Yeah, we stuck as close to the spirit of the Earthbound translation as we could (i.e. pencils over squids.) The only part where we deviated was in the extra names you can choose (y'know, where it asks "What do you want to name this boy?" at the beginning. I suggested one of Flint and Hinawa's "don't care" names should be Coheed and Cambria
speaking of which, I'm a little excited to see just what they chose for those. i.e. anything from SMAP or whatever that one band was localization-shifted into Beatles names, etc.
Wow, that is awesome! I'd heard rumors, but I didn't even know a Mother 3 had been released! I'm definitely looking forward to this. It's no Earthbound 64, but oh well.
When you guys started it, like finished naming and such, did you notice something really weird? After I finished naming all the characters and press OK, the game slowed down and made some really weird noises (I know it plays weird noises but I mean not the usual kind) and I thought the game would crash.
Although so far I am really impressed with it, having the text set on fast makes the game look really smooth. After playing the Japanese version for so long, the text looks really small and narrow, especially in the menus and battles. But I really like it (although saving makes me nervous as it plays a weird sound when you do so) I should probably slow down, though. I'm trying to enjoy it and stop and smell the roses every once in a while, but after finishing Chapter 1 at least five times already in half a year, I'm a little tired of it. (bizarre, I know) I'm already at the part where
Flint rescues Fuel (not much of a spoiler or very far into the game, I know, I'm taking my time)
I promised myself I wouldn't beat more than a chapter a week ('cept Chapter 6). It's not as good when you already know 95% of the games plot, though.
Hell, why am I still here? I should be beating up wild potatoes with a stick! :D

that's happened to me every time I pass the naming screen or seen someone pass the naming screen. I didn't notive a decrease in the performance percentage, either, so I'm assuming that that's just the effect -- it sounds like it's slowing down, but it isn't. the effect just sounds errily similar to what we get when an emulator lags.
that said, if it is lag, then at least it doesn't seem to be anything game-killing.
I'm not very happy with a few of the localization attempts they've made. for one thing, a lot of the enemies were given really faggy pun-names "in accordance with earthbound's naming scheme," but they really don't make that much sense and actually can get pretty awful at times (UNWELCOME GUST!? NAVY SQUEAL!?)
another one is a spoiler. don't read it if you haven't already spoiled the ending for yourself or something.
Pokey's namechange to Porky was really pointless in my books. mato did it to be a bit closer to the officially-translated bits of Mother 3 (i.e. SSBB,) but he failed to take into account that Brawl's translation of Mother 3 was an incredibly quick and slipshod deal (THEY NAMED THE FUCKING TOWN TAZUMILI, THEY JUST GRABBED ONE OF THEIR ASIAN WORKERS AND ASKED HIM TO WRITE IT DOWN PHONETICALLY AND CALL IT A DAY.) given the choice between being faithful to Brawl or being faithful to Earthbound, I would have chosen Earthbound over Earthbound's rich uncle.
besides, apparently some japanese chick explicitly states that phonetically it's "po-ki." in japanese you can't even PRONOUNCE Rs, for christsake.
but, hey, the game is pretty fun otherwise. VBA's slight discrepancy between sound playback speed and framerate kills me when it comes to the rhythm battle stuff, though.
Strangely, I can combo better on emulators than on actual hardware. It's weird, but I'm finally starting to get it. Some songs are better than others, though-on good songs I can sometimes get 9 or 10 hit combos, whereas most songs I can't get past three. It kind of helps if you count "one-two-three-four" as you do it and tap your foot or bob your head while not looking at the screen. (weird, I know)
no, he said he wasn't going to deal with you and some other member fighting like ten-year-olds.
des, the game is mostly independent of Earthbound -- the plot ties in with Earthbound near the end, and with Earthbound you'll be able to pick up some of the details that Mother 3 doesn't cover, but the experience isn't totally depent on you having played it in the past.
that said, I'd definitely suggest you go through Earthbound at some point. The plot doesn't tie in until the last chapter, though, so you can take your time.
@ Miek: I wasnt fighting like a ten year old but I do admit that my response was unecisary,
But I didnt swear at him unlike his response and I did end up trying to help him :thumb: before Phage locked the topic
i have a hard time with earthbound. i've tried to play it multiple times but each time i am only greeted with HORRIBLE NIGHTMARES OF POKEY'S MOTHER (seriously that's the most hideous fucking sprite ever made (intentionally so but it doesn't change the fact))

The Mother series contains some of the most disturbing things from any video game but combines it in a "light-hearted" package which makes it even creepier. The original Giegue/Gyiyg was also the inspiration for Mewtwo.
