Also, don't worry about anatomy and style, those are just difficult words that dumb people like to use so they sound smart.

Are you ...... Are you serious.

I need to know.

I have a hard time discerning sarcasm on the internet.

And I really need to know if you're being serious.

Because that would be ... Just ... Awful ...
Yeah, it could be awful, but fuck it.
Anatomy is just a difficult word that idiots use to look smart.
There is no need for it, for it doesn't matter as much as you study, you won't be able to draw or to pixelize the true anatomy of the human body, only with photographies.

meian and snowkaiser you both are grong about me well i can tell you meian you can suck my #$%&

A- are you serious? Seriously , to whom it may concern , if you don't know shit about art shut the hell up. Using copyrighted art for reference in ORIGINAL work is the WORST habit you can get into
but snowkaiser im not telling him to take any licensed material i know that is badly suckish im telling him to play those games and reformulate his way to create characters, its obvious that he has no base and he didnt know companies like mist walker and capcom or konami who REALLY ARE THE BEST in this business like tri ace and square enix and ID software im not telling him that STEAL any of his works im only telling him to see them and then he will have a base to be a better character designer... THATS ALL

No, you suck my #$%&.

You're saying exactly what you said before, reworded, so SK's criticisms still stands. Furthermore, Linis' problem doesn't seem to be not looking at enough jRPG's, IMHO, it's that he's looking at them too much. (Sorry, Linis, for the additional criticism - you've been a tremendous sport).

So, no, don't tell him to go look at other people's designs for bases - how 'bout he start with a naked body and work his way up like any half-proficient character designer would do. How 'bout you don't tell him his badass dark characters and evil villainy types must look like the shit you spewed forth. How 'bout you go crawl back to whatever moldy, uninspired hole you wriggled out from and continue making Square-shipping games or whatever it is you people do.

And for god's sakes, try some punctuation or capitalization for once. The shift and period keys are free of charge, forever.

Linis, as stated by many other people here, the artwork can be improved. I'm sure you can get there with some practice. Hell, it took me 2 years for me to draw the way I do now, and i had a lot of support from my schoolmates.

Don't give up on yourself, keep practicing. Always have images for pose/clothes/anatomy references handy so you can check on them to get some ideas.

A good way of practicing is TRACING. Although it doesn't look like a good thing to do, tracing can actually train your hand to make cleaner and smoother lines. BUT! even if you trace, do not use the traced image and claim as your own.

Try for yourself. Believe me, it's actually a good way to practice.

I've never been a big fan of tracing, personally. I think maybe tracing by hand might be better - but then, that's probably better for getting the shape of things right and not the smoothness of the lines.

When I started working seriously on art, and became worried about line quality, I liked to perfect shapes - ie, I drew circles until I got perfect circles every time, lines till they were always straight, etc. It's also how I got the hang of hands and heads - just hundreds of hands and heads 'till I thought I got the shape of them automatically.

Repetition, though, is the key to practice, and this would happen in both tracing and shapes'n'stuff.

correct.

I meant, eye-tracing, by the way, tracing without having the second paper on top of the original design. I'd normally edit my boo-boo but you already quoted it, so ... ;o;

Still think it's a bad practice to get into, IMHO.

Way to derail the train, guys.

Actually I think tracing is a nice place to start out, atleast at the very very very beginning. When you trace, you can memorize strokes and movements which correlate with body parts, so you can imitate that motion later.

Tracing is in fact a very effective way to help ones art evolve. Although, it should only be used as a crutch to help your mind grasp a certain style. But I must say I agree with Meian in as far as eye-tracing as a better alternative. And drawing from life is BY FAR the most effective and efficient method to learn to draw.

Here is a link to a site from which you can download some TERRIFIC PDF's on drawing by an amazing artist.

They are old school, but the methods are all standard. I would also suggest that a local library, in the right place, will generally have some good books on drawing techniques. Unless you live in a small town like mine. =P

Oh god, this post. This post. :psy: Yes, there truly is a need to understand basic human anatomy, otherwise you get abominations like men with woman hips and women with tits that act like opposite magnets.

Well since this thread certainly got compleatly off track I'll lock this before more arguing happens. Feel free to debate about stuff like this on other parts of the board though. And try to stay on topic guys ^^;
