Dead Space

Dead Space is an over-the-shoulder horror/shooter "from the creative minds at video game colossus Electronic Arts comes Dead Space, an all-new horror series set in the terrifying reaches of outer space. Illustrated by top-tier talent BEN TEMPLESMITH (30 Days of Night), and written by ANTONY JOHNSTON (Wasteland), DEAD SPACE tells the gut-wrenching tale of a deep space mining colony that unexpectedly pulls an ancient and vicious alien life force from the dark rock."

Just got it last night for the PS3 and have only played about 1-2 hours of it. So far, I am extremely impressed.

Your ship crashlands onto the Ishimura, a ship designed to "bust planets". The second you walk off, you're separated from the rest of the crew and bad shit starts going down.

One really neat thing about this game is the HUD: Your HP bar is a liquid-filled(?) tube running up the main char's spine, your stasis points are located next to that in a little arc, all built into your suit. The unique RE4-style camera allows you to see your current ammo via a display on your gun, and accessing inventory screens is done by entering a holographic panel that shows up in front of the PC in real-time (no pausing to run for health drinks here!).

See the greenish bluish bar on his spine, the arc, and the display on his gun?

Anyway, I'll bring you more on the playability of the game as soon as I get more progress on it. But discuss! :)

--Oh, and PS3 players: If you go to the PSN, you can DL an "Obsidian Suit" that winds up in your Safe. It's only a little better than the 1st suit, but all your inventory spaces are unlocked which is awesome. I think X360 guys get a white suit.

This actually looks really good. "Bioshock in space" might be an unfair assessment, but that's what it appears to be at a first glance, and I mean that in a good way -- the atmosphere, the top-notch design choices, the creative ways to kill baddies ("strategic dismemberment," I think it's called, where you can chop off an enemy's limbs to restrict its mobility -- because with a lot of them, they'll keep coming at you even with their heads gone,) etc. This is pretty high up on my list of stuff to get once I have enough money to start buying games; I managed to catch a bit of footage on Screwattack, and it looks pretty awesome. I'm awful at shooters, though, so we'll see if I can manage to avoid embarrassing myself.

Actually Miek, "Bioshock in Space" isn't really an unfair assessment I'd say. It's not First-Person, and it controls differently, but the themes of creepy/nastiness are similar. Actually no I'd peg it more like HL2 (lots and lots and lots of action), except with kinda-RE4 mechanics and Bioshock atmosphere.

And yeah, the way to kill enemies is to creatively dismember them. Shooting them in the chest or whatever does little but weaken them and stall them. Shooting off their heads only makes it so they can't see, so they flail around wildly. The right way to kill them to to "disarm" them (literally!). A creepy part of it is that sometimes it's really hard to tell if they're dead. Like, they'll go down and be still for a moment, so you turn around and go about your business, then suddenly they jump up and run after you.

Another neat part is how the enemies really look different from one another. There seems to be like 5 or so different iterations of the same monster, so you could be fighting two of the same baddie and they look different (different shapes of "tumors" or arm appendages, or they're wearing different tatters of clothes, what have you).

And if you shoot off a limb and they fall, run over to them really fast and look at them. Something surprising pops out of the wounds :x

I saw this on X-Play, and it looks really good. I thought they said something about the game costing about 150 bucks?? Is that how much it is? I won't buy this if it's 150 bucks, as good as someone might think it is, that's too expensive.

No it was $60 just like anything else?? maybe there's a SUPER LIMITED EDITION PLATINUM XXX somewhere that costs that much but i doubt that too.

Oh, and I found another similarity to HL2

Gravity Gun, anyone?

(though they call it a Stasis unit)

Why does it always seem, that the games I have my eyes on for months are games you enjoy too vene!
must be fate lol
I should get it in a couple days and it does look great. I'm looking forward to the white suit!
Man this and Fable 2 are going to kill me!

I saw this at Blockbuster and considered getting it. I may just go back and buy it, but I have one question: What normally gets to me that makes me actually scared in survival horror games is ghosts. If I see a ghost or a possessed object or something, I'm done. It's the reason why I can't play Luigi's mansion (actually, it's cause those damn ghosts keep popping out at me >:[) or even watch game play of Silent Hill 4's apartment. Does this game have those? Cause if not, I may finally find a survival horror game that's not made in XP =D.

No, it doesn't have ghosts. But the dead do sometimes get up and come to life :x

Protip: Always stomp corpses so they're limbless.
You'll thank me later

Game's not super scary though. I mean it's gross, yeah, but not really scary. More action-packed than anything else. The "fear level" I'd say is just a little higher than Doom 3 (which wasn't really scary at all but was a little nasty).

I just got me a copy of this and tell you what, at that point where all the lights are off and you hear the steam in the pipes, it was scary to say the least.

I love how the audio just has you constantly turning around, to avoid surprises, which turns out to make you look like an idiot when nothing is there.

I just have to ask, before I decide to get this: is there a button to do an instant 180 turn to look behind you, or are you stuck spending 8 minutes turning around with the stick?

finished the game :thumb:

omg the last boss was like so disappointingly easy!!! :(((((( I didnt even get hurt once @_@

and yeah the ending left something to be desired.

but even still, good game :thumb:

I havn't seen to much of the gameplay, but it does look sweet from what I've seen.

It reminds me of Doom meets Bioshock sorta. I also like how the character is just your average guy on a mission to fix a technical problem, then he stumbles upon deaths door.lol It's a great story to say the least.

Just incase you did not notice this, whoever has beaten the game, look closely at the names of the levels.

Mission 1: New Arrivals
Mission 2: Intensive Care
Mission 3: Course Correction
Mission 4: Obliteration Imminent
Mission 5: Lethal Devotion
Mission 6: Environmental Hazard

Mission 7: Into the Void
Mission 8: Search and Rescue

Mission 9: Dead on Arrival
Mission 10: End of Days
Mission 11: Alternate Solutions
Mission 12: Dead Space

Haha! No, I never noticed that, man!

That's awesome

Here's my problem:

Ok, in Half Life, Gordan Freeman was able to survive the onslaught because of his amazing suit. In Dead Space, the guy is also just another engineer, but his suit is nothing special (while it looks different, the 1st suit has nothing special about it that set it apart like Gordon's Hazard Suit).

So all I'm saying is ... There MUST be soldiers or whatever onboard ONE of those ships who can do what Isaac does. I mean what's-her-face was able to move from room to room without even a single weapon. It would have been cool if you'd found atleast ONE other alive-guy :/
