Here at the top you can view a checklist. The checklist is made up of small tasks that come together to form a benchmark. My first benchmark is a fully functional battle demo with all the trimmings.

The Veil is a religious notion that we all receive a veil that hides our experiences from pre-life.
Recently an organization has claimed to have found empirical evidence regarding the Veil.
Because of this, many religious, government, private, and military institutions have begun quarreling and the public has been flooded by a media storm.
Consequently, emotions and beliefs have boiled over and everyone has begun their search.
Where will these events lead us as we pursue our own dreams? What will we fight for? What lies Beyond the Veil?

Strong willed warrior and impersonator. Working with Cyrus to "take back what's everyone's."

CYRUS
21 year old Male

CODY
22 year old Male
Hot-headed and cutthroat. Cody was taken in by Cyrus and has been training under him to be his commander when Cyrus cannot be present.

MEGS
21 year old Female
Gunslinging cohort of Cyrus and Dexter. Uses her revolvers to spread chaos and anarchy though only to the extent that Dexter will allow.

THATCHER
20 year old Male
A young hermit who is wanted by many for his strange powers. It's unclear what his motives are and who he's really working for.
Full Name: Unknown
AKA: Thatcher
Weapon/Style: Necromancy
Weapon Name: Grave-A large powerful sword that feeds on energy. If it is stuck into an enemy or the ground, it will absorb what life energy exists there.

JEM
21 year old Female
Headstrong girl who seems to keep appearing unexpectedly. Driven by the conflicts that threaten her community.
Weapon/Style: Unarmed/Boxing
Weapon Name: Lead and Rear (left and right)

WOLF and BEAR
Two detectives who are often at odds with each other despite mutual goals

END
19 year old Female
Fearless reporter who goes anywhere, no matter how dangerous to get the scoop. Though
her weapons and training couldn't have come from a journalist's salary...
Weapon/Style: Experimental Multi-Use heavy rifle



Combo

Most important aspect of battles. Consecutive hits against an opponent will create a combo.
Once it's time for the opponent to act or a Finisher is used, a Combo will end. Combos increase
the effectiveness of attacks and provide better bonuses and prizes.

Command Skill

The Bread and Butter of characters during battle. Mix and match different skills to create your own unique fighting team!

Starter
An innate attribute associated with each character. Whoever gets the first hit of a Combo will
apply their Starter attribute to every hit of that Combo until it ends.
Example Starters...
Tea--Hotfoot: CT restore to attackers during Combo
Pine--Cash Cow: CASH bonus during Combo
Lynn--Posse: Bounty bonus during Combo

Finisher
Nearly every attack Skill used by characters can be a Finisher. A special input while
selecting the Skill for an attack will transform that Skill. A Skill that is a Finisher will
reset a Combo to 0 but increases its effectiveness based on how big the Combo was.
Some also gain new properties entirely. Nearly every Finisher gets a damage bonus
based on the length of the Combo as well.
Example Finishers...
Tea--Satellite Wheel: Attack and raise DEF for a turn. Finisher: Restore HP based on Combo
Pine--Sandstorm: Attack all enemies. Finisher: Earn CASH based on Combo
Lynn--Zantetsuken: Attack with a chance to instantly KO. Finisher--KO chance up based on Combo

Overdrive
As characters fight in battle fighting spirits rise and fill the Overdrive meter. The meter is filled a percentage equal to the hit of the Combo the attack makes plus four percent. So an attack that is the seventh hit in a combo will increase that character's Overdrive by eleven percent. Overdrive is used to perform powerful skills and dynamic actions. Overdrive skills generally cost a multiple of 25% of Overdrive to use.
Boost is a special action that costs 50% Overdrive. During any attack, the player can press the corresponding character button to have that character attack in tandem with the original attacker or have the same attacker attack twice.

Resource
Like Overdrive some characters have other resources to manage. Lynn has Bounty which determines the strength of a powerful move. Shane has Cards which allow him to take action at any time. END has Ammo which is required to use her powerful skills.

Style
Style is the reflection of your personal expression and prowess in battle. As you fight battles characters
earn Style. The better you fight the more Style is earned.

Battle Chain

Fighting with great Style may bring on new challengers! Most every battle has a Style Milestone
to be reached. Reaching this will allow you to fight a new harder battle--this brings new challenges,
new and better item drops, more CASH, and more Style earning potential. Every battle started
this way, adds to the Battle Chain. The Battle Chain itself provides bonuses to CASH and Style.
These battles begin with your current HP, but also with your current Overdrive and Resources.
Use lower level fights to boost your resources, then unleash them on tough foes!
When you decide to decline a match agains an opponent or you don't

Prize Multiplier
As you attack and defeat enemies, the Prize Multiplier increases. KOing an enemy increases
it by a large amount, while attacks only raise it slightly. Over time, while CT refills, the multiplier
slowly decreases. Style, CASH, and Items earned is multiplied by the Prize Multiplier. Defeating
enemies quickly and consecutively is the key to a high multiplier.

Path of Enlightenment
As Style is a form of personal expression and understanding it is used to help characters
in their Path of Personal Discovery. The Path of Enlightenment is a landscape to be explored.
Style earned is used by the character to express and learn more about themselves. Using
Style while on the Path of Discovery unlocks latent abilities and more areas to explore in
their path. Exploring the path reveals new paths and abilities. Spending Style allows the
character to open these new Paths and learn these latent abilities. Some Paths may only
be opened after an important event transpires. Abilities to unlock include:
-Skills
-Skill Upgrades
-Stat Increases
-Character Specific Benefits
-Catalysts and Bonuses
-Craft Recipes


Dynamic Support System

This system lets you create custom character attributes to help in battle. Customize your
characters to fit your playing style! Dynamic Support System (DSS) is broken down into
two major parts: Catalyst and Bonus.
The Catalyst is a special condition that must be met in battle. They vary greatly from
straightforward or simple to complex or risky. Catalysts have a multiplier based on this
which affects the quality of the Bonus.
The Bonus is a special effect that happens when the Catalyst is met. These vary even
more than Catalysts.

Example Catalysts...
-While HP critical
-Attacking while HP critical
-Striking Enemy weakness
-When KOing enemy
-When Struck by enemy

Example Bonuses...
-HP restore
-Extra Hit
-CT Damage
-Extra Overdrive
-Auto Attack
-CASH Bonus
-Character Specific

With these examples alone there are 35 different possibilities. Some more desireable than others.
For example: CT Damage while KOing enemy would be useless.
Character default DSS include...

Tea: CT damage when striking enemy weakness
Pine: CASH bonus when attacking with HP critical
Lynn: Bounty increase while HP critical
Lynn: Bounty increase while KOing enemy
Shane: Auto Attack when struck by enemy.

Crafts
Outside of battle, many Crafts are available to enrich your experience of the game and provide practical rewards. Example Crafts include...
-Fishing: Play a fun mini-game to catch fish for eating and glory!
-Cooking: Combine materials to create new dishes. Discover each character's likes and dislikes! Food, modeled similar to real life, allows characters to eat every so often. After eating, characters gain temporary benefits.
-Smithing: Create a wide variety of weapons, armor and accessories for characters to wear.

Marvelous Customization: CASH is key to creating unique and powerful characters. Equipment slots can house weapons, armor and accessories. Mix and match to create a physical powerhouse, or an ever-ready tactician. There is a give and take to all equips so characters remain balanced and fun.

Dynamic Characters:
Characters in 'Beyond the Veil' are house to many wonderful and exciting techniques. Like equips, there is a give and take to techniques and taking action in battle. No ability is useless and no ability outclasses another. Further, while single characters can play fun and practical with all base abilities, a multitude of abilities are to be learned and discovered for all.

Hmm, this may prove quite interesting. Though giving abit more of your story wouldn't hurt. Due the fact it seems well thought out, I'll give you the advantage of the doubt. But normally I give a rant over descriptions so short and barely saying anything about the ingame story.

Also, maybe it's an idea to show images of your characters above their descriptions.
 
Awesome. I like the story and I like the way the sprites look. I am also eager to learn more about your game. Feel free to contact me if you need a little scripting assistance. I guess I'm still a novice scripter, but I'm catching on fast. :lol:

Yeah descriptions are hard. I want to reveal things to make it interesting, but I don't want to spoil anything either.

Just wanted to get something up. Obviously rushed because of the crazy bulleting. I liked the template in the sticky, but totally effed up because I don't really know what I'm doing with text scripts^^;
 
You know if you dithered those sprites they'd looked like King Of Fighters type sprites.

Overall, good stuff you've got here. Keep on pushin for completion.
 
The story's been done a handful of times but I'm sure it can still be pulled of elegantly. I'm looking more forward to the battle system and the custom sprites to be honest. I'm really liking the way the sprites look, and the battle system sounds like that of Legaia's, which I found really satisfying. I really hope you finish this, and I wish you the best of luck.

Tiny update. Had this character finished up a long time ago, but recently recolored him to fit his role and personality (used to be more militaristic looking--greens and such).
Eager young man who is out to prove himself. Rechanges his thinking after he was defeated in a chance encounter.
Uses Bullets rather than AP to execute attacks. Each attack is more powerful, but Bullets are difficult to replenish.

The character sprites are mine, but the dust and flame effects aren't.
Updated the first post with recruitment links, because yes... I very much so need a scripter and, as the link will point out, I offer my services as a concept artist, spriter, and designer as well as monetary compensation.

Hopefully Winter break will give me some time to get some work done.

Thanks for the input, guys! Don't hold back on the constructive criticism, I really appreciate that so far. I'm not new to visual art, but I still have a long ways to go with writing. Hopefully it will still measure up ok in the end.
 
Updated first post with some enemy sprites and abstracts.
Was busy this break so little work was done, but I'm back at my house and hopefully I'll have a demo out in February.
