Welcome to HBGames, a leading amateur game development forum and Discord server. All are welcome, and amongst our ranks you will find experts in their field from all aspects of video game design and development.
Please, please, PLEASE tell me you are going to stop the clock after 6PM. That was one of the best features of the original. As an avid HM fan, I am very looking forward to this.
@Ryanna
Well, right now I don't really need a mapper cause I STILL haven't finished ripping the chipsets, but once I'm done I'll be sure to give you a call.
@Darkfire
Stopping the clock at 6PM? Well, since I haven't really played any HM before HM64, I don't really remember this feature. Also, if the clock stopped at 6PM, that means that everyone would be in there houses by that time and making more random events would be harder.
If I could come up with a reason to do so then I might just add that in...
UPDATE!:
I've been working on the time system and I would have to say it is 75% done. It tells you the time perfectly, and I set up the tints as well. The only thing that needs to be added is weather depending on the season and it will be fully operational.
Also, since the time system is basically done, I've started working on the tools~! Right now, the hoe, watering can, and seeds have been programmed, but I still don't have the animation of the main character actually "using" the tool.
I plan on getting them eventually, but right now I'm focusing on your seeds "growing" into plants that you can then harvest.
Screens will come once I have finished more of it. :smile:
In the original Harvest Moon for the SNES, the clock stopped after 6PM until you went to sleep and woke up the next day. The bar was the only thing open in the village, but the mountain was open and obviously, so was your farm. The best part of this was that you were able to clear your field or stockpile all the wood you needed for that next house upgrade all in one night as opposed to doing it over the course of a season, or even a year.
It allowed you to focus on much more important tasks during the day like taking care of your crops (only watering after 6 unless you were married), raising your livestock (time stopped in buildings, btw), and befriend the village people/ courting the girl of your choice.
In my opinion, I'd prefer it to continue beyond 6 PM. The reason why is that it's alot more realistic and everthing takes longer to achieve, meaning a longer game and more to look foward to.
This is just my opinion of course.
Secondly, I've nearly finished Marlins Heart Events, so I'll PM them to you when I've done. Feel free to edit them where neccessary.
Well after 6pm it shows you a calender going to the next day nothing changing its just that you didn't sleep and might have low energy. The only reason to really sleep is to get energy.
Something similar was in AWL, except you slept for six hours at a time, only, and I hated it. A clock that stops allows you to do more each day and thus money increases faster.
Hah, I don't mind a little compitetion. And btw, thanks for the linkie! I will definately use them.
@Darkfire
Well, the only thing good about stopping the clock is the ability to forage for items, which seems unneccasary. Also, as I said before, stopping the clock will lower the amount of time available for time-specific events and such.
Besides, one of the things I like about HM is that time always moves forward... well, except when you're inside of course.
@cadz
No rush, I still have a bit of work to do before I can start adding NPC's.
UPDATE!
For the past couple of days I have been working on implementing seeds, and I would have to say that already, it is 50% done! Although I have only tested one seed (turnips), it grows depending on if you watered and how many days it has been watered.
Heres a litte screenie of it. You can't really "see" the plant growing, but trust me that it works:
Like I said, it is only 50% done. I still have to have it so that you can actually harvest it and get the item, but that shouldn't be too hard. Then I have to add items that regrow and trees, but I'll save those for later. Since I have scripted a suitable amount of the farming script, it's time to finish mapping the town!
I've been ripping from Harvest Moon:DS like crazy and have ripped around 80% of the exteriers. The only things I'm missing are Daryl's house, those windmills around Vesta's farm, Harvest Sprite Tree, Goddess Pond (I figured I could just make a circular pond using water autotile), Turtle Lake (Same as Goddess Pond), Waterfall, Mansion (will be a seperate tileset), Beach (will be a seperae tileset), and other little items that have no real importance.
The next thing on my to do list is start ripping the interiors, then once THAT is out of the way, I will start work on the NPC's!
And I think that I should let you all know that HM:RV takes place in an entirely different universe from the regular Harvest Moon's, which means you shouldn't be surprised when people of no actual relation are siblings or something in my game. ^^
The reason for this is because while I have the main bachelors and bachelorette's of Mineral Town, I don't have their families graphics, and if I used the GBA Mineral Town graphics, they would clash with the more colorful HM:DS graphics. Soo, yeah just wanted to let you all know that.
About the Heart Events, I haven't finished them yet, as I've got exams in 3 days, so I've been studying. When the exams are done (next Friday) I'll do LOT'S of work to catch up.
So, If you don't mind I'll map too. When the exams are over, I practically have nothing to do, so I'll be able to fit both in.
In that case I'll shamelessly advertise my own project here *evil laugh*
It's just some images to show you I've done it too... :smile:
Wasn't so easy, though. These are my first scripts if you don't count one unfinished custom menu.
It's great that you're creating this project as it makes me try harder too.
Since you made this topic I did more on my game than the whole year before.

Wow. That is really all I can say. It looks very impressive.
But I see you're using the female character sprite, does that mean that this game is going to be for girls only? Also, how exactly did you go about doing the tool animations?
I thought about putting them as charsets, then I thought about making them battle animations, then I decided to just screw it for now and went on making other things.
@cadz
I'd be glad if you helped map! I started mapping some of the town myself, but its still a long ways from being done. Also, bout the events, I don't mind waiting longer. I still have to finish the "behind the scenes" scripts myself.
Well, I'm a girl, so I just started with girl character. I might add the boy someday, but not yet.
The animations are done by battle animations, I don't think it would be possible using charsets, because of the different size.
Here's an example:
All you have to do is play the animation, change the player's graphic to invisible and wait 15 frames before changing it back. I did it by calling a common event - waiting by script didn't work well.
In that case I'll shamelessly advertise my own project here *evil laugh*

Ahhh! That's what I thought! Thanks, that just gave me a great idea! :thumb:
@nahachito
Lol, you can make a HM:VX with the exact same story if you want. Story isn't really the important thing in Harvest Moon anyway, its about interacting with everyting around you and watching it change.
Aw, I loved Harvest Moon I played both the SNES-version on emulator, and the GBA-girl version. I hope you're able to finish this because I'll totally play!
I've been doing alot of scripting for the past couple of weeks and FINALLY alot of my efforts are starting to show.
I just finished the time system, meaning that weather and tints are fully functional. Also, when it rains, it auto-matically waters your tilled land for you.
I would guess that the "growth" system is done. I still haven't added regrowable seeds, but it shouldn't be too hard. The only thing left to do is debug it.
When a seed is fully grown and you press the action key on it, the item isn't immediately sent into your rucksack. Its first placed in something I call "holding" where you hold the item over your head. You can then push "D" to put the item in your rucksack, "Enter" to throw it away, but if an NPC is in front of you, give them the item.
Also, I added dash... but it wasn't very hard so I don't think it deserves a screenshot. Right now, I'm working on when you press a certain button, you can change tools without opening the menu, and also whn you press a different button, you can get items out of your rucksack without having to open the menu.
I still need to code the rest of the tools (hammer, axe, sickle, and fishing pole) and some day I will have to have it so tools can level up, but that wont be for a while.
I'm not sure exactly what I missed... but if I remember I'll update this post.
I am really big fan of harvest moon, although I only played the PSX version but it sure did take me to year 4 of harvest moon. I remember my attempt to remake this game, with whole new features, I was basically aiming to make a very unique and modern type harvest moon, at the same keeping the concept and fun. It was turning out great and
the devolopment was fast, but I all the files due to some reformatting error or something
I can give you ideas and some new features to make it more unique, I still have my notebook where I keep all the information, inspirations and development, from story to characters and personal traits, actions until to new features, well you get the point. I'm not really busy right now but I'm doing some work for my game too, so let's just say a part time helper. If you're interested, just PM me.
