Human Stupidity

what I've seen, it IS thoroughly within reason, but that's only the reason that we see before us. I'm sorry, but I can't simply pass of what we know as fact, considering how much less we do know.

Don't get me wrong; our knowledge is far, far from being infallible. However, being skeptical purely for the sake of skepticism isn't a good stance to have at all.

If you're going to be a skeptic, you're going to need more than, "Yeah, but we don't know everything". We'll never know everything, so you'll have to learn to accept the most logically sound answers available (or be a pessimist your whole life, whatever floats your boat).

Sometimes it's hard to fathom how idiotic people can be.

The odds of humans not wiping out themselves are the same odds as getting a royal flush in 5 card draw 20 times in a row while getting struck by lightning each time...

Come on now, let's not pull numbers out of our ass to make an already valid point seem more valid.

so are you an Athiest? I'm so confused with you. You don't trust science, yet you are an athiest(correct me if I'm wrong).
or I got my definitions mixed up(realist).

The title said stupidity so I clicked it and what do you know it's chock full of it!

Thread delivers A++. Thank you Sasame Kiryu.

"I'm not being a pessimist, I'm being a realist. I can't simply pass things off as fact just because it seems to make ENOUGH sense without much effort."

Is what I think you meant. IE, its easy to believe the earth is flat from looking at the earth, ergo the earth is flat. It requires more proof and understanding to grasp the idea of a round earth, because suddenly there's gravity, revolutions, axis, etc. to take into account, prove, and understand. The first one was believed for so long because its the easy thing for a lamen to fathom. It looks flat, therefore it is.
I think you were saying that or something like it, right? The easy answer is convienient but that doesnt make it the right one. Idunno.

I am an aethiest, though that doesn't have any bearing on my arguement. I am trying to be a realist, as I'm trying to be realistic.

Realist - One of the seven attitudes. Its positive pole is perception; its negative pole is supposition. Realists view the world in terms of what is; they focus on a situation's objective facts.

X_X you're misunderstanding me... again. I wouldn't just view it as something I can pass off as fact, though I'd be willing to meet half way with what we do know. I'm a realist, not a paranoid schizofrenic =\

BWAHA!! That's almost EXACTLY what I'm trying to say! I missed the word "enough" when I was trying to quote that ;P

Well, things aren't just "passed off as fact" simply because they may vaguely be plausible in some pseudo reality. Hell, String Theory and M-theory make sense - shit even most quantum theories make sense - but none of them are "passed off as fact". Science is about peer review, observation and diagnosis. No, I'm not telling you to accept every single thing that science tells you, but I am telling you that your stance is incredibly pessimistic and, if I may be brash, naive. You are calling yourself a "realist", but you're writing off the ultimate realism in doing so. I'm just not seeing this "realist" in you.

That's because you're misinterpreting my words =\ I can find no other way to explain it to you, otherwise I would. I don't think I've ever made mention of "Passin something off as fact" and direct it toward science, though I do see how you assumed as much....

Well, I assumed such because we were talking about scientific theory and why you would find it irreliable. I don't remember you making any specific transition to a new conversation.

If you're not even arguing that you don't trust science, then what exactly are we arguing about?
