Police Say Dozen People Watched Calif. Gang Rape

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwxiCVVGnZ8

This is a sad story. I hope they get the rest of the people who committed this crime. It is a disgrace some people just watched it and did not report it.

Awesome Bro

If I was a witness, I wouldn't step in and stop anything because that's putting myself in danger. But I'd certainly call the authorities or do something anonymously at least!

Pretty sick

"What if that happened to me, I was at the dance"

Somehow I don't think you need to worry about that. <.<

Also holy fuck that narrator is dumbing down his english and speech so much is it just him or is all American TV in simple and slow english

news in the u.s. is intentionally watered down, slowed down, and censored, to a level that would be understandable to a 3rd grader.
seriously i took a course in tv journalism, that's what we were told on day 1
we had to rehearse saying our voiceover lines and the only direction everyone kept getting was "slower, no, even slower."
it's just awful

basically RKO it's the bystander effect at its most basic. the more people there are to witness something terrible like that, the less likely they are to help. they're on the fence as to whether or not they should help, and so they look to everyone else to determine what they should do. the problem is that everyone else is also thinking the same thing, so everyone's just standing around dumbfounded with hesitation.

What the...

No, seriously, what? Watched? I am pretty sure that's just not...logical. Did they like the scene or something? Or were they too afraid? Or were they part of the crime?

Or is this just...Oh I don't know anymore. ._.

It's psychology 101. The more people surrounding a crime in progress, the less likely it is that anyone will intervene. It's called the bystander effect. A classic example of this is a murder that happened in a crowded courtyard where not only did nobody help, but the murderer went away and came before finishing the job. (It's the case of Kitty Genovese, which was mentioned earlier)

I see. Man, I read that Kitty Genovese case now and I...am not sure how to feel about it. It's just stunning. I've never been put in such a situation to be honest but I can imagine how the victim would feel and it's just not pleasant at all.

it's probably what was going on in the case of the 3 planes in 9/11 which hit successfully--i mean you have only 3-4 terrorists with crappy box cutters versus about ~90 people, but all of them just behaved and played nice until their doom. in the one that went down without hitting a target the people actually decided to do something.

when it comes down to it, a crowd can only be successful in vigilante justice if there is one or several people around with that type-A, take-charge personality, and enough courage to stand up and fight.

recently, locally, there was an unarmed man who groped and tried to snatch a little girl in a Wal-Mart. People were crying out about it but the only person to actually get up and try to stop him was a man in a wheelchair at the entrance, who grappled onto his midsection as he was running by and pinned him using only his arms.

if you're in that situation you just have to hope someone will do something instead of just become a dumb sheep.

well i think the 9/11 thing was more that people believed if they behaved everyone would be safe. no one expected kamikazes...

I learned about this in a SOC class before. It's called "The culture of Silence"; it's exactly what Stevo said, people won't call out because that puts them as being an outcast or outsider, thus alienating themselves from the others. It's a common thing really. Sad, but true.

Makes sense. It is like people are just like, "Oh good poor victim! I hope someone will help them."

It's rare when you find someone actually doing something about it. If the crowd of the people who watched the poor girl being raped did something about or helped her, pretty sure she wouldn't have been hospitalized now or at least not as bad.

better than going over there and getting stabbed or raped yourself.

also i never watched the video, i got bored of waiting for the dude to finish his words.

Umm but if it's a group together, wouldn't they be able to do something? Or at least call the police, that is safe and quick.
