when you say something in jest, you have to take into account the following things:
a.) does my audience know and understand my personality? because if not, they will not know I'm kidding. (for example: if I came out and said "gays are gross and should be damned!", then since I am generally well-known as being staunchly pro-gay-rights, it will not be taken literally. But since no one knows YOU, then no one will understand whether or not you're joking.)
b.) did I word my witty statement in a way that is clearly a tone of jest, or else did I time it or word it in a humorous manner? Because even if people know you're kidding it still might not be funny.
If you write a statement and you see that you and/or it does not adhere to the above two guidelines, rest assured that it will be taken the wrong way and it will not be funny.
