Age isn't an excuse for newbism!

Whatever happened to it being illegal to join a forum if you're under 13 years of age?

When I first tried to join a forum (I was 12, long time ago) I was told I couldn't as it was illegal, in Americanland, to join an online community, because of the whole child protection thing. I know I'm in teh_uk, but the website was in Americanland.

Was this just some BS the community made up, or the truth?

Sort of BS, there's no real rule stating that but a forum can make up and enforce any rule it wants.
although I recall a certain law stating kids under 13 (16 in some places) requiring parental consent to sign up for forums it probably would not have been in effect when you were 12 since it was only made around three or four years ago.

LOL , OF COURSE AGE IS AN EXCUSE !
For I myself , I live in Belgium , Enlish isn't a main language heer and you only get enlishe when your 13 !
AND THATS ONLY BASIC ENLISH !
So , Age is defenly an excuse for bad grammer . ATLEAST if you live in a country where enlishe isn't a main language -.-

Uh, well ... If you don't know English well enough to keep up with other people speaking English, then ... Maybe try a board in your own language until you learn English well enough? I don't go to Spanish forums (for instance) and say "Hey ppl no sé el language-o de modo que traytez de AVERIGARR lo KUE estoy diciendo está OK??!!!!???!!"

I mean, we still have to read this crap. And I've seen a number of people with English as their second language who speak perfectly fine (such as Charlie Lee).

We were talking about age being an excuse to native-English-speakers.

It could be...if you think about it.

Some young people aren't mature/good at grammer. An 13 year old's average grammer is usually with a few noobish mistakes. Some are very good at grammer.
Believe me, if you've seen my school.

As for maturity and internet-wise, it really comes to how long you've adapted to the internet. Like not knowing "dis is cull" is not usually reffered as cool, yet at the same time you may be fine with your grammer in real life so...
Maturity is also how social you are in real life too.

But when you grow up, you easily take up on it in your own style.

My apologies if I seem to be repeating what others have said.

From my perspective, I think the whole "I'm insert pretty young age here" excuse is used quite often when someone who is probably experienced in the world of the internet tells some random kid off. This excuse is used so that others can give the kid of young age some pity or at least make people take it easy on him/her. Isn't it offensive to others who are at the age range of 10 to 14? Doesn't that excuse tell people that kids at the age of 10 to 14 are complete noobs?

I've seen a couple of forumgoers who were at the age of 12, 13 and 14 act very mature for their age and type well (not taking shortcuts in their typing, etc.). I've seen a 13 year old become a staff member at a community I go to. I've seen a 14 year old present their RPG Maker project quite nicely. I've seen a 12 year old in a random IRC channel and forum discussing with some older forumgoer/IRC user about "RMXP vs RMVX" talking about how RMVX is crappy compared to RMXP in an organized manner while some RMVX fanboy is freaking wailing "RMVX IS BETTUR THAN XP SHUT UP!"

Anyone at any age could be a total noob. I could be very wrong here and hey feel free to correct me but it looks to me like the younger forum-goers are more prone to being noobs than older forum-goers.

I blame AIM and kids who type in shortcuts or leet in an attempt to make themselves look cool.

Well, I'm 13, and I've had my fair share of noobish posts (Blame RMRK bastards for saying I was good at mapping!), but I really think that anyone at any age can avoid being a noob.  drewdle was being an embarrassment to all 13 year olds that have half a brain.  By saying "hey stfu im 13!!1!1," he was essentially saying: "All 13 year olds are morons, so you can't say I'm stupid cuz' I've already said it!"
He was an example of a N00b.  A Newb is a person like Shadowcorperations and NGames.  They're far too naive, and there's nothing wrong with that, people just tend to flame them like hell.  They don't deserve to be flamed like that, after all, they've never really been told that they did something wrong in RMXP, so they still think their game is good.

With experience, Newbs can become good at what they do.  N00bs on the other hand, are just annoying folk that probably know they suck, they just get pleasure out of annoying people.

I think that pretty much destroys the age is an excuse argument, most of my posts aren't that well thought out.

Really? I never really think about my posts, they just come to my head, I type them, then I revise it if I don't like it.

Being new to the whole internet computer thing isn't also an excuse. If you're new at computer you 'would' type with proper English.

No, you "wouldn't". In fact, that's quite an ignorant suggestion.

It is human instinct to do whatever it is you are familar with. When it comes to the internet, people feel that texting and chat rooms have a link, which isn't really debatable. It's like MSN, or any other messaging services. What they don't understand is that message boards aren't like that, as you have all the time in the world to write a reply (unless of course the topic's about to get locked, in which case, type fast!) Message boards are more like e-mails. Now, people usually do take e-mails a lot more serious than message boards. However, it takes time. Which is why they are called newbies. n00bs on the other hand are born dumbarses. They're also perfect disguises for rag3rs, which most of them are nowadays. I admit, I used to be a newbie. But only for a week or so...

I adapted to the internet quite quickly, as those that ruled it, are the ones that I bullied at school, so I knew that their minds worked in a similar way. Technicalities and popularity. See, the peeps who are popular on the internet were probably never popular at school at all. Mainly because brawn outdid their brain. On the internet though, they prevailed. So like the top dogs/bullies at their schools, they tried to make their own utopia, where everything could work for them. And it could, because they had control. Mainly in the communities we now call forums. They could make rules, and if any of them were broken, then they could punish them. And quite obviously, they still can. But if you play them at their own game, using your brain, using technicalities as well as popularity, then there's nothing they can do, as they cannot punish them for breaking rules that they have not broken, and if they did, the popularity of said 'member' would ultimately prevail, placing the leader under a lot of strain from complaints of key figures of the community.

See, it all makes sense. There's a natural pecking order everywhere, and it just so happens that the intelligent are dominant on the internet, whereas the dumb are at the bottom of the chain, being infected by spyware and adware. People like me though, the ones that didn't get beat up, the ones that could call in favours, the ones that observed, and took note of how things work, we are the ones who will never fail. We know too much. Too witty. Too charming. Too clever. We have the right blent of intelligence, common sense, and charisma. That is the kind of president I would like to see...

Wait, which topic am I in again?

Yeah, I'm a firm believe in the term 'survival of the fittest'. Plus, I love to analyse human behaviour. Not enough to write it down, but I don see very familar behaviour patterns throughout humankind. I could pigeonhole pretty much everyone, even myself. I blame Atheism for screwing me up though. It made me look at everything as a working mechanism of some kind.

How is it an ignorant suggestion? People who are new to the computer sensation don't even know what noob is or means. Kids these days writes like that because computer has taken over our lives.

No, a computer may have taken over your life, but it hasn't got it's wires on everyone. There are people who type normally, there are people who type like the wrong use of grammar, spelling and punctuation result in the death penalty, and there are those who type fast-hand (or 'text'). I don't mean to flame, but if you cannot understand this, then you really are an idiot, and you need to get your head into the real world.

Oh, and to point out the obvious before anyone else does, not everyone types in English.

What i mean from "taking over everyone's lives" it's because right now everyone depend mostly on computers and nearly every kid in town knows what myspace is. So yes, computer has taken over our lives. Everyone uses the internet these days.

Yes that's the real world. The world where everyone uses computers.

No, that is the world of tomorrow. Today still has relics from the 20th Century, and until they fall, I'm afraid your 'vision' of this planet is very blurred. I'm sure there's plenty of African kids who'll agree. Hell, the majority of my 16-house street will agree with me.
