Forum updates

I've just made some improvements to the forums including:

• Linktree at the top now flat, looks cleaner and more integrated with the forum skin
• Script errors in IE when viewing threads fixed
• Print/send this topic/mark unread links now take up one line in IE, as they always have in Firefox
• Forum no longer cuts off at the end for guests when viewing threads.
• Also, the www. is no longer required for the forums. You can now login to the forums from any of the following addresses, and it will keep you at that url now!

http://rmvx.org/, http://www.rmvx.org/, http://rmxp.org/, http://www.rmxp.org/, http://rmxp.slacked.org/

Update: Additionally, you might have noticed that "Forum Games" is now closed for new posts. A new board will be replacing it (we will announce later) and the archive of the discontinued forum games will live inside that board as a read-only subforum. We're also trialing Google ads, but you probably noticed that already.

I never even knew about rmxp.slacked.org
keep up the good work, and the announcements that inform me of the efforts (such as that IE wasn't fully working and such).

See why your my fav admin?

Get rid of Google-Ads, even if it is getting y'all money. Such a disgusting use of space, why not have users pay for Project-related advertisements instead (i.e. Pay $20/m and be in our banner)? Hundreds of users access RMXP.ORG usually by googling rpg maker xp. It could mean money for slacked/TREG/.org + hits for advertisers.

Awesome Bro

Well because that's not a sure way to make money. I can guarantee that members paying a monthly fee for advertising would see one month through then stop. Why would they advertise if they can have it in their sigs / other people's sigs, their own project topic for free.

It's one of those ideas that's like "HAI GOODJ IDE\AH!" at first, then a few months down the line it's like "um ... *cough*". I've seen it happen way to often in this community, things like that just never seem to take off.

No offense to your suggestion, it just never seems to work D:

We're actually going to have a "sponsored content" or something similar on the main page actually, we've been planning it for a while.

Why not just make the Google ads be a thing for everyone below Sponsor? If they gave you money, they shouldn't see the ads. Another incentive for people to become a Sponsor.

If they were in the middle of the forum or somewhere else annoying, that'd make sense (have you seen Smashboards? Its nearly impossible to browse because there are ads between posts and stuff). Being in the top corner isn't really getting in anybody's way.

What about obtrusive ads for non-registered people? like sponges

If they don't want to register, they'll leave. Yay, bandwidth.

I think that putting more ads for non-registered visitors is a good idea, but I don't thik it would be a good ida to make them too excessive. Maybe add another set of ads justabove the link tree or just below it. Putting too many ads would turn some people away from even looking at the site, let alone considering registering. I don't think .org is in the business of trying to avoid members, unless I'm mistaken. Just trying to get them to actually register instead of just viewing, right?

If we add more ads for guests just do me the favor and slap in that the ad count drops in that little hello guest/register message.  And really unless you go ad crazy I don't see why anyone would register just to avoid an extra ad or two.

Aren't resources and scripts blocked to guests anyway?
I thought that was our big attempt to get people to register.

I say put them on! Most of us use Firefox and can just use Adblock to get rid of them if they annoy us. It's usually those who don't know how to do that that are the ones who click the "Alert! You have 1 new message waiting! Click here!" ... "Oh-shi-old guy porn!"

I like that the script issue was fixed in IE. If I'm in a hurry and don't want to wait for FF to load I usually open the dreaded IE7 and now I can easily check a project topic or whatever easily without getting "WARNING SCRIPT ERROR DUE TO MICROSOFTS CRAP BROWSER"  :thumb:
