Final Fantasy Tactics: War of Lions

I'll try not to make this long winded so I'll quickly explain the good and the bad.

GOOD
-The translation is BEAUTIFUL. Almost every line of dialog is different from the original yet it's been rewritten to actually make sense. In fact, the new translation actually expands on characters more than it did with the original; Argath (once Algus) speaks with a lisp and he's more of an arrogant 2nd class priss moreso than he was in the first game which made him come off as a scheming noble. Delita seems more cold and distant yet at the same time he's on the border of near insanity as he often talks to himself. They made Gaffgarion more of an A-hole than he originally was and Agrias is a lot less uptight. Miluda's actual goal is represented more clear and Wiegraf's hatred over the nobles is filled with a lot more vice.

Overall, the game's story has been heightened three fold. There are no good guys in this game; everyone is just looking out for themselves amidst a dirty war which is a breath of fresh air from SAVING TEH WOLRD!1 Delita is still one of my favorite Final Fantasy villains and all the side characters that Tactics threw at you are much more enjoyable and memorable including Rafa and Malak who don't SUCK so much this time around.

-The game is harder. They dropped the EASY MODE crap from the english release and made all the job classes have their original Japanese jp score. There are new classes like the Death Knight (Gaffgarion is classified as Fell Knight to differentiate himself from everyone else), Onion Knight (yay FF3j reference) and there are also a small handful of new crossover characters like Luso from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 (which isn't even out yet) and Balthier from Final Fantasy 12. Cloud is still here...

-The new job qualifications (which are actually the old Japanese quals) are much more strict, but given the difficulty leveling up or taking side jobs is much more prevelant than it once was. Velius is still ridiculously difficult.

-There are new CG cinemas... but they're not all flash like the standard Square cinematics. Instead, they use a cel-shaded hand painted look that makes the scenes look like they're animated renaissance paintings. It's a really neat effect and there are quite a lot of cinemas for major story points so it's not like a cheap gimmick. There is voice acting in the cinemas, and Square picked mighty fine voice actors to fit the role. The textures are now hi-res and anti-aliased. All other graphics are the same.

-The music has been remixed with an actual orchestra. You can hear instruments and such now which is a welcome addition.

-There are smaller yet welcome changes such as the SLOW AS HECK text during the prologue and chapter 1 has been fixed to run at normal speed.

THE BAD

-The game has some slowdown... which I don't understand. It's nowhere near as bad as the Japanese version but it's baffling. There's very little loading times in the game (about 1-2 seconds between scenes), the game runs FASTER than the ps1 version, but whenever you use a special skill that causes the screen to darken (like Gaffgarion's dark sword or Agrias' Judgement Sword) the game stutters for about 1-2 seconds. It's nothing game breaking and I don't notice it as much, but it is annoying and strange when the rest of the game is flawless.

-The sound effects were emulated... poorly. Rather than remix the sound effects like they did the music, Square simply ported them over. While they aren't terrible, some sound effects like the dying "scream" and item "confirmation" sound louder and more distorted than they should be.

My Opinion

If you missed Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1, then get this. If you loved Final Fantasy 12, then get this. If you want one of Square's most professional, dark, and realistic stories then by all means get this. FFT had one of my favorite video game tales ever and now that it's been remade, I had more fun playing through it a second time then I did the first. The odd slowdown and distorted sound effects are minor annoyances in an otherwise fantastic package.

And I hear Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 more than makes up for FFTA's embarassment.

I wouldnt really consider delita as villan

I started to replay on the PSP with the emulated FFT heck ive droped it for the port beacuse the port is better although i still have the old reflex buttons of playing the emulated one

Wow, I'm seriously considering buying a PSP just for this game, although there were a few others that almost had be convinced. The cel-shaded scenes look amazing. From what I saw of the voices though...ouch. Not so good. Whatever though. Agrias is looking QUITE sexy.

I just call him a villain because he's one of the main opposing forces to the hero. Like I said earlier, there really aren't any good guys or bad guys in the game (except for the zodiac beasts) which is FFT's biggest appeal. Everyone is out to survive and there's not a single character, except maybe Olan, who's doing what they do for anything but selfish reasons.

Also, villain and antagonist are two different things. Delita was a hero, yes, but you can't deny that he was evil. He killed people, he manipulated countries, and used his friends to gain power. He was a hero, yes, but being a hero doesn't necessarily mean you're good. Any greek and roman myth will teach you that.

Does the pre-ending actually make any sense now?

From what I remember, you died or something and went to the underworld. Then you fought some weird chick on a ruined boat

I haven't gotten that far yet but the boat thing made sense before. You didn't die, you just (literally) descended into hell. They explained Altima, Ramza's sister, and everything about the church and why it was related.

You only "died" because of the spell that was casted at the end of the battle which blew everything up.

Anyways, I'm really excited because the after-the-credits ending made absolutely no sense:

When Delita kills Ovelia and says "Ramza... WHAT DID YOU HAVE THAT..."

So the new translation will hopefully shed some light on that strange occurence.

I played the old FFT but not too much. Can't remember why.

The last FF I genuinely liked was Final Fantasy 6 and I was a casual fan of Final Fantasy 8 (It's like watching The O.C. - amusing, from a detached perspective but whatever, it's funny/ fun sometimes)

Should I buy this? How's the multiplayer mode?

If there's a full fledged competitive multiplayer mode then I am so buying this tomorrow.

I'm a big fan of FFT, and I'm glad to see some actual discussion here, and no ranting about it.

I know nothing about japanese, so I had to stick to the english version. I did hear that the translation sucked anyways.

Still, it didn't take the excitment off the game. Final Fantasy Tactics showed itself to be a jump from a cute white mage being saved by a knight. But the translation really softened the game and made it look like it.

On the characters side, their personalities were indeed defined, just not so strongly as one would wanted. For instance Ramza was a kiddo with no actual personality that could make a troop to take part of the War's plot.

You can slightly see some pieces of how they're supossed to be, like Orlandu's scene with the Zodiac Stone, Dycedarg's and Gafgarion chat before the battle at Lionel Castle and many others.

I think that what they will try to do is, to take adavntage of those situations that showed more personality and made them last for the whole game.

FFT, was rushed out, but now it has been planned, and it will recover it rightful place as Game's King. It's the most expected game release of the last years to all of Square's fans who played FFT, FFTA (even if it sucked) and hoped for a remake (like I did)

I know some people will disagree, but I wonder how cool Cloud will be on this version?!

Damn I've never played FFT but I've always wanted to. Why did I have to get a DS instead of a PSP...

Now's a good time to get a PSP, especially since the new model came out and it is so much better than the old one.

i got one word for this game.. fucking blurry. My god, i seriously can't get over the fact that this game looks like it's perpetually out of focus...
the 8 inch black & white tv in my attic has a sharper image than this game.

edit.. btw, the new psp is the same damn thing as the old one with less battery life, and a tv output.

Hey Cruelty, it's a good idea to know what you're talking about before, you know, actually talking.

Final Fantasy Tactics ps1 version at standard tv resolution:

PSP version at it's native resolution.

Notice how the textures are sharpened? They call that anti-aliasing. The game also refreshes the screen at a higher rate than normal PSP games meaning there's no motion blur or screen tearing.

Also, the PSP slim has a higher "safe" processor clock speed, twice the ram, the speakers have a higher decibel rating, the disc tray doesn't stick or refuse to close anymore, and it partitions the data onto the ram so the loading times are cut in half. Also, the battery is the exact same as the original but lasts longer because the slim itself uses half the power of the original.

YOU FAIL! TRY AGAIN!

Is there something wrong with your eyes or something? Also, judging from your post before Marcus's schooling, you probably have not even played the new game.

One thing that actually bothered me about this game is the AI.
I don't know about the English version, since I played the Japanese version (going to get the English one though, FFT love forever XDDD), but from what I see, guest!Delita's AI makes me sick. T_T

Try wiping the screen off... and don't use your fingers when you do it.

I think the guest AI has actually improved over the ps1 version. They try their best to perserve their own lives and the lives of any friendlies near them. I try to keep the guests alive as long as possible because they make good fodder or draw potentially dangerous enemies away.

A good tip, try to teach everyone the squire ability focus and teach Ramza tailwind as soon as possible. There are a lot of battles that are difficult if you attack headfirst so you'll be doing a lot of waiting to build your CT up. Tailwind increases your speed and focus increases your strength; for every turn you don't do anything, use a squire ability. Not only will your jp shoot up for those turns you sit around, but you'll be super beefy when the enemy reaches you.

I remember dying about 30 times trying to fight Velius until I gave everyone squire abilities. Ramza ended up having 20 something speed and acted 4 times before any other character.
