Pass it on! (Community Project)

North Hemisphere seasons are
Spring - March through May or June
Summer - June through August or September

Depends on whether you want Meteorological or Astronomical seasons.

Okay everyone! The order is in!

The order for people working on the first edition of Pass it on will be as follows:

Introduction: Dadevster
First part: Guardian
Second part: piggman77
Third part: Tdata
Fourth part: inu323
Fifth part: goldenryu9292
Sixth part: LostPetal
Seventh part: Davey
Eighth part: KRoP
Conclusion: Dadevster

Like I mentioned, Pass it on should start around the beginning of February, depending on how much time I get to work on the introduction. If all goes well and there are no complications, Guardian should be able to start working on this by around the 6th of February, only a couple weeks away. If anyone has any objections to how I've ordered people then feel free to tell me.

ALSO: I wanted some input from you guys. I'm still not quite sure what we're going to do with tilesets. I'm debating between just the RTP or using a Master Tileset. (every single tileset combined into one) With just the RTP as it is, things are kept simple. However, I dislike how you're so limited. On the other hand, with a master tileset, everything is available at once, but things can get a little jumbled and mapping is a bit more difficult. Input is appreciated as always.

I prefer regular RTP, but as long as I don't have to set passability, I'm fine with it, although it will take some getting used to. So I should start around April 5th at the latest?

(btw, you majorly misspelled my username)

Sorry 'bout that goldy, fixed. (mispelled my own about five times at the end, heh)

Passabilities will be all set at the beginning. And April is probably a good estimate. It's pretty far right now, but if people get done quicker then it could be much earlier than expected.

Is there any reason that both couldn't be in the game? I realize that some amount of consistency is desired, that the game is meant to teach, but I don't think it would be a big deal if the maps switched between default RTP and a master RTP. That way those who wanted could use the normal maps, and others could build with the master tileset. I know that I personally would build with the master tileset if it's provided.

I guess it's a possibility. The issue I'm having with the Master Tileset rightnow is that it's so big that RMXP is having problems for some reason and it's impossible to scrool down to the last quarter of the tileset in the map editor. Currently working on it.

If more people want both the Master Tileset and just RTP, then that's what I'll do. I'd prefer it one or the other, but it really doesn't matter when you think about it.

I was hoping to get a spot near the conclusion. :3

Yeah, it's not just you. The best you can do, really, is press the down/up arrow after clicking on the tileset's scrolling bar.

Nice, the seventh part

I think it should be just RTP. It's very annoying to scroll up and down with the master tileset...

Quick update on the introduction status: I've started with all the mapping and am working on how stats will be handled. The database will be the hardest part, but I think I know how I'm going to handle it.

Right now I'm leaning towards a master tileset, mostly because of being able to have a wider variety of tiles in one map, which is good for things like cities and towns. (not to mention the fact that all the mapping I've done has been with the master tileset) If people really want both to be in then that's what will happen. Any more input on this? (it doesn't just have to be from people participating, everyone's free to give comments! )

So far no snags. Progress will be slow though, mostly because of school work. If all goes smoothly, this should "officially" start on the weekened of the 7th in February, just over two weeks from now.

Okay, I think I'm going to use a combination of master and RTP tilesets, just so people can use what they want. The master tileset is a bit hard to work with, especially for beginners, so people are free to use any of the RTP tilesets if they wish.

I haven't had as much time to work on this as I had anticipated, so the weekend of the 7th looks like it'll be stretching it, especially with school starting again. I'm still working out stat tables, and mapping has been taking longer than expected. For now, I'll shoot for around the 14th, at the latest. (gah, I feel horrible for delaying this)

I got a good feeling about this, I really like how the introduction is shaping up.

I'm trying to make this as good as possible, and I don't have much time to work on this. I'd rather get it done right than rush to do only a half-job.

Besides, it's only a week :)

When Can I expect a Demo of this? it sounds genuinely interesting, too bad I can't join this looks like it'll actually be fun to make

The game (first edition) will be available to the public when everybody is done making their parts. This could take anywhere from two or three months to four or five months, maybe more. It's been taking a little while longer than I anticipated, but hopefully by this weekend I can wrap everything up and things'll get started.

When the "passing on" begins I'll get some screenshots and a brief plot summary on what's happened so far, so the topic'll be moved to Project Discussion. When each person finishes their part, I'll put some screenies of what they've done (showing what they want of course) so people can get a little glimpse of what's going on so far.

I've managed to create a decent-looking party selector with just events. The basic functionality has been ironed out, so I'll just have to increase the size (I'm thinking for allowing 7 party members besides the main character) and add a couple of things. I'm going to add in switches for when a certain actor is available and I may include a locking addition so you'll be able to keep certain actors in the party. Of course, the standard method of adding/removing actors will still available and you can choose to not include the system in certain areas. The biggest problem will be writing up the instructions for it since I barely know what I've done myself. ^_^;

However, I need to know if I can create a tileset. I know we have the "no custom" policy, but I need to make a divider and some text so the player can differentiate between the party and reserve members.

This sounds like a wonderful idea!

More and more, we can see the Internet moving towards community efforts (i.e. Wikipedia, YouTube, MySpace) to complete tasks which are impossible for one person to do. This "Pass it On" project is another stride towards community accomplishments.

I look forward to participating in the next edition.

Question: Can we collaborate on one part? Like, can we have two people working together to make one 20 minute section?
