sotfstory.png

There is a time long forgotten in the lore of today’s storytellers. A time when darkness reigned and the blackest of magics were used freely with no regard for the continents. A time when hope was man's greatest weakness and pain, and when blood stained the hands of all men. There was a sorcerer behind it, one who will always be without name, for name is the greatest summon. He commanded an army of terrible creatures; some with disfigurements, others without resemblance of humanity. That was until a hero arrived, one who shone so brilliantly that terror was struck into the heart of the sorcerer. In the final confrontation, the hero was losing. Gasping and nearing death, his body triggered the magic with made him so special. It was called the Vathos, and it was pure light which could only exist in the presence of pure darkness. Neither light nor darkness could ever win this battle, for what is one without the other? The hero could not destroy the sorcerer, so he locked the sorcerer's powers into a box that could only be opened with Vathos. But the sorcerer still exists, waiting and lurking for another with the gift to come again and release him.

Liam was born and raised in the small mountain town of Dell, learning how to wield an axe and providing for his mother and younger sister. On the day of his best friend’s wedding, he and Raphael and distracted by what seems to be his sister out in the woods. When they return the village, they are distraught to see that a stonespell has been cast over it, turning all of the villagers to stone. Liam, who has always longed for an adventure, believes that there was a reason that they were distracted when the spell was cast. He enthusiastically sets out to reverse the spell and Raphael follows along, torn between his desire to keep watch over the stone figure of his fiancé and his need to free her from this spell.

The mage at the bottom of the mountain tells them that there is only one sorcerer strong enough to cast a stonespell over the whole village. He tells Liam that in order to free his town, he needs to open the sacred chest containing pure light which will then destroy the sorcerer and free the town of Dell.

The original story of the Vathos being forgotten in history, Liam and Raphael leave on a quest to save their village. Soon after they leave the mage’s house, a shadowy figure visits him and tells him that he has done well, and everything is now in motion, and his lord shall be free again…

Something isn’t quite right. Is Liam really the hero who is intended to defeat the sorcerer? Or is he just a helpless pawn in a much larger scheme?

Now, six years later, Natalie is still a loyal member of his crew.

softlocations.png

Ritai: this is the name given to the three continents that lie in the middle of what is known as the “Endless Ocean”. Ritai is ruled by a High King, Joseph Betang, though the three continents have their own princes, who happen to be his sons.

Mercia: the main kingdom of the Ritai, and run by Ludra Betang, Mercia is where most of the politicians and rich men live. Its capital city, Kalva, is largest trading port in Ritai, but it is also the city with the largest slums and most waifs. The High King of Ritai lives here, surrounded by nobles and dignitaries. Mercia has the largest army out of the three continents, and it also has a large group of Leaguesmen, men who legally fly sky ships to trade material and to make a profit.

Cerir: this is the second largest of the continents, and its prince is Angeld Bentang, a more peaceful man than his brother. Though Cerir is vast, most of the citizens live in the north. It is a wild place, full of monsters and plainsmen.

Arcia: the smallest of the continents and also the most mysterious, Arcia is home to magical races such as the elves, and most of its numerous forests are bathed in mist. The prince of Arcia is Perwar Betang, the smartest but least ambitious of his family.

EXTRA INFO:

The story may seem a little cliché, but trust me, it’s nothing like it seems. What I have given here basically outlines the first hour of the game, but the storyline changes throughout the arcs (I’m planning for four arcs, with different chapters within them), and it isn’t all ‘chosen hero with light power must defeat darkness’ like it seems. I’m trying to focus a lot on the characters and their development, and I hope they play a large part in the appeal of the game. I want living, breathing, characters, and I’m working towards achieving that.

I must say this looks very interesting. Though the "hero goes into forest and returns to find tragedy awaiting at the village" thing is a bit overused, I still like the general direction. Your mapping is a little bit under par here but that doesn't bother me that much.

I'll be watching this.

EDIT: Also, can I assume you're a fan of Master of the Wind? Your whole story arc system and userbars resemble that a good bit.

Thanks :)

While I dislike using something overrused, I find one of the advantages of something happening to the player's town/family/love is a good way to start them on a quest without having a magic crystal or dragon telling them they're the chosen one or something like that.

As for the mapping, I was pretty confident about the second screenshot, but I understand that my cave is kind of empty (I'm trying to find a balance between empty and cluttered but it isn't going so well) and the fortress screenshot wasn't so good. The fortress is for the intro, and it's seen for about five seconds, but most of what I have so far takes place in Dell and I didn't want to post too many screenshots of the same place.

About Master of the Wind, I've played a bit through the first arc last week when I got around to downloading, but never really had time to play more. It's on my list, though. I found that the story arcs were a good way of seperating Goal A, Goal B, Goal C, and Goal D, which is why I'm using them, and the chapters are different because they're different chapters on the journey to Goal A or whatnot. I'm still unsure if I actually will end up using chapters, and if so, how I'm going to release the game (eg. in chapters? arcs? first chapter of an arc and then rest of it later?)

The reason the userbar resembles the MotW userbar is mostly because I was using it for reference- like, the opacity of the lines, the lightness at the top, since I had never made one before.

Thanks for your interest ^__^

It doesn't look like a "chosen hero with light power must defeat darkness" at all. It looks more like "some naive fool is being lead into releasing the ancient evil". I hope this isn't a plot twist that's supposed to surprise the player. If that's not the case however, then great.

Characters seem interesting enough as does the story, although I do get the feeling you let us know to much.

It's not exactly meant to surprise the player. However, within the first two seconds of the introductory cutscene, it is mentioned that someone with the Vathos has been selected by the ancient evil to release him, since the Vathos is needed to unlock the chest, which could lead the player to believe that a main protagnist does have the Vathos needed to defeat the sorcerer (eg. light versus dark) despite the fact that Liam seems to be naively lead into a trap, but I'll let you draw your own conclusions...

Hmm, about the knowing too much, I wasn't sure whether to cut off the story at "they set off on a quest" or let it run as long as I did, so I figured I might as well just end after the story truly begins, but I think it's safe to say I'm not going to be posting any more story-related details about the next arc or plots after what I've already posted so as not to ruin anymore potential plot twists.

:) thanks for the comments.

I see. I wasn't sure you realized that most players will notice that the action needed to release the sorcerer and the task Liam is asked to do matches way to well. Now that I know you toke that into account when promising things aren't what they seem to be, I do believe you have a great idea going.

Fen

Yeah, I expected players to notice that if they read the thread thoroughly.
If they just skimmed over it, then it's a surprise for them when they realize "hey, wait a moment, doesn't that release the sorcerer" :)
The fact that there's someone with a light power and an evil sorcerer was what compelled me to write that line, even though it was obvious to anyone paying attention that Liam was misguided.

Thanks, though ^^ I hope to have the demo up before I leave for Germany on wednsday.

Thanks c:
That's a good idea that you have about the windowskin xD I'll look into it sometime :)

Also:
I fixed the battle system, so the health and mana bars are now showing. It's not as bland as it looks in the screenshot.

Posted up the demo link!
Please note that the current windowskin is just a filler :)
You can also press spacebar to skip the intro before the titlescreen.

or theres no Download Link there o.O

Played the demo a bit.

The beginning of the village is rather boring. It's just a lot of fetch quests. This would have been perfectly ok if the NPCs were interesting and the game got a good amount of characterization going while doing the fetch quests, but this isn't really the case. Worse, since it's the village getting petrified which starts motivates the quest, it helps if the player actually cares about the village. As it is however, my reacting of the village getting petrified was relief over being done with it.

The storytelling improves considerable once the petrification started. You did a great job of conveying the feeling that something is wrong. The characters also made some logical conclusions when observing some weirdness.

The dungeon is way to dark. I can't see the stairs down, I had to guess where they are. When I came upon the boulder pushing puzzle, I could see the boulders, but not the obstacles. By luck I managed to get the left puzzle right the very first try.

Then I entered the magical bridge despite it being only half complete. As expected, Liam proceeded until he got to an incomplete section. To my surprise I could still continue north. Then at the next map I found out I could walk trough walls. I'm going to assume the game gave my character a Trough ability, but forgot to remove it. As it is now, I can go trough anything.

Edit: I can't load the save file. I get the three usual options, but I can't see which one is highlighted. So far I've managed to start a new game and quit the game, but never load the save file. Come to think of it, the enemy select cursor also looks like a gray square.

Sorry for a bit of a late reply, I'm away.
The point of the fetch quests was to make the character care about the village... but I guess I didn't pull it off. When I get back and update a modified demo, I'll work on that.

As for the through thing... I knew about that bug and I tried a bunch of stuff to fix it but it just didn't work. I wanted to get a demo up for feedback before I went away so I uploaded it anyways.

I'm coming back from vacation in about two days. When I get home, I'll fix up the bugs and make some changes before re-uploading a fixed first demo version. After that, I'll begin work on the first arc of the story, which will all be in the next release, so it will be awhile before the next substantial release.

More recent screenshots have been added to the thread.
+ I've fixed the enemy select cursor so now you can see what you're doing.
+ Bakery now looks like a bakery
+ The demo is now a complete version of the prologue (including ending cutscene)
+ Through bug on the cave puzzle has been fixed.
+ More items hidden in random locations (drawers, holes) have been added.
+ Title screen is now nicer looking and more meaningful.

I'm just fixing up the last cutscene as well as some BGM issues, but hopefully the new demo will be up before next sunday.
