I must know, do they have any really good metal bands over there? I know of a couple, but a lot of what i hear from japan is either creepy and sad and poetic or really poppy.

Eh, sort of. Most bands seem to be poppy, rocky, or folksy, and then there are the alternative bands that are "creepy and sad" (though not necessarily poetic) like Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer, Moi Dix Mois, and L'Arc~en~Ciel. The most "metal" band I can think of is X Japan. I'm sure there's more, though, but I don't really listen to metal ^_^;

I can't really answer that just this moment, but I'm actually going to Hiroshima in a few days.

The best I can do is postulate on why there's still people there (and, for that matter, more than there were in WWII): Why dwell in the past when you can rebuild?

As for the nuclear fallout... No idea. I do know that a good chunk of land where the bomb hit, though, is now a national peace park.

iirc the hiroshima bomb was detonated some 500+m above ground level to maximize the destruction from the initial impact, but doing so reduced the amount of radionuclides settling on the surface (it mostly being blown upward in the mushroom cloud and falling as rain). there were thousands of radiation-related deaths in the months immediately after the explosion, and increases in stillbirths and lukemia and such and such, but the relatively small amount of radioactive material that was deposited exhausted it's half life quickly enough and it's more or less safe there now.

chernobyl is somewhat similar; it happened in the 80's but if you look at the surrounding area it's very much alive with plants and lynx and bears and stuff (and a few thousand people who moved back there over time)

they detonated a lot of test bombs in the deserts of the US...maybe fallout isnt as bad as they say it is. Never trust "they"

Nikki, tests have shown that Las Vegas has slightly radioactive ground water. In this case, the "they" you shouldn't trust are the ones saying that underground detonations leave the radiation where the bomb exploded.

Oh, and Tindy, how popular are cats in Japan? (Also, there's a new RMXP mapping tutorial you should check out. I think they could use a significant amount of good criticism)

Cats should be popular there IMO. they dont take up much space and they have that kawaii thing going on. cats look like living pokemon.

Awesome Bro

I've just thought of another question...

So in Japan, do they have takeaways, like chinese food, burgers, pizza, kebabs etc ?

... A place without any takeaways would be like living in Purgatory...

Nikki: Cats are around, but I don't think they're as popular as dogs (didn't I already answer this...?)

Jbrist: They do have takeout. :D

I thought nuclear bombs were supposed to poison the land for centuries. how come people still live in hiroshima?

The really bad offenders would be hydrogen bombs, or "dirty" bombs, neither of which was detonated in Japan. The difference is that the Hiroshima bomb's destructiveness is measured in kilotons (of TNT to explode with the same force), whereas H-bombs are measured in megatons. Kilo = 1,000, mega = 1,000,000.

Most of the radiation in normal atomic weaponry gets absorbed by unenriched fuel on the outside of the bomb (like Uranium-238) which still detonate, but do not release radiation (and thus do not continue the chain reaction). A dirty bomb would not contain this fuel, meaning it would not be nearly as destructive, but it would poison the land for centuries, as described. Dirty bombs are banned by international non-proliferation treaties.

So since Japan is pretty much the robotic country of the world, and you just know one of these days, Sony will create a robotic overlord that will crush humanity...

... How many people do you see daily that are walking around with some sort of gadget, like a handheld console, a PDA, mobile phone, netbook, whatever ?

Cause I saw this program on tele once, and this guy went to Japan, and like 7/10 people on the train were using some sort of gadget, and weren't even being cautious that someone could easily steal it from their hands...

Which brings me to another question... how much crime is there in Japan ? Cause I mean, they seem so quiet and to themselves, but at the same time, it's like they're not even aware that anything could happen around them... has anything ever happened near you, such as a burglary, or even a street attack, anything exciting ?

mega: But of course.

JBrist: ...yeah. Yeah, there's several thousands of people with item X, Y, or Z in their hands. The biggest offender is cell phones, closely followed by MP3 players. I don't see too many netbooks or PDAs, though.

As for crime...well, I'll be honest, I don't *see* any, but I don't terribly like leaving my purse out in the open while I go to the bathroom, y'know?

Also: Hi, I'm back! I kind of forgot to tell everyone I was going to Hiroshima for a week.

Have you met the Prince of Space, or Gamera?

If I met the Prince of Space, it would be awesome and epic and full of win. And I would yell "I've got ya now, ya scum!" as we made sweet alien Japanese love. Or something like that. O_o

Alas, though the country is full of characters, so far I've only met Elmo and Zoe (from Sesame Street), Hello Kitty, a giant walking snowman, Kimba the White Lion, Astroboy, and the Pink Panther. Oh, and a giant chestnut.
