RuneScape gets a graphical update :o

So yeah, everyone hates RuneScape. I play it to waste time, generally.

The main argument against it is the lame graphics.

But they posted a news update today saying how they're improving the graphics! They've been working on it for over a year. Not only improved graphics, but the game will also be playable in full-screen mode, for a wide number of resolutions (including widescreen).

It doesn't look much from first glance, but then you realise... Look at the path, instead of an ugly one-colour straight-edged path with obvious tiling, they have actual textures on the floors, smoothed off and blended into the grass and all that jazz.

The objects actually look 3D (or 3D-er, being that the game is already 3D).

That's everyone think of this? To me I reckon it's great.

Please don't use this topic to just bash RuneScape... everyone knows 99% of the people in the world hate it. (Though 1 million people are paying for it, £3.20+ a month).

It still looks shit. Probably worse now as they're no longer 'that low-fi MMORPG' and stuck between the light clients and proper ones.

I will be highly surprised if they aren't found to have stolen some of these new textures though.

A change from the obvious tiling is nice, but I doubt it'll attract people.  If anything, it may create more lag.

I used to watch greasy 12 year olds play that back when I worked at Cybernetrix internet cafe. It looks quite interesting but not enough for me to give it a go. I got bored with Guild Wars & WoW so i doubt this one will make me come back.

Huge upgrade, though.

i've never been against the graphics (i'm a sucker for mid- to late-'90s 3D). my main argument against it is that it just SUCKS.

It looks...pretty much exactly the same. Improvement is extremely slight.

I'm no UBER MODELLER MAN MAN but for working on it over an entire year that's a really pathetic result.

I looked at the first picture and thought it was the one with updated graphics.
Last I played or even seen runescape it was 2d.

RuneScape's never ever been 2D :p

RuneScape 1 (now classic) is 3D, with some 2D sprites.
RuneScape 2 is the first screenie.
RuneScape "3" (though still actually 2) is the big one.

Granted, it does look better, but it's still not enough to make it worth playing ever again.

I realize that Runescape does have craploads of idiotic twelve year olds in the midst of it's userbase, but the gameplay isn't really that bad.  I mean, if you don't like Runescape's battles, then you should HATE Rpg Maker.  Besides, this is a bandwagon thing anyways.
