A little off topic, but what the hell...
College: an institution of higher learning, usually providing a general or liberal arts education rather than a professional education.
University: College+. They'll do everything a college does and then some, such as technical and professional training. And cost a bit more.
But generally the word college, unless your all haughty, can be substituted for University. Few people I've ever met, when asked where they went to college ever said "I didn't, I went to a University, ho-ho" except one really stuffy guy from Cambridge who just looked down and sneered at everyone.
If you go to a University, people will still use the words college on you, but those who do go to a University are less likely to. If someone of a higher class is likely to inquire about your education, they may ask what University you were schooled in, and unless your againstic you'll just name your college. If your againstic then you'll pull the same line that Cambridge guy did only reverse the facilities.
Oh, and so this isn't completely off topic, I forgot to mention and totally forgot until this question was asked, I had a year and a half at a trade school - as well as a college. My mistake.
