I was old school FFXI, had a Mithra WHM/BRD. I left the game a short time before blue mages and corsairs and all that came along.

Money's still not great to earn, but the Grindin is less awful. They changed the EXP curve (44,000 exp from 74-75 instead of somthing like 80,000) and the new areas from the expsansion offer really fast EXP gain with quick kills. (In a good party i've seen EXP chains of 100+)

moneys still tough though. I've been leveling clothcraft which is costing me a fortune in gil T.T
