i'm going to copypaste a post i made on gw without context (it has to do with vstis)
for piano i'd recommend either
The Grand or
Ivory, they're both really good (though Ivory is pretty huge). i personally use
4Front TruePianos when i need a piano since i don't like having to deal with dongles. it's not quite as good but it's not really bad by any means.
i threw this together with the demo a few months ago (the full version has like three piano models to choose from that probably have higher quality). it's not the BEST EXAMPLE (i drew all the notes and velocity by hand since i don't have a working midi controller) but if you have a midi controller it'd probably be a lot better. also it's pretty small/cheap.
i'm not sure of many vstis that capture asian instruments beside
Kong Audio's stuff and
EWQL RA. i haven't really USED any of Kong's stuff besides MiniErhu which was pretty ace but a bit lacking; i'm sure their commercial offerings are a lot better though. RA's probably pretty tight stuff though since EWQL is pretty much a household name for film composers and shit.
mechanical drums i can't really help with. my suggestion would be to raid
freesound or something for samples of machines banging and chop them up yourself. alternatively, record a washing machine or you banging on pots and pans or something. as a standard acoustic kit i generally use
ns_kit7 (now NDK). most people would recommend like BATTERY or stylus rmx or some shit but ns_kit is really really good (and cheap - it was like $100 when i got it, though it seems the buyout bumped it up to $130 (still really fucking good for the content though)).
i made this using it (and ewqlsog and gforce m-tron and some organ) last year and there's some demos on the NDK site itself.
for ambient pads and stuff i'd recommend
Absynth and
Massive, though those are pretty common recommendations.
z3ta+'s really nice too; i haven't gotten a chance to play around with it much but it's rad. if you want kindof distorted, dirty-sounding ORGANIC pads i'd go for
schwa Olga. it's not specifically DESIGNED for pads but you can get some really nice ones out of it (i use it a lot it's my favorite synth right now). i don't have any olga demos on hand but i can throw one together later probably.
NOISE is a fun one. as far as vstis go i use ABvst and Sophia from
audiobulb. they're both really fucking weird and unique and really flexible provided you don't try to get a real MELODY out of them - they're entirely designed for ambient noises and textures.
i made this using ABvst exclusively except for the voice samples at the end. for field recordings and stuff like that i'd again recommend hitting freesound.
