Okay, I'm not going to continue this for much longer because I'm obviously in the minority.

ahhahahah what dude. it's obviously NOT WORKING, or else topics like this wouldn't exist. it's promoting discrimination by giving people something that they, as an individual, very possibly do not deserve.

now i'm going to sound like a white redneck here but i mean i don't believe in government handouts to ANYBODY and i'm very conservative on that anyway. but dude giving away some taxpayer's hard-earned money (whatever their race) to some leecher for no reason other than to fill a minority quota is morally disgusting.
I don't really know where you got the idea that I'm supporting giving away scholarships to non-deserving people, but I'm not. I still have yet to encounter a scholarship that is freely given to people without them having to work for it. I'm probably being excessively naive but I had no idea minority quotas were actually a thing.

The inequality gap between the average success of a white man in school versus a minority is staggering, so what do you suggest we do about it? Ignore the issue and hope it resolves itself?

Okay, yeah, having scholarships tagertting minorities is not going to fix the problem. There are obviously a TON of root causes that need to be addressed, and these scholarships could be doing nothing to correct it. I promise you I'm not being stubborn, but I do not see the negative effect here.

Then do it.

1. The Holocaust
2. Bosnia
3. Rwanda
4. Native Americans
5. Pretty much all of Africa (Sudan, Cambodia, etc.)

I can keep going if you like. Maybe if you flipped on the news every once and a while you would notice these things.
I'm well aware of each of these things, so stop trying to frame me as ignorant. You were downplaying the slave trade and don't understand its significance.

Not saying we should erase history of course, don't purposefully misinterpret what I said in an attempt to make some "profound" point, but why should my tax dollars go to a fund to pay for it?

How can you not understand that treating one ethnicity DIFFERENT does not promote EQUALITY. Its a contradiction. I mean seriously, you would have to be a real tool not to see that.
What "profound" statement am I making? Also, thanks for calling me a tool bro, it's real conducive to a good debate :thumb:

To be fair I think when dealing with slavery, the holocaust and anything similar, concepts of "worse" are bad to go down since they're all pretty atrocious regardless of the amount of people involved.

However, it has to be said that the people alive today weren't responsible for the slave trade.

I will concede my argument and tell each and every one of you currently disagrees with me that I am wrong, if one of you can supply me with a ligical explanation for this:

How does treating somebody differently make it so that they are treated equal?

All you dissenters out there get hung up on the other shit, and never seem to have any explanation for this one. That seems very strange... It couldn't be that there is no logical explanation and its all bullshit could it? I mean, any first grader can tell you that it doesn't make sense.

So I will repeat myself again in the same post, since this question seems to keep being avoided:

How does treating somebody differently make it so that they are treated equal?

dude what.

there are many scenarios that answer that question

heres one:

giving a low class minority a chance at school or a job through financial aid or private assistance puts them a little higher up along with those that already have that chance, aka a high class non-minority who has everything usually handed to them. the low class kids are treated differently, but it evens out the bar with the high class kids equality wise because both kids are getting the same thing, although the lower class gets assistance.

That only even makes sense if you are assuming that minorities are somehow less intelligent. What does that have to do with anything.

And here's a news flash, MOST people with money don't have it "handed to them", they do a little something called WORK for it. I didn't go to college because my family and I could not pay for it, I didn't have it "handed to me", and I am not a supposed "minority". You know what the difference is? I actually take some personal responsibility for where I am in life. I know that if I would have worked harder, I could have done it. Simple as that. I don't blame it on anybody else. Sure, there are plenty of people I know that had parents who just wrote a check for them to go to college, and I'm happy for them. I would do the same thing for my child if I could afford it.

what does that have to do with minorities being intelligent??? when did I say the standard for recieving the aid was based on intelectual merit? please read my posts better next time

as for the ones who have money already, good for them working for it, that isnt the point. its about those who DONT HAVE THE MONEY getting some aid.

also not going to college because you family cant pay for it is a pretty bullshit reason. my family has NO MONEY, they are bankrupt and im still going on working towards my masters degree. there are tons of financial aid and loans and scholarships you can apply for. Either you did really shitty in high school or you're just lazy. even now, you say I COULD HAVE DONE BETTER, there is no reason you cant go back to school at any point in your life.

I'm not going to keep this up since apparently having a civil debate is hard! But I will say that having scholarships that only minorities can be eligible for encourages equal opportunities. Putting minorities on equal footing with white people. Implementing the idea that minorities can succeed, earn equal salaries, have equal jobs as white people. This is not a bad thing.

Scholarships and financial aid should be given based on academic merit and financial need. Nobody is arguing against this.

Really? You mean I can still go to school? Wow, thanks, man, I never realized that. Luckily I have a smart guy like you tell me such things. Since you didn't read my post, maybe you should have read this line:

"I know that if I would have worked harder, I could have done it. Simple as that"

I hope my tax dollars help you get your degree when someone smarter than you and deserved it more could have used it. But hey, your a minority, so you deserve it. Your welcome.

Okay, cool, thanks for being a prick. Bye!

1. I bet I pay more taxes then you do. Does that confer me moral superiority over you?

2. By and large scholarships are private and non profit charity and their committees can grant them based on penis size if they so wish. These aren't your tax dollars. You asked the question why are there so many geared toward minorities and people on the poverty line. Well a scholarship is a form of charity. The trick to charity is to bestow it on those that need it the most.

3. Federal aid for college comes in the forms of subsidized loans. which the government is very thorough on collecting on. The only free money comes in the form of pell grants which are granted based on economic need and high academic performance. Pell Grants are small and are meant to reduce loan costs not pay for a free ride.

4. There is no valid economic reason someone who is middle class can't go to college. If you were a C and D student in high school and can't get a seat at a four year school to get a chance for a fafsa loan you can always go to a community college and still be eligible for the same aid with less debt incurred.

5. Children of wealthier parents who pay for their college didn't exactly pull themselves up from their bootstraps. If you got a public school education you didn't either. We all chipped in for you.

6. The only other people getting a true federal govt. free ride through college are GI Bill vets attending state university and imo they deserve it.

7. You wouldn't want to trade places with someone stuck on the social safety net. Such a decision wouldn't be out of principle. It would based on the fact that in that realm of poverty life is pretty shitty. And again if you offered to switch places with any of them they'd all take working for a living, having a stable living environment, and a normal family over all the perks of being on the dole as you like to think it any day.

8. This nation is at it's strongest and most stable when it fulfills it's promise of being an opportunity society where everyone has access to education and training that enables them to fulfill a productive and meaningful role in our society. Your access is not denied, because the less fortunate among us are given a little extra push to have access to those same opportunities. Stop bitching as if it was. If one school doesn't have a seat for you can complain it's prolly, because they gave it to some stupid on the dole minority. Or you could simply apply to another one. Really to be honest if you took care of business at high school in the first place you wouldn't have that kind of problem. All else fails community college takes all comers. You do well there it's usually pretty easy to matriculate into a state university.

Well
I think that this rivetting conversation has to come to a halt as there has been too much namecalling and what not
its great to have a heated debate but next time try to keep it more civil
