Makasu's exploration of the arts!

Anyways as some of you may or may not know I'm an artist. [[Err wannabe at that. ]] I'm pretty much self taught [[because me and art instructors never can manage to get along.]]
ANYWAYS I would one day like to pursue a career as a[n] comic book artist but again I have anatomy issues and things like that. I started drawing when I was about 4 years old. And ever since then its been like a non-stop ride of learning! Of course being self-taught means I cut A LOT of corners. I'm not going to lie on that behalf...I'm actually rather ashamed because of it and I feel it hinders my artistic abilities to this date. I would one day hope to learn all the things that I haven't learned or I've yet to learn [[I need to find a definitive style as well]] but again laziness sets in and other things distract me from my studies... Blah blah blah. What do you care? Here's the art!

I will be posting art here regularly as I come up with pieces and things like that. I guess I'm mainly looking for critique because my DA and my myspace don't seem to get me what I want and Rmxp.org generally gives that tough love that I'm looking for.

Most of these are horrible. I'm only proud of a few.

But let me know what you think!

I don't care if I get harsh comments or not because it'll help me to grow as an artist in the long haul y'know?  :thumb:

So have at em! Now these are in worst-best order [[in my opinion]] and there are a lot of my ex girlfriend in here [[long story]]

I'm mainly hoping to improve my skills as an artist so hopefully by you guys posting what you think of my artworks will help me to understand art better from different peoples perspectives and such.

PORTFOLIO STUFF!!!
Needed to help me get into college this is where your comments and crits are greatly needed and appreciated. Help ME get into college by pointing out the things YOU don't like about these pieces.

Managing this is becoming cumbersome. Quit being lazy and look through the damn pages!

You have a real painter's work. The way you use textured brushes in conjunction make your realism pieces stand out that much better, but above that, you simplify your strokes into those which are absolutely needed.
And that is a very strong skill you have.
So your realistic portraits are very strong, both in color and form, but then all of a sudden your fantasy pieces are cluttered, messy, and not as appealing.

Brendizzle and Alejandra are your 2 strongest. I'd advise you take a look at them and see what makes them work better than others. Then apply that to your other pieces.

Other than that, impressive works. Is it coral painter that you have?

Hahah thanks much on the feedback. Yeah I'm not going to lie my fantasy pieces are not the greatest things in the world. :/ I'm absolutely horrible at anatomy, enviroments and all sorts of other things like that.

I'll try to work on getting them up to par.

And I'm not really a fan of "Brendizzle" [[or my titles for that matter]] for the simple fact that the background is absolutely horrible among other things in the piece. But hair is also something I need to improve greatly upon. As you can tell I tend to blend it to much or not enough as is the case with "Alejandra" the one that I like.

Because curls are a bitch to render. Hahahaha.

And yes it is Corel Painter X.

My tablet isn't pressure sensitive in photoshop for some odd reason. :/

I would love to start working in photoshop more but yeah the whole tablet issue is a hinderance more than anything.

Either ways greatly appreciated and all is being taken into consideration! :thumb: keep em coming please?

I'd want to improve greatly.

And I know plenty of artists plague rmxp.org.

In brendizzle the undetailed hair helps add to the composition, not take it away, like in Sanparuzu.
Its a lot more fitting.
If its flat hair, then its not a problem with detail, if its curly hair, then it needs all the detail.

In before tl;dr

I'm just a tad bit confused. Sanparuzu is my devart name! Lol

But I get what you're saying!

Ale needs more detail in the hair while Brenda's hair is fine for the style that the picture was done in?
I think?

I'll try to focus more on hair details and things of that matter.
I would also like to get pictures to be the same direction as the original that I'm basing them off of. I mean the one of Kato is slightly off just a tad bit. Not a tad bit a lot. But I mean I guess that'll come with practice.

Although the end threw me for a complete loop. Hahaha.

But "In before tl;dr"

What does that mean?

Shadow_Strike":2riqvm0p said:
You're new to the internet, aren't you?

No. I'm just not familiar with what that meant...

My only real gripe here is that your 'fix' of the girl in the pool of water was turning her into a Night Elf. <_< boo wow

Hahaha yeah thats why I gave up on it. I was looking through the World of Warcraft artbook and noticed that all of their elves were that skin color so I figured mine should be as well. I'm not familiar with Elves and other things like that. Unless we're talking about Oblivion. Then I could identify them. Lol

But is that necessarily a bad thing that its a dark elf?

Elven looks are pretty straight forward. They're usually slender and taller with longer ears. Usually.
tl;dr means "too long; didn't read". In before... well. In before someone says its too long and they didn't read it.

I like the lighter skinned elf, but the background really bugs me. Its just not... fitting. The water merges with the sky and tells me its vast and oceanic in looks when it looks like its just a small pool of water, and the cliffs look like they're far away because they just kinda sit there without much interaction with the translucency of the water.

Ha. I've never even noticed that. I never even took that into consideration.

As I've stated a lot of cut corners were taken in me learning art.

Environments, compositions, anatomy and various other things have yet to be fully grasped by me.

And I was also not familiar that elves had a certain anatomical structure to them. I mean if I'm correct Link is an elf and he has moderately sized ears.

I just figured they had the figure of an average human with just slightly longer ears.

Although FF12's Fran would've been a good source to think of. But she's not necessarily an elf. :/

Very much noted nonetheless. I'll try and work on the backgrounds, compositions and other things like that.

Thanks for pointing that out!

And I've never heard of, "too long; didn't read"
So thats a new one.

Well also remember elves are fantasy, imagination, false, do not exist, have no template.

As for cutting corners... well. We all do that. You just need to learn how to cut them gracefully.

Now are your portraits from photo or real life? Because right now something tells me you used a photo-ref. And you're certainly good at that. Just your spontaneous works (the fantasy, not-from-ref) need in lieu of improvements. And well... just repetition can cure that. I've also yet to see body works.

At anyrate. If you feel the slightest bit helped, I encourage you to go and help other people.

True  but they are based upon a real object. As they resemble that structure of a human for the most part.

Yeah thats true. I'll work on it! I gotta step it up seriously. >:]

And yeah they're from photo-ref because I can never get a person to sit still long enough for me to do one in real life. :p

And I get you. I'll work on that as well. :]

But yeah I'll post some anatomy 'studies' that I've done here and there.
Just to show how badly they suck. Hahaha.

And why yes I feel I've been helped greatly! I appreciate all of the feedback that I've received so far! I feel its helped a bit on my quest to master the arts fully! And all of the pointers I've received have been taken to heart and will be taken to consideration. You've all been a great help and I appreciate it greatly. :]

So thank you for the response and feedback as well as opinions. Everyone's views matter so if you're feeling shy there's no need to be! I don't bite. Hahah.

Am I allowed to double post in my own topic?

anyways just something I'm currently working on at the moment.

And yes I'm well aware that the 'dragon' looks more like an 'alligator' but I'm doing this without reference so this is what they look like of the top of my head. Hahaha. I'm going to solidify the lines, throw in some colors and refine the girl riding on the dragon more.

But this is about 5 mins worth of work.

The background I'm undecided on. :p

I'm going to try to do this entirely in Sketchbook pro because its been sitting on my computer and needs a little bit of love. Hahah. Or maybe I'll port it to photoshop for the coloring and things?

Let me know what you think!

Don't draw inspiration from WoW's art books <_< that game has some of the most appalling character designs i'v ever laid eyes on ever. And i went to school with allot of really shitty character designers. So please don't. Especially since you actually seem to have a talent for (digital?) paint.

Also, double post away. I do it in my topic allot. .. because no one cares ;D

Hahaha very much noted. :]

And really? I thought the character designs in the book of art were kinda spectacular. But then again I'm not really a full-fledged artist and have only taken [[and gotten kicked out of]] basic art classes. So I'll take it from someone who knows what they're talking about. Hahaha.

And why thank you! Makes me feel like I have a little bit of artistic nature in me. :) greatly appreciated.

And also noted on the double posting. ;)

Good looking out!

And thank you greatly on the words.

World of Warcraft has amazing character concepts, and we all know when people are influenced by it. The way the armor meshes, the details - everything. Its also a lot better to trek down your own path of ideas, but it is okay to be influenced slightly, after all art is just subtle plagarism.

I have to say I'm jealous of your ability to draw volumes.

That is true. The artist Marco Nelor is heavily influenced by WoW's art. But then again WoW is influenced off of maybe some other fantasy type y'know?

So I feel you on that. :)

And what is 'volumes'? I know it may seem like a dumb question but I have no idea if thats to be considered sarcasm or a compliment.

Either ways thanks nonetheless! I think?

Well I'm going to post on this again because I have something kinda new to show.

Its the first early concept for a playable character in my RPG "Dead on Arrival"

dead%20on%20arrival%20conept1.jpg

I really need to start working smaller. I'm sorry about that its just sketchbook pro doesn't allow for you to pick a canvas size. :/

Anyways nothing spectacular. The concept will more than likely change way before the game actually has the first demo done. It will need to seeing as how I did this in like 6 mins.
