downloadable thing and not episodes. But hey, it's too early to really say much, who knows? Maybe this will finally put Sonic back into his glory days, or (what I'm fearing) this will just be another mediocre Sonic title. Since it is 2-D sort of like Sonic Rush, I want to think the former.

I think I said this in an earlier post, but the only reason why Mario works in 3D is because it's not super fast like Sonic. Sonic does not (or at least, the way Sega's been doing it) work in 3D. He just doesn't. I can't think of a way to make him work well in 3D, and obviously Sega can't either. Sonic was almost perfect in that first game on the Dreamcast. I loved that one, and I always wanted to go to Toys r Us to play the game they had set up.

Sonic in 2D, or even 2.5D as this might be, will be good. I don't think they can screw this up.. here's hoping.

Awesome Bro

They managed to get Sonic to work in 3D in Sonic Unleashed, but only the day levels, although it switched to 2.5D anyways, as well as the standard behind view, but you were going to fast and needed to react so quickly, it just made it more epic with every level you played...

... Then they added the night levels, some of the most tedious levels on any game I've played, with TERRIBLE checkpoint locations.

I'll probably end up getting this, although I hope they eventually release all these "episodes" on a disc or something, since I'm not really a fan of digital distribution, aka. PSN/XBLA

Awesome Bro

I saw that footage a while back but the idea of posting it here completely crossed my mind...

My complaints so far would be that the running and spinning animations are nowhere near as fast as they should be.
