And on the topic of whether what got said was rude or not... Just FYI for you college and high school boys (and maybe younger), jokingly saying a girl is a dog is considered pretty tasteless. Basically, the only guy I know who would joke about something like that in front of the girl (when she clearly finds it offensive) is notoriously socially awkward (he's 29 but still hasn't had a girlfriend, haha :P). In my experience, guys only call a girl a dog when they're bagging on her, they don't "joke" about it when they know the girl would get offended unless they are like totally socially inept.

Haha, the socially-awkward guy says that too... Actually, the "inherent sexism" comes from the fact that they're viewed differently because they're used differently. I think when you get older and have more experience with women, you'll understand that that term more commonly used in a derrogatory way when applied to women (and that's why they're conditioned to react the way they do). Socially they have very different connotations.

If you call a girl a dog and except her to think it's funny when she's hurt by it, you're automatically labeling yourself as either an asshole, or a guy with a really socially awkward sense of humor that doesn't get out much :P

Who cares? That may be the more common usage, but it clearly wasn't intended. Furthermore, just because the negative use of dog is more common with women doesn't mean that it SHOULD be that way.

Also, I really resent the labelling of anyone as "socially awkward". The kinds of people who adhere tightly to social norms and look down upon anyone who missteps in any way have sticks up their asses, imho, and I generally avoid associating with them. I judge my friends by how friendly they are and nothing else.

I'm not talking about things like high school fashion trends. I'm talking about folks who haven't developed such social skills as the ability to empathize, or the ability to assess a situation and determine if behaving a particular way is appropriate or not (like what Calibre said... if you commonly use "dog" with your female friends in a non-offensive way that's fine, but on the internet, it's pretty low brow).
