E3: New PS3 Model and a Price Drop!

60gb stocks are being predicted, worldwide, to last only until the end of next month by the SCEE president, that's a pretty big reason to believe it's true.

"Nevertheless, Kaz Hirai himself says the one SKU strategy is the plan. He told Scandinavian website VGTV, "[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the US, we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two. We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the $600 SKU."

Whut?

The question isn't really whether or not they are still making them. The thing that was flying around was that the price drop was only in affect until the end of June, because then they would all be gone.

However, what the rep is saying is that there are plenty of the 60GB left. There could be 5 million of them sitting around globally, and that could last quite a while.

This is in addition to the fact that, for all we know, the 80GB could go down to $499 in October or November, and everything is peachy. This seems especially likely to me because the 80GB hardrive is actually cheaper than the 60, and the system itself doesn't have the EE which makes it overall cheaper than the 60GB model

We don't really know anything yet. Dave Karraker is also denying it. Dunno why Dave Karraker and Kaz and europe guy don't seem to have it straight, but imagine we will know before long.

So yeah, that price drop on the PS3s was a load of crock for the US then, wasn't it? Since we're still stuck paying $600 for the low (and high?) end PS3. Great.

I don't trust either of them, to be completely honest.

But it hardly matters, it's still too expensive. I wouldn't buy the low end model for $500 a couple months ago, and that hasn't changed.

This took a long time to read, and I am thusly disappointed in all of you. Though I felt like throwing a couple things out there: (Note that I've owned a 360, had it for about 6 months, it got stolen, then I bought a PS3 [like two weeks before a bloody price drop :<], so I do have experience with both)

A. I actually prefer using the AA battery packs on the 360, I have rechargeable batteries as well, and they run out of batteries... Oh I'd say like 30-ish hours (estimate), whereas using incredibly cheap Target batteries (I bought 36 of them for $8), they lasted I'd say about twice as long, it's hard to make a good guess because they lasted so damn long.

B. The PS3 controllers come with rechargeable batteries, I own two of them, and they both run down to like 20% power in about 6 hours. The cord to recharge them isn't very long. Now, the high point of these controllers... I really like how the playstation controllers have been shaped all along, it's comfortable, and it's familiar. The recharging cord works with a computer, and it also works with a PSP, and some other things, like my mp3 player, though I kind of can't find that any more and think it got stolen...

C. The playstation online is free, but unorganized and ugly. The Xbox Live marketplace is very well organized, easy to find what you're looking for or new things, and it's put together pretty well, while the PSN download page is... A hassle to get through, where you get to look at 4 things, and shuffle through pages in a clumsy system. I'd prefer it free regardless of this, but $50 for a year isn't bad. I've yet to play a PS3 game online though, so I dunno if it's just super laggy or any huge problems.

D. Holy shit I didn't know the PS3 worked wirelessly out of the box. But then again, I hate all things wireless so I think I'll just keep that ethrenet cord plugged right in, as I find the wireless cuts out quite randomly!

Now, you see, that's weird. My 360 controller (only one) doesn't last long (the play and charge kit gives me a good 10), but my SIXAXIS... The one I use mostly lasts me, easy, 30 hours on a charge, and the other one, which is only used for multiplayer (RAMPART!), has never had to be recharged.

I haven't noticed that the PSN is disorganized... I mean, videos are under videos, demos are under Games>Demos, so on and so forth. I mean, you can't sort by genre, but I never use that on XBL anyway. Also, the playstation store looks a lot better on a HDTV. I mean, literally, it has a different design. I didn't like the low def store, either, but I have no gripes about the high def one (it takes a while to load when you move to a new section, but items display their information instantly as a trade-off, as opposed to XBL which loads fast at first, but then you have to wait for the individual items to load).

The only time I ever saw lag in the PSN was on a particularly heated game of Rampage, but then my connection went out, and it may have been my internet.

To be fair, I don't usually have lag with XBL, maybe a spot here or there on Gears, but Crackdown, on the other hand, lags like a bitch.

EDIT:

As far as I know, the following is the latest statement from SCEA.
The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.

Hm I dunno, I didn't realize they'd have a different layout for a high def? I play on an old CRT screen that I've had since... Well actually since I was 5. It's pretty old, but man was it really nice for back then!

Also @arc, that's pretty weird, both of mine have terrible battery life, but I don't care all too much, it's not the end of the world that I have to plug it in every day, since I can just alternate controllers if I need to.

Anyways, I've thought up more things.

E. Emulation of old systems isn't spot-free on either Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. Considering I had all my games for the PS2 stolen, and thus far I've only bought Star Ocean 3 back, I've had a 100% fuckup rate for the PS3's PS2 emulation. It loads quicker, it looks fine, and doesn't stutter or anything... But the game freezes in random load screens, and you can't fix it. I tried turning the upscaler off, turning it on, and it all still had that problem. But that's just one game. The Xbox 360 WORKS with a lot of Xbox games, just not... All of them. Like Guilty Gear XX#reload doesn't work on a 360... yeah you've heard this one. As far as I know PS1 emulation on the ps3 is super though, I've only tried FFT but it worked just fine.

F. PS3 doesn't come with hi-def cables... Which is kind of annoying, but it's only like $15 to go out and buy some. Unless it's 2am in the morning and you go to wal-mart, in which case you're left with only getting a $40 hdmi cable. Assholes. Oh and the 360 has that switch on there, which bugs me, it'd be nice if I didn't have to flip that thing either way all the time.

G. I am kind of angry the cheaper PS3's magically disappear, since the only notable difference in them (to me) was the difference in hard drive size, which is completely irrelevant to me, since you can just throw in your own SATA hard drive whenever you want, and save some money.

Star Ocean 3 was actually one of the games I tested on the PS3, and I don't remember any problems... Actually, I'm not aware of any PS2 game at all not working, but I haven't really looked into it too much.

And I don't mind having to plug in, because I can keep playing while plugged in.

I'm relatively sure it wasn't my disc, I bought a new copy (greatest hits version) the same day I tried it in my PS3, and just every now and then (seemed pretty random) whenever it needed to load something, it would just stick in the black screen, I could use the menu button on the controller and quit the game, but I could not for the life of me get it to go, and I could reliably get the freeze to happen.

I don't really mind as I still have my ps2 though!

EDIT: my only gripe with plugging the controller in is how short that cord is. I have to sit like within 3 feet of the TV to charge and play. :<

I wonder if you got an older model, Andy (you know, even if you get it brand new just now, it could still be one from months ago. You know they were still sitting there for ages... heh, heh...) and it could possibly be one of the ones that the emulating was still not top notch. I dunno. Just a thought. But so far, mine works perfectly. I know it was something they were working on though.

The 360 has really crappy emulation from what i've seen... games like Knights of the Old Republic stagger and lag like HELL. My friend got sick of it and just went out and bought them again for the PC.

The life of my controllers also seems to last a long time. We will be playing it all day and it will only go down one notch. But since i am always on the computer or something, I can have it plugged in when i'm not playing and it'll be charging. This is my new strategy since i learned of being able to plug it into the comp... works great! I should probably get another one sometime so i can alternate between the two.

But I'll admit, the PS3 can be buggy. At random times Oblivion will lag like HELL then go back to normal, and then lag like HELL again... god, i almost wanted to cry with how horrible the lagging was at times... but that only happens once in a while; but still something I dont think should happen.

My complaint when it comes to the PS3's online capabilities is how SLOW it is to download files! I mean, my friend will download something on his 360 that is over a gig and it'll be done in 15-30 minutes. While i download something that is 200mb and have to wait an hour... And i am even using a direct plug in to my comcast service (since i tend to not get the best connection from my room with wifi...).

Yeah, the cable is insanely short. I have my PS3 hooked up in the living room on our 50 inch screen and if I want to charge and play, that means sitting practically in the screen. Not good if a member of your family walks past :p

I think here in the UK the ps2 emulation is a lot worse as they removed the emotion chip and then decided to charge us more :D

It doesn't bother me because it gets better with each firmware update instead but it means I can't play non huge selling games like, Atelier Iris 1/2 or Steambot Chronicles.

My controllers seem to last a lot longer on the PS3 than on the 360 by a good 10-15 hours and they are a lot lighter and more comfortable to hold.

Me and a few friends had a gaming marathon at my house the other day, I'm the only one out of the 6 of us who owned both a ps3 and 360 (the rest just had wii or ps2) and after we were done, 5 of them were completely sold on the PS3, I felt like a damn sony rep :/

I got it three bloody weeks ago, and I got it from a mainstream retailer, I'm relatively sure it's not a fucked up launch model. So both the system and the game were incredibly new, I'm really, really doubtful that it's some minute flaw. Try throwing star ocean 3 in there, play it for 4 hours straight, and if it works fine for you, then I'd be inclined to believe there's something wrong with mine :<

Not to mention, it's one game, it's to be expected the emulation isn't perfect.

Oh also I have to say the remake of Ninja Gaiden is disappointing. I mean honestly, the first two levels of the game are incredibly beautiful, leaves falling from the trees, the trees and cliff walls all look lovely, and they even added a new section of the level where you get to have a go at Doku early in the game (and probably get your ass kicked). But after those two levels, the graphics are updated with character models and textures, the terrain is completely unchanged, things are blocky, they still use the old cut scenes (which look distinctly... Wrong, and I don't even have an HD screen)... The graphics definitely don't look 'next-gen' past the second level in Ninja Gaiden Sigma :< Oh but I did enjoy the couple new monsters and getting to play as Rachel and fight Gamov [even if he is cheap as fuck]. What I didn't enjoy was that they added in a second fight against that fat man, I hate that prick.

Hmm, I hadn't read that before Ninja Gaiden.

Oh, and for the record, I have a launch PS3, so I don't think Andy's problem has anything to do with how old his console is.

The only problem I have with the PS3, and I'm certain this is my individual unit, is that literally 9/10, running games with the upscaler turned on causes audio corruption. I'm really thinking about calling customer support. Basically, I have to go back forth in and out of a PS2 game until the audio isn't messed up. Honestly, it's a minor problem, but it's a problem nonetheless, and one that doesn't seem to affect anyone but me.

PSN downloads are pretty slow, but I usually queue up a handful of downloads (if I'm looking for em) and just let it Fold.At.Home and download while I'm at work.

Oblivion lags for you, Zan? My single problem with the framerate in oblivion (which is better on PS3 than on the 360, btw) is that sometimes when I jump off a cliff into a large group of NPC, which basically means I approach them from over a clipping plane really fast, the game gets slightly choppy. There was also this one spot when you infiltrate that one cult to try to get that one book from that one guy (that's not a spoiler the way I said it, right?) like 7 guys started casting spells on me at once, and the game turned into a slideshow for a while. However, it was also a hot day, and I don't have my PS3 set up in the best ventilated place in our house.

I had totally forgotten about Tony Hawk Project 8! The PS3 version of it is notoriously sucky, as you may have heard. Mine is buggy! If I'm trying to play splitscreen multiplayer, the game freezes if you try to load a skater from the harddrive. Every single time. We have to play with the default skaters. Is it a game-breaking problem? I guess not, but we really wanted to have our "Satan Vs. The Dirty Scotsman" skate fight. That's one game I'm considering trading in and getting the 360 version of.

Oh, and Super Stardust + flOw + Lemmings HD are enough for me to pay $50 a year, regardless of other issues.

Hmm... well, i guess I'll just have to try Star Ocean 3 then, haha. I am curious because I havent run into that problem. I never did finish it... I wonder if I can get myself to sit down and play it with how excited i am with Oblivion...

I've only run into this lag problem once in a while. And it seemed to be when there was a huge area with a lot of dead people/things. One of the Daetric shrines, the 'superstition(sp)' one, you know what comes falling from the sky in abundance right? That slowed it down. Another Daetric shrine sent me to oblivion to find five souls, and since there were monsters EVERYWHERE, and i killed almost all of them, it would lag like hell, then clear up, and then go back to lag before i even got much further... terrible. But still, I never enjoyed Oblivion as much as i do on the PS3. I never played it for the PC, but I enjoy it over the 360 version. I really hate having to stop playing, haha...

The PSN just needs one thing; more and bigger updates. I swear, XBL had more new stuff added based on E3 than PSN. Though, i am finally truely seeing a difference here. When PSN says 'HD' it MEANS HD. My friend downloaded a bunch of stuff off of XBL that said "HD". Yeah... they looked like CRAP. I couldnt believe THAT is what they called HD! Might be because I am used to blueray now...

@Camisado: Yeah, I guess the cord can be pretty short... I have a 42' LCD, so i can still be pretty close to it. But i am in a convient spot as I am in a corner at my computer desk that is next to my TV... but they really should have made a longer cord for the average person or something.
