Changing the Game.exe icon

Changing the game.exe icon
Make your game look sexier then average.

NOTE: The normal image used for the game.exe filehttp://i134.photobucket.com/albums/ ... l/game.png[/img] is the default for all RPG Maker XP made games. It looks a little unprofessional, and it seems like there's no way to get rid of it.

Step I:
Download Resource Hacker. This tool changes the icon in .exe files. Please be sure to visit their site and read any necessary readmes. Or don't. Your choice.

Step II:
Launch Resource Hacker. No install is required. Immediately go to "FILE" and then to "OPEN".
image1.png

Step III:
Using the new window that has popped up, find your game file. Open it and click on the file named "Game". After Selecting it click "OPEN".
image2.png

Step IV:
After clicking open, you will see a list of new folders in the Resource Hacker Window. you can browse through them, although that's not necessary, and it is possible to fuck things up if you try hard enough. Give it a once over, although this isn't necessary to proceed.

Click on "ACTION" and scroll down to "REPLACE ICON".
Image3.png

Step V:
I'm going to assume that you have the .ICO file that you intend to replace the Game.exe image with. If not, heres what you do:
1.) Make a 48*48 PNG of your desired icon
2.) Go here and follow the instructions.
3.) Your done. We may proceed.

Step V:
Click the button that says "Open file with new icon...". Using the new pop up window, locate your .ico file and click "OPEN"
Image4.png

You will be returned to the original window with a blocky version of your image to the left of the window, and the Game.exe image to the right. Your icon should look a little blocky; This is normal. Click on the button that says "Replace" to continue.
Image5.png

Step VI:
You are nearly finished with Resource Hacker. Just go to "FILE" and click on save. Again, you can fool around with the drop down folder shown, and you should see your icon on the right.
Image6.png

You are now finished. For verification, go to your game folder and take a look at whats there:
Image7.png

Afterthoughts:
You should see your icon named "Game" with greyed letters reading "RGSS Player", just as the old Icon would. Speaking of which, the wretched orange 12 point sun thing is still there, but is now called "Game_original". Go ahead and delete the fucker; it shouldn't mess with anything. Also, see what happens when you open the game. The icon will be there at the top of the game window and below at the tab for your taskbar. I'll leave that to your imagination ;)

A word of warning however: I believe this might make the game inoperable on all machines with color less then 16.8 million colors. so it shouldn't work on a windows 2000 or below I believe. I'm not sure of this, so don't take my word for it. Windows XP and Vista are compatible with this, so it shouldn't be a problem on those two OSs.

NOTE: This tutorial is NECESSARY to make a commercial game. The normal image used for the game.exe filehttp://i134.photobucket.com/albums/ ... l/game.png[/img]is copyright and part of RPG Maker XP. A commercial game can only be commercial if NO RTP RESOURCES MAY BE USED IN A COMMERCIAL GAME.

Where were you informed of this? I was under the impression that you could use the RTP in a commercial game, since you legally purchases the program and all it's content... After all, Aveyond used RTP graphics (although some modified).

I think the general idea behind the marketing of your own games was that EVERYTHING except the scripts must be homemade or edited in order to be legally marketed. Enterbrain used to enforce this, but they don't really care anymore. I think it says it somewhere in the EULA, although I don't think it mentions something about the games icon. I'll go ahead and remove that part of the topic as its partially untrue.

But on a moral standpoint; if I'm going to pay money to play their game, I had better expect more quality then anything used at the default.

Edit: aHA! part of the EULA from the RTP:
C.    Restriction
Licensee shall not reverse engineer, de-compile, or disassemble the RTP SOFTWARE.
Further, Licensee shall not sell, distribute, assign, lease, sublicense, encumber, or otherwise transfer the RTP SOFTWARE and/or its data without any
prior written consent of ENTERBRAIN.

Nice tutorial, I knew about the graphics, but I wasn't aware that the game icon needed to be changed.
You probably saved me a pretty penny.

Hey, that's a great tutorial. Just went ahead and did it, and everything worked a-okay. A few things, though. Some of the links were screwed up (they had the "http://http//www.whatever.com/" thing) and because I didn't know how to make .ico files (the site you have there led me to a messed up link. When I fixed that, it went to a site filled with information about HTTP O_o) I downloaded a plugin for Photoshop that allowed you to make .ico's. Anyway, good tut, I think I'll use it for my game. Do you want credit, or no?

Try delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip

Don't quote me on this, but does that possibly mean the actual RTP -software- as in the actual RTP files, instead of referring to their inclusion of use? Many sound effect libraries have similar claims, but the idea is that you cannot distribute the actual files, yet they can be used/mixed in clips and etc. - just without having the actual clean file out in the open.

Shit, I think the url tag automatically screwed them up when I posted. Weird. Its fixed now.

I'm honestly not sure. Either way, if you make a profit from your game by means of commercial use, and they catch a trace of of the RTP in it (although they don't intentionally look anymore), then you've broken the RTP EULA.

It has been discussed time and time again. It is legal to sell an RMXP project commercially, even if it uses the RTP. BUT it is illegal to sell the RTP itself.

Anyway.

Is there a way to change the actual name of the icon? I worked out how to set a new description already but the name just seems weird as "Game".

w/e we're not arguing about the rtp anymore. I'm going to take a look into doing just that now. I have also come across on ow to make the game automatically launch into fullscreen at the games start. Think anyone could use that tutorial?

Edit: I also figured out how to change the games description. Ill add that to the tutorial later.
Edit #2: I have found a interesting alternative to it though; a shortcut that leads to the Game.exe file can be named whatever you want, and before you encrypt everything (or don't) set the original game.exe status to hidden.

an .ICO file is essentially a file that contains nothing but a symbol, and can then be attributed to an actual file to give it a symbol.

You need to make a 48*48 PNG and convert that into an .ICO file in order to change the game.exe icon. The instructions for converting your PNG into a ICO have been included in the tutorial.

Make an image file, that's 48x48, and save it as .PNG?

MS Paint (XP+) saves as PNG or you could use something like IrfanView to convert it.

Sorry, I must warn you... "Licensee shall not reverse engineer, de-compile, or disassemble the RTP SOFTWARE."  This clearly means that you cannot decrypt or alter such files such as the runtime.dll or Game.Exe.

Altering and replacing the icons in the Game.Exe file would most likely be in violation of the License.  And there have been discussions on this subject as well.

Copyrights... Third post by Gratheo regarding this.

(Too important for users not to reply.)

Would it matter if the project was commercial or not?

The rules are probably the same, whether it's commercial or not.  They're much less likely to get angry about it if it's not commercial, but they could say that you're breaking the license agreement and take legal action if they wanted to.

It's disputable whether or not Game.exe consitutes part of the actual software, or whether it is a part of your game (i.e. editable). I don't think a concensus has ever been reached; I personally see nothing wrong in this as it is really just changing a shitty graphic into another shitty graphic; but others will see differently I'm sure.
