Character Drawing -Feeback Please-

Hello .Org community.

I have done a piece of art for my game "Blackfire". And i was wondering if anyone could give me some Constuctive critism.

Any detail no matter how minor would be great.

Awesome Bro

Lets see, my only criticism, is that it's a complete rip-off of Cloud, who is a complete and utter faggot, lol.

I can't really say anything about it, since I've gotta scroll for half a day to see any of it, lol.

A good resource for poses, so why does your character have a big sword which appears to look like a Buster Sword, and have a similar hairstyle ?

I mean, I really wish people would stop basing their characters appearance (And in cases, their personalities) from Cloud, I mean, he's one of the worst Final Fantasy characters ever, I wouldn't mind if you tried someone GOOD like, atleast Auron (Since he has a big sword too, but atleast he's got a better framework to base your characters off, especially for backstory...)

Also, it's just me on this one, but I'm REALLY not a fan of anime style eyes, I just don't like 'em at all.

You really need to learn anatomy. Anime is an extremely specialized style and to be a good anime artist you need to learn proportions and anatomy before you even start anime.

The hairstyle looks like the hair of nearly every anime protagonist that's ever existed. (the "hair over one eye" thing has been done to death)

The character looks really flat as well and the pose is awkward.

My advice: you need to learn the very basics before delving into figure drawing. The very basics. Every good artist needs to know them. Heck, I'm still drawing basic shapes like spheres and cylinders and I've been drawing for a good year now. If you want to get really good at figure drawing you have to learn how to break down the body into simple shapes and work from there. Every artist has to start from somewhere. It's kinda like you can't be a good hockey player if you can't hold a hockey stick properly.

@Dadevster

ok thanks for the feedback, i understand that its been overused. but its the style i like the most. And it looks like im going to have top go back to my books, and basics. But thanks, at lest you have told me what i need to do.

There's nothing wrong with drawing anime, it's just it takes more work to become good at it than most people expect, and it's not a great place to start if you want to become skilled in figure drawing.

As far as the design of your character, i think it'd be cool to see some gauntlets over the lower forearms, holding the long tshirt in place, the armor is on the right track, i would practice heavily on the shoulder pads. Like they said before anatomy and the proportion thing is what will make it look good! i'm still learning myself, but i'm realizing the more i do a certain area of the body and the more i pay attention to how i draw it the faster and better your mind will be able to draw it next time, yup just lots of practice. you tube has great anime tutorials, just take a hour a day a learn different body parts, and how the pros do different angles, keep at it!

dont do anime tutorials, do real anatomy, but yeah, youtube is a great place for some pointers and tutorials on figure drawing in general

I think it's a little un-called for to attack a person on their picture choice-of-character. Obviously this is an art critique thread, not an idea criteque thread.

as for your drawing, ther's a few things i'd like to address here.

1: 2D drawing vs. good 2D drawing
At the moment, you have a 2D drawing. It LOOKS 2 dimentional. the main reason for this I think is, is because of your lack of knowledge of the human anatomy. The way you've drawn this looks flat and has an un-filled body. What i mean is; you've put arms, legs and a head on a rectangle without thinking about how these limbs connect to each other. EG: a head is more or less an oval, the trapezoids connect the top of the shoulders to the neck (if you've ever drawn an dragonballz picture, you'll notice the massive neck muscles), opposite to those muscles holding the arms down are the lats. as you can tell, everything plays a part in making a picture of a person look realistic

2: Choice of armour
OBVIOUSLY, the clothing of a character is important, and it will define who your character s are in relation to each other and the plot. What you haven't thought of (again, going into anatomy) is HOW things connect and move with each other. the pauldrons, for example, look as if they are glued to the cuirass. how would a person be expected to lift their arms? you need to think of places for pivot points, the shape of the moving apparel to allow for it to pass body parts without impaling the wearer and the amount of detail and body shape allowed, also, you will need to think of the thickness of each 'material' used(the cape attached to cuirass, i believe, should be thicker and connected with more than just a nail through the fabric, do you know what i mean?).

3: Colouring and shading
I honestly hate what you have done with the hair. i'm sorry to be so blunt, but it looks terribly messy and i can see each colour you have used explicitly. whereas you have changed the style and used single colours with differing strengths on the rest of the drawing. I say, for beginners, keep it simple, keep it consistent and add shadows in respect to ONE SOURCE OF LIGHT. Think about the folds of clothing, the kinks of steel, the curces of steel etc.

i hope this has helped you at least a little bit

Thank you NexS

you have been very helpful. Im going to re draw my character and take in all the things that has been said here. Then i will re-upload the picture. And you may critisize that one.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

... Where in my post was I attacking LegacyX ? I was clearly stating that I don't like when people base their characters off Cloud or when they draw Anime styled eyes...

So as you can see, I wasn't aiming the post at just one person, but to everyone that does it...

Ok, ive done some reading, and watched a few tutorials on youtube. plus alot of practicing everyday.

But, it still feels like im missing something, or that something is not quite right.

Can you please give me some feedback and critisim...Nothing about cloud this time jbrist :P

his legs are way too small, and his torso is a bit short, he is lacking a real waist and hips, his hands are too small for his arms. other than the fact he is very dis-proportioned its a huge improvement from the first drawing.

my advise at this point would be to draw some simple figures, just focus on anatomy and proportion. forget about character design for the moment and get your figure drawing down, dont even worry about drawing the face or hands, basic shapes for hands will do, and the whole head can just be a basic shape of a head, just focus on getting good at drawing figures that look like a proper human shapes, getting the scale and proportion of the body correct anatomically, then when youve got a good grasp on basic human anatomy, practice things like hands and feet, the head and face, do page after page of hands and faces, hone your skills, and then, when you have that down a bit more solid, go back to drawing your character. i think youll notice another vast improvement for the 3rd rendition .

big improvement this go around, keep practicing

Gulch hit it right on the head.
The human anatomy is something difficult to master. The way i draw is that i do a muscular drawing denoting only the body. the clothes can be thought of as a 'layer' that goes on over the top. And i will help you with the clothing and folds etc when you get up to it.

But for now what i want you to do is this(and post it for inspection before you move on):

1. Draw a stick figure-type anatomy frame with how the character will be standing.
similar to this
how-bods1.gif

2. flesh it out. ie: draw the muscles etc. make it look like how the person would look (OMG DON'T SAY IT!) naked... but without naked bits... more of a figure sketch.

3. sketch out the BASIC types of clothing the person will wear, making everything basic. i can't emphasise that enough

4. do the detailing in the line work

5. colour *(two steps; a) basic colours, b) highlights and shadows.

Hope i can help :)

Thank you all, you have been all been very helpful, i have done another drawing and will post that as soon as it has been scanned in.

Edit:

I drew this last night... Before i got to see any off the comments.. So its probably not going to be a big improvement.
