Sandfall - Tech Demo!!

I don't see how eight-directional movement would really benefit the game at all, especially when it would just cause problems in the battle system.

Edit:

I'm working on a new design for Serren that more accurately reflects the new direction I am taking the project. This new version is also original and not a frankensprite with original hair.

What do we think?

I kinda like the original design of Serren... and I agree with Powerdude... it does look like a younger version of the character.... maybe you shoud use it for flashbacks...
I like this project, the story and the graphics.... the only thing I dislike.... are the eyes of your sprites... they look like dead.... dolls eyes...
............If that made any sense

This is looking good, Despain. Although there are a few things in your screenshots I'm not quite feeling. The first being the wall in the first screenshot, I stared at it for about 30 seconds but I just couldn't make sense of It. I'm also of a fan of how the southern facing cliff tiles have a darker outline than the rest of the cliff, I would think that It would look better If this look were consistent on all the cliff tiles. I'm also not big on how your shadows are completely opaque, as I feel the look distracts from the soft tone in the rest of the maps. But the latter two issues are probably just your personal preference.

Anyway keep up the good work.

You said that the NPCs play a big role in the game, however, I remember in the old Sandfall, you couldn't talk to some of them because they were "too busy". Are you still following this idea or changed your mind?

we're still going to have the busy NO TIME TO TALK GOTTA WALK ON THIS MOVE ROUTE LIKE I GOT SOMEWHERE IMPORTANT TO GO NPCs, but the ones who said stuff like "Water is plentiful here, but expensive. In the past, dehydration was common." in the first demo will say more detailed and unique stuff. less GENERIC NPCs and more with attitude and emotion. atmosphere is a big thing here :3

ps incredible new title

Yeah I know about that, you're not the first to comment on those. Like I said it's a test map. That tile simply hasn't been changed yet.

I'm also not big on how your shadows are completely opaque, as I feel the look distracts from the soft tone in the rest of the maps.

The effect is intentional. I really like the way in which the hard shadows make objects really stand out from the terrain. It contributes to the comic-book style that we're going for.

Anyway...updated Serren. This displays all the ways in which he'll be seen in the game (the majority of the game will be played with number two or three). I'd like solid feedback on his appearance before going any further than designs.

The first one looks just plain. The second one is more looks like a rogue or some bandit. I love the third and the fifth. They just suits the game's settings with their cape, you know, looks like a west wild cowboys.

Damn Des, as always you really have outdone yourself. I really need to check this out and download ASAP. Glad to see this hasn't fallen into the sea of Holy-crap-this-game-sucks-balls RMXP games.

Wow, I remember this on .net, I think... scary, but beautiful to see that this 'excuciatingly' beautiful game has gone by the wayside, croaked, kicked the bucket, bit the big one, ate more than it could chew, you get the idea.

Your main character sprites look beautiful.  Hell, all the sprites in your screenshots look gorgeous.  You make my sprites look... er... bad.

The story is one that I'm dying to uncover and the feel of your screens is making me piss in my pants with excitement.  This has definitely become one of my idols.

I want to see more!  Can't wait to explore your ABS either! ^^

By means of suggestion, I think that if you are going to keep the opaque shadows, they should be exaggerated a bit more.  Since you're trying to make it look like a comic book making the shadows a bit longer or wider might make the tiles look a bit better.  Erm, or maybe I'm just rambling...hmm.  I'm just really not digging the opaqueness.  I understand the effect you're trying to get across...but something needs to be done to make them look...UGH I don't know different.  O_o  Sorry disregard anything I said goodbye.

x3 good luck with sandfall!  I honestly want to see a full-length demo.

I have couple more questions to shoot at ya, Des.

Question number one: Will there be actual 'sandfalls'?

Question numero uno: Will there be train robberies?

Seriously, though, Serren's fourth sprite looks like he's just about ready to steal from a locomotive.
