I just got it a couple hours ago. Had my bUdDeH over for a couple Vs. matches to get the hang of things, and then we went straight into the Subspace Emissary. My impressions are as follows:
Man, Lucas is really good. Like, really good. I expected him to be somewhat of a soft-hitter angled towards more strategic players, but he's just a little wimp filled with pure power. PK Freeze has a bit of a shorter range and a smaller blast than I'd like it to, and PK Thunder is as hard to master as ever. PSI Magnet... I can see some potential issues with only being able to extend the field in one direction, but I hardly ever use it so I'm fine with that for now. PK Fire is really impressive, though. A single blast with nice power, good knockback, and a respectable range.
His normal attacks are nice, too, particularly those charged with PSI. His bat (stick) isn't as powerful as Ness', but his aerial moves are great. His ground-based upward smash (PK LOVE) is a thing of legend, although it takes a long time to charge and recover from. I consider it a Falcon Punch directed upwards.
Let me reinstate: PK LOVE!
: D
PK Starstorm isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Even in my initial one-on-one fights, I managed to peg my friend a couple times, and the projectiles are strong enough to be significant. With the number of times a Smash Ball popped up, I shouldn't expect these moves to be all-powerful, anyway.
Dedede certainly lives up to his professed "big lug" persona. He's slow, but it's hilarious to watch how he flies. The Kirby jump capability certainly sets him aside from Bowser in that area. His attacks are strong, and some of them are very fast -- he managed to beat me to the punch several times as Lucas. His final smash is adorable and a devil to avoid if you're on a flattish stage and get caught up in a barrage of his subjects. It's hard to avoid even on huge stages such as New Pork City, purely because it's impossible to predict where they'll spawn next.
Meta Knight is small, fast, and tough to hit. His attacks generally have wide ranges, and if you get caught in one of them a combo is nearly inevitable. I preferred to fight this dude from a distance, since he can strike quickly and to great effect. I didn't get to see his final smash in action, since I carelessly neglected to let my friend know it was an exclusively close-range deal.
Lessee, what else...?
Cap'n Olimar seems confusing to use. Once my friend was done with the novelty of being able to grab ledges from a great distance with many Pikmin, Cap was mostly dead.
New Pork City as a stage is wonderful. It's big, it's fun, and the Red Chimera is hands-down my favourite character ever. I got bitten once just to see his jawspan. The use of the "Chimera sees you!" sound effect when it spawns nearly sent me into a ten-day fanboy orgasm.
Plus, the music is catchy.
Oh, the Pokemon Trainer. From what I've seen, he's an effective and well-balanced character, made all the more versatile by the Switch move. It's like having Mario, Diddy Kong, and Bowser in one character. His final smash is intense; I though I'd be able to dodge it (it being a line, and the current stage being Pictochat with platforms drawn in,) but it sacked me before I had the opportunity.
Subspace Emissary is fun. Not much else to say on the matter besides that. Spent some time collecting stickers, although before we realized this we assumed we were just doing a public service by disposing of litter.
In sort, it's a good game so far. There go my grades.
