Mother 3 Translation Released

Marcus,

I think that your the only one who would post stuff like that up,
I bet you not many other people saw that in a kids game (but if they did WTF?!?!?!)

Yours Truly,

Does being a kid's game mean that it can't have darker overtones or wholly un-kiddy influences?

Sincerely

I actually never noticed it until I found that picture on the internets but when I did play EB in 95 there was always something inherently scary about it.  I'm not going to dare say it's a kids game because Itoi never meant it to be one and if you read any interview with him he talks about some of the strangest things (like how game design can be compared to menstruation).  It's a game that could enjoyed by children but like the greatest Disney movies it can only be truly absolutely appreciated by adults.

The Giygas thing was 100% intentional by the director.  It's not like people who try to draw parallels between the number 7 and Paradise Lost while playing Final Fantasy 7.

I have nothing to say about this except: HOLY SHIT GGOOD GMAE!!!!

of course that's about the game itself, not the translation. the translations IS good, though. it doesn't reek of japfag like a lot of others I've seen.

also I lol'd when I first saw Beanstalk at Tazmily's crossroad.

Well it is called *MOTHER* 3 for a reason :P

Anyways, the game is awesome and the translation is surprisingly accurate. Amazing how much better a fan translation can be quality wise over a corporate one.

I was actually hoping that they'd get this out before Reggie came out with localization plans. Nintendo's been better recently than their past LETS CENSOR THE RED CROSS AND THE WORD "DIE" days, but I'm sure they'd still end up taking out a few nuances to make it less "heavy." I bet the magical transvestites would be tamed down a little, too. I'm not one to really care about HEY THIS GAME MUST BE 100% JAPANESE VERSION DESUKA! but it's nice that this way the game managed to skip censorship, at least. They even have some cuss words in there! :0!!

the game itself is pretty fun. there are some definite spots where you need to stop and grind, but the battle system is at least a bit more interesting than the gamut of final fantasies, so it's not quite as bad. there are a few minor errors with the translation, like "to" repeating after a line break, some spelling errors, and a glitch in the Battle Memory where "eap" stayed at the bottom of the list after I scrolled the rest of it off, but this is just version 1 and I'm confident that people are gonna report these sorts of things -- and I should be glad that it's nothing that'd make me have to download and reapply the new patch to keep playing. the story itself... well, I can't really comment on how the story unfolds, because by this point I know most of it already, but I'm assuming the delivery would be pretty effective. there's a lot of unexpected cool stuff, too -- presents that don't have anything IN them but set off effects like a reggae beat or fireworks, Duster's ability to sometimes pull off a cool move at the start of a battle (he's a gimp but a fast one,) and the everpresent doorknob, to name a few.

I'm actually finding the game to be easier now than in Japanese. Not just because I know what to do now, but I'm talking about battles and comboing. For example, Chapter 1 went a lot smoother than when I played it in Japanese, and I'm pretty sure I didn't do much differently. I think one reason is that I'm getting into more battles on purpose, because hell, battles are fun! Comboing is a lot easier in English for some reason.

i only played it for 10-15 minutes, but i already aint feelin the graphics. they look like they were made by the guy/s who made the mario & luigi rpg sprites to me. the colors seem really soft, and everything just looks fluffy for some reason. :\

i'm probably expecting this to be too much like earthbound, tho.

it was spring break and I was a crazy teenager. I'd try anything once.

as a sidenote,
I wonder whose blood that is in the basement of the chimera place? if someone had been killed, I expect they'd make more note of it (since all the other guys are just sitting around and saying "ouch."

I religiously spoiled absolutely nothing to myself. I'm so glad about that decision! This is one of maybe two games that actually touched me to the extent that I cried.
I think the translaton captured the intended spirit perfectly... And, no offense intended, but if the first thing I saw upon playing were fan-added references to bands... Well anyway I think everything turned out great!
Also, I'm personally thankful to nintedo for allowing this game to be made and not intefering with the translation.

Man, this game is fucking awesomeness made game.
I mean, i'm a huge hater of RPGs with 10 years old boys, side view battle system etc etc, but this game made me like everything.

Game of the year.
