Post What's on Your Mind

I'm not so worried about the art right now ( although I'm sure that's going to be a major issue with me in the future because I'm totally artistically challenged). I'm more having difficulties coming up with effects for cards. I was using other cards' (Yu-Gi-Oh!) abilities for "inspiration" but I felt like I was blatantly copying some of their cards lol

Perhaps you should use it for actual inspiration and not "inspiration"? :P

Look at the mechanics you like, and put a new spin on them. With all the TCGs out, big and small, pretty much every TCG idea has been done before, just perhaps not in specific configurations. For instance, an idea I had on a Deck Building game I was making. It used the Adventure Time Munchkin Ally system as inspiration. When you would explore the monster deck, you could come across one of the 7 deadly sins who could become your active 'ally'. Now these allies have different effects, such as the Magpie (Greed) could steal an opponent's card from their hand. But the Magpie could only activate say 3 times and then it'd be gone. But it also had a passive effect so it was a balance of when to activate it.

ha. what I was doing was taking their cards' abilities and changing them so that their costs relate to my card game or changing the effect a little so that it's cost and balancing work with the rules of my game. is that cheating?

no, none of that. I grew up playing very competitive yugioh. It's my favorite card game. So while I was designing the card game I'm working on now -- I wanted to have everything I loved about yugioh back when I was deep in it and try to exclude all of the stuff that I started to hate about it.

What I meant by changing them slightly is...

[Yugioh] Snatch Steal - Equip only to a monster your opponent controls. Take control of the equipped monster. During each of your opponent's Standby Phases: They gain 1000 Life Points.

[Tri-Line Force] Abduction - You can only activate this card while you control no more than 1 creature on the battlefield. Equip only to one of your opponents creatures; That creature is now under your control. As long as this card is equipped to that creature your opponent draws 2 cards during their draw phase instead of 1.

My game doesn't have any stars or ranks or any of that stuff. There's actually no "My battlefield vs. Your battlefield." The game is played on one single shared board.

Started to try Black Desert Online. It hates my Gaming Laptop. Though interestingly enough, I think FF14 has gotten under my skin -- even though I still find it utterly boring. Playing WoW / GW2 now doesn't feel so good. It's weird.

I don't recall battlefields having a big effect in YuGiOh?
To be honest that's a very simple card effect; given the changes you've made I'd say that was a straight up inspired card rather than 'inspired'. :p Hell, Hearthstone has a ton of Steal cards in Priest! I think your effect description is too verbose though. That will be fun if you have more complex effects, trying to fit in on a card at a readable size. :)

Perhaps this is more concise...

'Equip to an opponent's creature; equipped creature is under your control. Whilst this card is in play, your opponent draws a total of 2 cards in their Draw phase. This card can only be activated if you control less than 2 creatures.'

You may want to look into introducing named card effects like MTG has, to help reduce words even more. So you could have something like...

'EQUIPPED: Opponent draws 2 Cards total in their Draw Phase.
Equip to an opponent's creature; that creature is under your control. This card can only activate if you control less than 2 monsters.'

You may want to change the effect to 'draw an additional card' instead in case of duplicate / similar cards effects. Otherwise they'll get to use the card without the drawback. Also a small idea... perhaps have it so the card can be used on friendly monsters too; that way a player can send a weak / unable-to-attack monster to their foe, to increase their own draw power.

... I would totally make a digital TCG. But that type of AI is beyond my reach. Unless I sacrifice all card complexity and synergy. Thought about it many times before. It'd be a singleplayer game a bit like the early YuGiOh games where you go explore and get virtual card packs etc.

Haha I've never played hearthstone, but that is very encouraging to hear that I'm not stealing lol. Thanks for the help too! Apparently on a forum I visited a lot of the card players were saying how TCG/CCG were a dying medium unless you're already a well established game (Yu-Gi-Oh!, mtg, etc). They said people are moving towards LCG's and deck building games. Granted the thread was 4 years old but I really don't like those types.. I grew up on TCG's and CCG's. I thought about making it a digital TCG for a moment and then I realized I was getting too far ahead of myself and figured I should get a working game first.

Anyway I don't wanna hijack the PWOYM thread with my card game stuff.. maybe I will make a thread for it.

Thanks again for the help and support, man! Means a lot!

I got Black Desert to be a lot more stable... the game's a lot of fun so far! Though I am unsure of where the 'Multiplayer' part comes in. So far it feels like a massive singleplayer game with other players dotted around.

Whenever I end up watching youtube suggestion videos, or click-bait top 10 articles, I feel like a horse licking dirt because there's no grass to eat. Sometimes I think memes are a coping mechanism to supplement the lack of entertainment value. If people were truly satisfied with a game or tv series, they wouldn't break it down and poke holes in it.

Group presentation rehearsal went terrible today. Not looking forward to Thursday...

Money could be a good motivator. Or mostly like the media; enough to like/love it and appreciate it, but also realise its shortcomings.
