Halo 3

Halo's fine and dandy in its own way, but Treg's got the right idea: Valve's Orange Box.

FIVE sweet games for the same price as Halo 3. You want epic, genre-defining single player? Half Life 2 and HL2 Episodes One and Two. You want unbeatable multiplayer, complete with nine separate character classes? Team Fortress 2. You want brain bending physics-based puzzles? Portal.

Its got it all, and its got it all good.

I loved the Half Life Series more than Halo, sure Halo was one of the first great FPS's for the consoles, it defined them for consoles. But there are much better ones in the future. Gears of War 2 will overshadow it again, like it did with the first. As well fuck, I've been anticipating Unreal Tournament 3 Longer than Halo 3.... hmm I might go play that, i'm bored enough to :P

Gotta get the Insta-Gib in there somewhere!

Clearly you never played Goldeneye. Console exclusive.

Doom and Wolfenstein were PC games, but also released on consoles way before Halo.

There's a difference between goldeneye and doom and wolfenstein. You've gotta think, what PC game is halo most like? Unreal Tournament's what I'm getting, and Halo was the first console game to capture that sort of gameplay. Which as it apparently turns out was something the casual gaming crowd needed to get into FPS games.

There's no doubt goldeneye, doom, and wolfenstein are awesome, but none of them were as popular on console as their PC counter-parts (or goldeneye, which just didn't rake in the awesome numbers like halo does now-a-days, probably attributed to consoles being more widespread now, but that's just how the cookie rolls. Yeah. A cookie)

Very true! But he said that it was one of the first great FPS games for consoles, and I pointed out that Goldeneye, Doom, and Wolfenstein all came out on consoles and they are indeed great. He also said Halo defined them for consoles in general, but I think Goldeneye defined it if we're talking console exclusives and that Wolfenstein+Doom defined it if we're talkin just "an FPS with defines the genre that came out on X platform". Just because Halo sold better doesn't mean the others weren't first or that they weren't great, nor does it mean that the others didn't define the genre IMO. The genre-defining can be disputed all day since it's vague and can mean a number of things, but there were certainly plenty of great FPS games on consoles before Halo came along. Using sales figures can lead to a bit of a slippery slope, because as you said, nowadays the records are always increasing like crazy, so any benchmark will be beaten and "great" will always be changing. But yes, based on your specific criteria of that particular type of FPS, you're right.
