i'm going to copypaste a post i made on gw without context (it has to do with vstis)

for piano i'd recommend either The Grand or Ivory, they're both really good (though Ivory is pretty huge). i personally use 4Front TruePianos when i need a piano since i don't like having to deal with dongles. it's not quite as good but it's not really bad by any means. i threw this together with the demo a few months ago (the full version has like three piano models to choose from that probably have higher quality). it's not the BEST EXAMPLE (i drew all the notes and velocity by hand since i don't have a working midi controller) but if you have a midi controller it'd probably be a lot better. also it's pretty small/cheap.

i'm not sure of many vstis that capture asian instruments beside Kong Audio's stuff and EWQL RA. i haven't really USED any of Kong's stuff besides MiniErhu which was pretty ace but a bit lacking; i'm sure their commercial offerings are a lot better though. RA's probably pretty tight stuff though since EWQL is pretty much a household name for film composers and shit.

mechanical drums i can't really help with. my suggestion would be to raid freesound or something for samples of machines banging and chop them up yourself. alternatively, record a washing machine or you banging on pots and pans or something. as a standard acoustic kit i generally use ns_kit7 (now NDK). most people would recommend like BATTERY or stylus rmx or some shit but ns_kit is really really good (and cheap - it was like $100 when i got it, though it seems the buyout bumped it up to $130 (still really fucking good for the content though)). i made this using it (and ewqlsog and gforce m-tron and some organ) last year and there's some demos on the NDK site itself.

for ambient pads and stuff i'd recommend Absynth and Massive, though those are pretty common recommendations. z3ta+'s really nice too; i haven't gotten a chance to play around with it much but it's rad. if you want kindof distorted, dirty-sounding ORGANIC pads i'd go for schwa Olga. it's not specifically DESIGNED for pads but you can get some really nice ones out of it (i use it a lot it's my favorite synth right now). i don't have any olga demos on hand but i can throw one together later probably.

NOISE is a fun one. as far as vstis go i use ABvst and Sophia from audiobulb. they're both really fucking weird and unique and really flexible provided you don't try to get a real MELODY out of them - they're entirely designed for ambient noises and textures. i made this using ABvst exclusively except for the voice samples at the end. for field recordings and stuff like that i'd again recommend hitting freesound.

If you're going to be working with drums, I really like the interface of DR-008.  It comes with variety of samples, but my favorite thing about it is that using your own samples is very easy.  You can insert samples from anywhere (other DXI/VST banks, rips off of hardware or random places as Teloch mentioned) into a nicely organized grid.  I usually set the grid to correspond with sheet music (for example, you could have a disco scratch on Eb5, and a snare drum on C2).  I was able to create some fun organic music this way by making a kit entirely based off of noises I generated in the studio.  Another plus is that it doesn't drain your CPU nearly as much as some of the other programs out there (perhaps this is because it's a tad older... it was bundled with Sonar 2).  But I find it very functional; I've since upgraded to Sonar 6 and I still use it... I think it's only about $100 and it's a very easy download.

For atmo stuff get cygnus. Its free and brilliant, I use it alot.

Just google free vsti's, there are loads out there that are brilliant.

Fruity Loops was a good start for me when I was starting to program stuff. Its been a while since I used it, but I would recommend if you want to try it, check out Ableton Live 7. It has a lot more power when it comes to creating things and sampling, and can be easy to use if you dedicate yourself to playing around with it. Of course it costs a lot of money for the program (I paid a good 300 with my student discount, but again, its well paid for something that gives you power and an effects processing range that makes your music stand out apart from the rest.)

I use a lot of Native Instruments VSTs for Ableton, and Reason 4 as well. Its not as easy as Fruity Loops, but like I said, if you put some time and effort into it, you'll know how to use it and will find it much easier than FL Studio.

Ill have to disagree on FL's lack of power..... maybe you didn't take enough time to look out what it can do .... I'm a professionnal sound engineer, and i use FL for all my sequencing needs. All it needs is a little pack of vsts (LMAO i got like 4 TBs of samples but hey :D) and it can do anything. Ableton Live's primary function is to be able to play your vsts live via midi instuments and it's interface confuses me like hell and Reason is, well too much about proprietary stuff for my own tastes...

Bottom line, it's about personal tastes and being confortable with a DAW. I'd try as many as i can until i find one that fits my mindframe (in my case it was FL xxl)....
