Post What's on Your Mind

I broke/unbroke/broke/unbroke/broke/unbroke up with my girlfriend today. And all because I want her to stop smoking weed. A year and a half of dating brought down because of her need to light up a joint.

I feel in the gutter. :sad:

GODDAMN THEM ALL

I WAS TOLD we'd cruise the seas for american gold;

We'd fire no guns, shed no tears;

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,

The last of Barrett's privateers.

Making a game is a lot more work than writing a novel, though.
Yeah... I'm just tired of starting this story over and not knowing if it's exciting enough or boring or what. ><
Well, the story is the same regardless of the medium, right? For a first draft, don't worry about pacing or anything like that. Just try to get to the end no matter what.

That's true! I almost want to just draw it, since it's easier to draw the character's race than describe it to me. XD

But I might just be lazy. o.o

I keep reading these nice fantasy books where the author seems like they know what they're doing, but I'm not "learning" anything that I can apply.

I hear things like, "pick your favorite books and study what you like about the writing."

Lately, it seems every book I read gets 5 stars on Goodreads, whether it's good or not. Even books no one seems to like. XD

Well, what are you trying to learn? I feel like you don't learn a whole lot by reading normally. You have to analyze the story: identify plot points, see how they transition between events, study the pacing, dissect the sentence structure and word choice, etc. You can identify what you're most concerned about and look for that in particular. For example, I struggle with describing repeating emotions without getting repetitive or using cliches, so I try to study how writers describe them when I read.

Anyway, you could consider making a visual novel if you really don't like writing descriptive prose. They're a lot less work to make than a normal game, but you'll need background art from somewhere.

I think I'm trying to learn anything. I notice that I write a lot of "She walked over to..." or "Angry, he moved across the room".

A paragraph to me might be something like:

Staring out the window, the girl sighed. She had always loved going outside, but the heavy rain prevented any plans. Getting up from the chair, the girl moved across the room, over to the fireplace. She picked up a log and tossed it on top of the ones already inside, creating a bigger fire.

In my stories, this is would be example of the reader's first time know about such place. They don't know what looks like. And I see a lot of "looking at", "sighing" or "groaning", "standing up/getting up", and "walked to/moving to".

It seems so off.
