Does Gender(and sexual pref.) Really Affect Music You Listen To?

Nphyx said:
I prefer complexity and authenticity.  Pop music, for the most part, sounds like plastic to me.  Bland, soulless, and manufactured.  Of course you can see this in any genre, but pop is 99% assembly line nonsense - half the time the lyrics aren't even cohesive, but rather random phrases jumbled together to evoke some sort of base response (see N'Sync, uuuugh, just random collections of romantic sounding phrases to a beat).  Country music is another especially big culprit, as well as rap-rock and quite a bit of "gangsta" rap (quotes because half these guys talk completely out of their ass, some of them are cool).

Amen to that.

I'm male, hetero (so far :P) and 16. I am a huge Pink Floyd fan, and I like the bands Big Audio Dynamite, Supertramp, Dire Straits. I like a bit of alternative/indie stuff like Fionn Regan, Death Cab for Cutie, Joanna Newsome and Mogwai.

I'm a sucker for a bit of odd music, but I like music that has style. Not the manufactured bs that comes from the regulars of Rap, Pop and ainstream Rock and Indie. Not my taste.

I know Venetia is a fan of Pink Floyd, and we couldn't be more different people. So I guess, music is what people like. Certain music these days may be targeted at certain people eg. Britney Spears was targeted at preteen/teenage girls  back in the day. But people like whatever music they choose.

I listen to dance, electronica. Shamelessly and beautifully soulless. Except Ibiza and techno/trance dance music, which just sucks.

Metal/rock is artless monkey poo that is infinitely more shallow than it tries to be. Jazz is endlessly boring, but it's still better than country. Rap is an unintentional hyperbole all throughout its uneducated existence. Any artist that avoid these genres is probably listenable. <3

Gender: Male
Preference: Alternative-Rock, Indie Rock, Punk-Pop
Opinion: Well, sometimes it's peer that controls what music you listen to. If friends nudge you to listen to something and it's ok for your taste, you might start listening to it, and you might start listening to a lot of other stuff that are "your gender". But I don't think it actually makes any difference. I have lady friends that listen to classic rock, and lady friends that listen to Cobra Starship and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, like I do.

Gender: Female, 13

Preference: Classical, Instrumental, Jazz, J-rock, J-pop, Ballade.

Opinion: Well, I don't really think that the gender affects a persons music preference. A thing that may change ones preference is the pressure. Many people in school changes their self just to fit it.
But no, gender should nor affect ones music preference.

Why: I love the beautiful sound of an big orchestra. I love the sound of an solo piano... I love calm things. Sometimes with the inspiration from love. Jazz, ballade, instrumental.... I've must have gotten it from mum.
I got interested in Japanese music when I started to look at anime... Well, actually, I think that Japanese people sings better than other nationalities.

What the dick.  It is not another genre because it's sung in another language.

I'm male, straight, 16, and I love industrial, EBM, and 90s and early 00s rock and metal music.

I think gender plays a role in musical taste because women are more open with emotional feelings, which is why more women than men listen to club and pop music that you're supposed to dance to. Most men will listen to metal, hip-hop, rock, and more mellow stuff in terms of beat and rythm. Stuff that you can't really dance to, unless you're a crazy idiot.

So sexual preference plays a small part as well, because most gay (or at least openly gay) men act feminine, and therefore would like the same stuff most women like. Of course there are plenty of straight men who act feminine, and gays who act masculine. Alot of the guys straight or gay who wear yellow and pink like pop music, so it does make sense that there is a connection.

I think intelligence and social status effects music preference as well. People who listen to classical music tend to be rich, educated, or think they're intellectuals (there is no such thing as an intellectual, because it's not intelligent to call yourself one, as everyone else will not like you if you do, making an intellectual a pointless label), and of course the people who listen to hip-hop tend to be poor and struggling, indie kids seem to be mostly mellow and easy-going, and punks are usually lost and out of touch.

Whatever...

If you post in all bold again I swear to God I will slap you so hard you won't have anything left to post with >< -Nphyx

Gender: Male
Preference: Rock (ranging from pop to hard), Metal (all), Hip-hop/rap with integrity (ie. stuff like JMT)
Opinion: Indirectly.
Why: Your gender strongly affects the way you are treated by society. If you are a girl, as you grow up your parents will give you dolls to play with, jewellry to put on, and dresses to wear. With these items, however, come the values they represent. This in turn will often have a great effect on other choices we make, for instance music.

Girls often prefer bands with a token girl being lead singer (token stands for someone of a certain race/gender to show that the band isnt racist/sexist). However the boys sometimes like that band if the token girl is quite hot.

Hmm....I'm not so sure about that. It may seem that way, but then why are bands like Hinder and Buck Cherry (FUCK them! -sorry) so popular with women? It's not like they sing like girls, but they do play the same "I miss you baby" stuff that girls seem to like - when men sing. Many of the songs with a woman as the singer have lyrics about having their heart broken or how much they love some nameless pawn.

However I do agree that alot of dudes listen to music because the singer is hot, and they probably keep listening to it because they've grown to like it.

This would imply that gender and sexual preference themselves do not actually affect what music you listen to, but the treatment that you get by everybody else concerning your gender and sexual preference does.  They're not the same thing.

Also stop bolding everything you type.

Gender : Male
Preference: Pop/Party beats, Rnb
Rihanna, Ne-yo, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Fergie, Chris Brown etc.

Hmmm, some people find it gay for me to listen to music by fergie (glamorous, what?? nothing wrong with it?) or sara barrielles(I caught my rocker friend humming the tune hehehe so whos girly now?).
My type of music is something upbeat, the type the makes your heart jump, party/dance floor like(hehe i dance thats maybe why). I dunno my ipod playlists are just a mix. I believe that music affects your mood, I want a happy mood that might also be why.

I usually find the people of a certain age listening to a certain kind of music. For example, I usually like the songs listened by 90% of the pupils in my class and the other way around (exceptions; 2 people listen to heavy metal and hardcore and all breakdowns of hardcore) while younger people (here at least) tend to listen to uninspired, crappy music like, extreme hardcore, happy hardcore, speedcore, etc. etc.

So I think that gender and sexual preference doesn't really influence the music they listen to, but I think that age does matter and to a certain extend, the environment where you live(d) in.

Gender : male 16 years old
preference : All types of rock and (eugghh I listen a lot to bullet for my valentine .. and that all metal i listen to)
opinion : I don't think so
why ?: well  , I've asked a bit around because this is an interesting topic ..
conclusion ? wel

I mself like rock and all , while one of my best female friends is one of the biggest metal fans if you ask me .
while others (male) don't like metal or rock ..
It depends to persons themselfs if you ask me . not to  gender .

Gender: Male, and extremely straight, mind you. I strongly hate anything "gay" or "les"

Preference: CLASSIC ROCK. CLASSIC METAL. CLASSIC PUNK. And some classic folk rock and classic folk ;)

Opinion: In today's world, music has lowered it's standards. Just go on disney channel, have a few grand to spend, and you are golden. No one in disney gives a crap if you can sing or not, as long as you have a pretty face. Look at Jonas bros, I mean, have you ever heard as many whines and voice cracks? And they call themselves punkrock. WHAT POSERS!!! Yah want punk rock, look up the Ramones. Do they have any slight resemblence to anyone who has ever been on disney channel? NO!!!!!!!!!

Look up the band "Queen" I know most of you 10 year old FOB fans are like "WTH IS THAT?!" Just do it. Now, can anyone sing like that, you ever heard? NO.

Why: Erm, cause disney hates kids? =p

I don't think Freddie Mercury is the only male artist in recent history with a broad vocal range; I'm not saying Queen is bad mind you, they're awesome, but you can't really say he's the only rock musician in 30 years to have a good singing voice, or that it's the sole factor in musical quality.

Actually I agree with your sentiment entirely - except you can't condemn all music just for being new :/  Tool is a decade more recent than Queen and Maynard James Keenan has similar vocal capabilities, at least to my ear; that's just one small example.  Bono from U2 is an amazing vocalist too; both those bands write some great music.  If you want me to name off some bands that have come along in the last decade, I apologize - most more recent music is not to my taste, but I refuse to believe good music is dead.  It's just being buried under piles and piles of mass-produced horseshit.

Male (do we need to include sexual prefrences too?)

I will listen to almost anything, EVEN trace ammounts of rap and some country (blasphemy? i realize). I attribute this too me being very much a type 1 and 2 (i think that's how it pans out..? the human brain listens to music in 3 ways, enjoyment, intelectual, and musical, enjoyment implying that u just like how it sounds, intelectual meainign you connect with the song on a mental level and can apriciate it's lyrics and emotion, and musical meaning u can examine and apriciate the actual construction of the song ... [/tangent])  any ways enjoyment/intelect listener. And i'm also a moody bastard plain and simple. I have a different mood for each day of the week, sometimes several, and those feelings usualy determine what kind of music i'll be connecting to. Weather it's Big Band Swing, Metal, classic Rock, pop Rock(not to be confused withthe candy) or god knows what else.

also in general if i find the lyrics of the song to be stupid i won't listen to it. Like a guy screaming into the mic whilst guitar's are broken behind him "RESPECT ME!".... that turns me off in a hurry lol.

I have never listened to hana montana. I usualy avoid radio disney on principal of not liking radio disney but if you recomend it i'll consider it.

Hmm this is interesting. I admit I prefer mostly male music over females. This is often because:
1) I prefer the rough gritty voice of a male in music rather than soft flowing voices of females. (Exception of some artists like Pink whos wild and remorseless tone adds a strong and tuff emotional depth)
2) I can understand most of what a male sings about compared to a female. Plus I can't listen to females singing about guys as it just feels utterly queer!
3) A lot of females seem to have to dress themselves up to publicise their music which kind of anoys me as if your care more about the profit earnt thanthe music you sing then I don't think your worth listening to. Lets face it though, almost every female artist has had a videoclip where they've dressed-up in skimpy clothes and conform to the stereotypic and expect views of society. It just puts me off.

Anyway this is coming from an 18yr old male who likes Eminem, Xzibit, Figgkidd, Hilltop Hoods, Trip Trip, Dre Dre etc... on one side of the spectrum whilst liking Jack Johnson, John Butler Trio, Bob Marely etc... on the other.

Gender: Male

Preference: Christian/Worship Music, Extreme Power Metal, Classical, Classic Rock, Techno/dance, Japanese Rock, Instrumental, Easy Listening, Some video-game music

Opinion:  Most of my music is similar, because they hit a cord with me.  Pun not intended LOL.  I like music that focus' more on the lyrics and the meaning of the song.  But then again I love just hearing the emotion in the melody of music.  Which would be why I like instrumental and classical.  Some of my all time favorite bands are, Kansas, Yes, Queen, Dragonforce, Tree 63, Daft Punk, Rodrico Rodriguez

Why:  Well why do I like them?  They really are bands that do what they do right.  Kansas has awesome lyrics that blow your mind, as well as great use of guitars and violin.  Dragonforce my God epic sound epic lyrics.  Queen, just amazing, Tree 63 some of the best Christian music ever made, seriously I think that their soul just pierces out of the music.
