A Great Year for Nintendo

I remember the beginning of the Next-Gen Period, when everyone expected the XBOX360 to be the best, and Ps3 was going to be at the top. But after looking at the line-up and creativity with the new controller, I think that this is actually Nintendo's Greatest Year. Most people find that the Wii is affordable and all-around user-friendly. My grandmother plays the Wii, and not just Wii sports, but now she has taken a appreciation to the Zelda franchise and is very skiled in Elebits. Not only elderly people, but even younger children actually can play, My 3, 4 and 8 year old cousins can join me in Mario Party 8 or Elebits for a good showdown for top cousin. The Wii is almost available in every home on my street, just walking out the door and muttering Wii party will have everyone at your house with their Wiimote and customized Mii's.

Yes, Nintendo has had some failures with the Gamecube, especially the overwhelming supply of childish games and not enough games for older audiences, the Wii offers a wide variety and not only of Wii games, but Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment System, Turbo GFX and Sega Genesis. This really gets old school gamers and Neogamers a view into the past and is one of the First Consoles to be able to go over 13 years into history and bring playable games from it.

The one game that I saw on the Wii that really impressed me, was Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I know, I know, it's so fan-biased and many people just brag about like Halo and Halo 2, but it's is true, many say, the graphics, yeah, that is one but it is only part of the deeper meaning. I don't think anyone has noticed the Emotion Engine in this game, that wasn't really available before. In Majora's mask, most of the characters had a set expression or had the marker-drawn expressional appearance. In TP, the facial expression were "engraved" on the face. I noticed this in the mission where you have to escort Ilia and the Zora Prince to Kakariko, Telma was doing things with her face, I hadn't seen in a Zelda game before and I also noticed, everyone moved differently and each step was precedented differently. I also then noticed..."This Zelda game is the most story-driven Zelda i have ever played." And it was true, the game had enveloped me in such captivating cutscenes. I didn't even notice.

These are only a few that were buzzing through my mind, but I bet you don't want to read EVERYTHING on my mind, so I will let you guys have a say. XD

WARNING: My post contains some naughty language. I apologize, but this is a tender subject for me.

Honestly, I think the Wii is Nintendo's biggest failure ever. Not from a sales point, because it's doing pretty damn well, but as a console geared to the "hardcore game" in mind, it's just really, really, really lame.

Nintendo shot themselves in the foot when they made the machine's technology. I can understand they wanted it to be affordable and available to everyone, thus engaging the "price battle" side of the console war, but every game that has appeared on the Wii looks noticeably worse than any other incarnation. Twilight Princess had fucken N64 textures and midi-music, Call of Duty 3 looks downright ugly, Red Steel isn't any prettier, and all of it's original 1st party games look like first generation gamecube games. I'm no graphics whore; gameplay is the first and most important thing but that brings me to another point:

The Wiimote is nothing more than cheap, underused novelty like the DS's two screens. It sounded like a cool idea, could have been used well, but so far it's done nothing but cause frustration during first person shooters and it's added a really annoying and difficult learning curve to other games like Dragon Ball Z and Mortal Combat. Where I could normal use the d-pad to pull off combos, I now have to jerk and move the god damn remote to pull off an even more complicated move. Oh, and one big thing

WHY THE FUCK IS THERE A FUCKING SPEAKER ON THE GOD DAMN REMOTE!?!?!?! I hate that thing! I HATE IT with a fucking passion! I had to tape over it because it seriously, too annoying to bear. While underway, I live on the ship in a berthing with 80 other guys and they don't appreciate SWISH! SWING! HEY LINK!! in the middle of the night emanating from the loud ass speaker on the remote that CANNOT BE MUTED.

Next, the backwards compatibility... it's a good idea, but useless in the long run. The Wii is not an enclosed space friendly machine. In order to play gamecube games or access your virtual arcade, you need to use the wiimote. If I'm at a hotel or in a cramped room, I don't want to have to bust out that damn sensor with the LONG ASS CORD that I always keep a garbage twisty by to wrap the thing up.

Anyways, all the games the Wii has to offer, I've already played and beaten so I don't care. I can get super metroid for free on the internet with a 5 minute google search. Yeah, it's not very moral but what do I care? I'm a gamer with no morals. What incentive do I have to play MARIO KART for the 60 millionth time when I played it 20 years ago and it's available on the DS in a better form? The turbo grafx games are nice, mainly because I haven't touched my turbo since I was 6, but every adult who remembers COMMODORE 64 and NES FRONT-LOADING TOASTER won't care about playing the original Zelda and the kids of this generation are internet savvy... they're going to know how to download the roms.

FINALLY, my biggest hatred is over Nintendo's lack of support. It's almost been a year and what does the Wii have to show for itself? A zelda game, several bad 'novelty mini-games', and a pile of shitty ports. Everyone's waiting on Smash Bros. Brawl, but one game isn't going to make me very happy. I bought the Wii on the release date and I after I beat Zelda, I didn't touch it again until I bought paper mario last week. That's, what, 7 months of inactiveness when my xbox 360 has been running almost every day?

Once again, Nintendo spits in the eyes of people who like playing serious games. Everyone wonders why people associate them with kiddy shit and this is why: THEY ONLY APPEAL TO GUYS WHO LIVE AT HOME OR COLLEGE DORKS. I travel a lot and when I'm not travelling, I work out of my home where I live by myself. I don't have 3 random guys to game with at any one time and I like to sit down and play by myself. Right now, only the 360 and ps3 can handle my addiction. Nintendo is making money regardless due to its "casual design" but for me, a hardcore gamer, the Wii is just a big waste of money that I'm going to keep for collection reason.

So until Nintendo releases something more than Brawl and Kid Icarus 3, I'm just going to stick with Mass Effect and Bioshock.

Pretty sound objections, but you can turn off the speaker. Wii is very shallow at this point, which would explain the reason why I have been playing old GC games that I missed out on. To me, you sound like you are more towards the "hardcore" crowd, mentioning games like Bioshock and Mass Effect and whatnot. I bought my Wii to have fun, and honestly, it hasn't even done that. Metriod Prime 3 looks awesome, as does Brawl and Galaxy, but they should've had those on launch day. I agree with your statements, but I have no doubt it will only get better.

Mega Flare

Awesome Bro

wii fun o.O ive played it a few times at my friends houses and well... its not FUN... zelda TP is better on the cube. Yes i am going to get a wii just for brawl. and i agree with everything that Marcus said cept il stick to my motorstorm and RFOM :p

but you can turn off the speaker.
PLEASE TELL ME HOW!!!

My parents enjoy the Wii more than I do so that's just further proof that it was designed for the "videogames are a minor distraction" crowd. I haven't seen Metroid Prime 3 yet, but I like what Retro whatever studios did to the original games so I might get it. I pray that things will pick up speed, but I see no really exciting games in the future so I'm just going to stick with using the Wii as a paper-weight/miniature cube.

In the home menu, you can select the Wii Remote setting, and hit the minus button until its completely down. And although many games don't look very interesting, I gave a few games a try, and found myself surprisingly entertained. Elebits is pretty cool. I enjoyed SSX Blur, and Super Paper Mario was great. Budokai Tenkaichi was fun, and so was NFS: Carbon. I'm not sure you'll like all these games, but do give some lesser known titles a try, and then see if you still hold the same arguments.

And no games on the horizon???

A few just to look forward to:

RE: Umbrella Chronicles, FFCC: The Crystal Bearers, Mario Kart Wii, No More Heroes, Ghost Squad, Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (confirmed to have 32 player online), Battalion Wars 2, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Tales of Symphonia: Ratatoskr no Kishi, and a few others.

TLOZ: TP doesn't have Nintendo64esque graphics, they are actually pretty awesome, but if you still hold to your standing, save up your money and buy Soulcalibur Legends. This game is said to be one of the best games and fully utilizes the Wiimote and just randomly swinging around the controller is equivalent to button mashing, getting your butt schooled. Not only is it a fighting game, but an action-adventure, and the graphics are said tobe made using all they can use of the Wii Hardware. So hopefully when you are able to play this, it can change your mind.

My case is oppo of yours, my PS3 and Xbox360 have been the ones collecting the dust, but hey, many people have different tastes am I correct?

FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING RETARD THE WII RULES!! FUCK WHAT FUCKING MIDI MUSIC! FUACK! FAUCK! FUAFDCK!

Okay, don't read that if you're not Marcus. He's one of THEM! Is he blind?

... That was retarded. :/

@Marcus: I haven't got full experience with my wii since I don't own any "Wii Games" yet. There are some more titles coming out with the system, though I feel there are too many promises made and not enough good releases, take Brawl for example.

Other than that, I don't care about its close-to-gamecube graphics, and what's wrong with appealing to the non-gamer audience? Tell me that.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's just how it is ;-;

I liked the gamecube, there weren't that many games that I'd just play for it, but the ones I would were practically god-like quality.

The Wii however, looks like... A novelty. It's supposed to be 'accessible', and 'easy to figure out' for me, pretty much just = simplistic. The only thing the Wii has that seems like I'd enjoy is the virtual console, because it's hard to find old games without being illegal about it. (also, I like Guilty Gear, which speaks to my taste, I like things to be ridiculously complex at incredible speeds, something the target audience of the Wii is definitely not pointed at)

All in all, I think the Wii is just an attempt to bring gaming to a broader audience, rather than make it better in any way, which saddens me. I don't really mind the graphics, but that's the thing that bugs me, a gamecube is under $100, and has practically the same graphics, what the hell makes the Wii like three times as expensive? It's only cheap in comparison to the other consoles, the controllers are still expensive as hell too.

Marcus, to turn off the "Damn Speakers" Just press the home button, and then press remote options. ;)

I myself am playing Twilight Princess, and am about half way (or at least I think I am) finished with it. (I just beat the sand temple, and am fishing for the red fish)

I LOVE the heck out of that game!

Man... I mean, true, the graphics are not the very best (thinking of a PS3) but that is quickly made up with the fantastic music, awesome battles, and really, really good puzzles.

Not to mention a killer storyline that has me addicted!

I think the wiii has done very well since its release, and now that they are becoming easier to get (ie, in stock everywhere) they are popping up everywhere.

Anyway, that is just my opinion...

The Wii is getting Accent Core....

Anyway, I believe that the Wii has alot of potential, but devs aren't taking advantage of it. Right now, the wiimote is just 'what can we do to act like an extra button', instead of making totally new experiences. Which is a plain shame, no matter which way you look(yay Peter Frampton). And then there are those that just make a game and throw in a cheap gimmick. Atleast SSBB is doing something right. If you can't make something that works with the game, then just don't. Focus on making a good game, not making a game that uses controls just because they're there.

Thank god it's not only coming out for Wii, that'd probably force me to buy one, which would probably also make me shoot myself in the leg. You know, as punishment.

Seriously, I want to see videos of people trying to effectively play that game using the fucking wii controls, it will be the most hilariously bad venture ever. It's... possible I suppose if the buttons were mapped to the motion sensor rather than the movements, but that would just be silly, considering you couldn't do two motions at once, which means no dust attacks, roman cancels... I mean how can I do the endless uppercut if I can't press three buttons at once?!

Suffice it to say, the Wii appeals to me for some of the games on it, but it's practically a fucking requirement for me to be able to turn off the motion sensor controls, because it's really annoying. I like to play a game, not make an ass of myself. If I want to do that I go to the arcade and play games I'm not good at with other people that are good at them. (marvel vs capcom ;-; )

Guilty Gear waggles to Wii, PS2
New publisher bringing Arc System Works' long-running fighting series to US this fall.
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Jun 22, 2007 12:03 pm PT

First sleuthed out in February, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core will be heading to the US on the Wii and PlayStation 2 this fall under the guidance of a new publisher, Aksys Games. Accent Core debuted in Japanese arcades last year, and has since seen a PlayStation 2 version hit the Land of the Rising Sun in May.

Arc System Works' latest XX installment further refines the Guilty Gear X2 formula, which itself is a refinement of the Guilty Gear X line of 2D fighters. Accent Core will feature a revamped fighting system that introduces three new gameplay mechanics, as well as new audio and visuals, and two fighters that had previously been seen only in Japanese iterations. In addition to support for the GameCube gamepad and Classic Controller, the Wii version will introduce motion-sensing controls for punching, kicking, and special attacks.

In nearly 10 years on the market, the Guilty Gear series has seen several different publishers, with Majesco handling the series' US installments in recent years. However, the Guilty Gear license appears to have fallen prey to that publisher's shift toward casual games, as Accent Core will be delivered courtesy of Aksys Games.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core has not yet been rated or priced.

You won't have to look like an ass at the arcade after all. I want to see how people that game with the Wii controls too. Haven't seen how a fighting game would work anyways.

And how could I forget about the Wii Balance Board?? True that nobody is using it besides Nintendo for Wii Fit, but imagine playing an FPS with it. No more pressing a button to peek out from a corner. No more holding down R2 to dodge in Fight Night. The possibilities are almost endless.

as a social console, the wii is second to none. lots of party/multiplayer games and the entire thing with swishing the wiimote and shit pretty much screams HEY IM WITH FRIENDS WATCH ME LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE I DONT CARE IM HAVING FUN. as a GAMING console, though, i prefer the 360. very good library (mass effect, assassin's creed) and a controller that isn't a weird gimmick.

EDITwii needs fishing games. the fishing minigame in TP is more entertaining than the game itself. when they release solid fishing games i might buy it because the wiimote is fucking perfect for them.

when there's more online games it'll be great. Aslong as people don't action replay or gameshark with online games like what they do with the DS. But yeah, but a good year for nintendo, it did well for gameplay>graphics. It's a damn shame that VC is too expensive for what it's worth, I want to play Zelda:Ocarina after I finished TwiPrin. Sonic Secret Rings is awesome for graphics and gameplay. CoD3 I had the chance to compare with the 360 version, the Wii is missing alot, has slow down and the textures on the people are worse than the 360, but compare the wii'mote with 360 controller on CoD3 and it's an entirely different game, the aim on the 360 version is awefull and fiddly, but with the wii it's like the player is in full control and can do anything with a gun as in real life.

Wow, you're dumber then I thought. Any self respecting online game has cheat prevention software (FFXI and....EQ *shudder*). The only reason the DS games are easy to cheat with it because there's no dedicated software for the system that prevents it.

Finally, some people who share my feelings of the Wii. In this thread nonetheless! The VAA has way too many Wii obsessed people who go on and on about how great it is...

Okay, I spent a good 7 solid hours playing Resident Evil 4 at my friends last friday. I thought 'hey! Now maybe THIS is a game that will be fun with all i've heard!' first off, no, the graphics are not better. In fact, playing it side by side with the gamecube, i think the gamecube looked better!! Second of all, that motion sensor is CRAP. If you are too close, things dont go right. So you have to make sure to stay a distance back *this stucks for someone who, i dunno, actually wants to sit closer to the screen!!*

More so, if you dont manually AIM where you want to fire, THEN hold down the bottom to aim, the aiming will be all screwed up! This is REALLY bad when you are in the middle of a battle! I will go into my menu and switch guns, come out and prepare to fire; but what does it do? It aims to the bottom of the screen with no easy way to move the thing to the middle and shoot! And i HONESTLY dont have time to centor the thing when i have a hord of un-dead running at me or even a Gigante! At least on the gamecube version, when you held down the button to shoot it would auto centor in the middle of the screen! And seriously... you'd think after playing a game for 7 hours straight, things would get a tad easier? It took me till i got to second part of chapter 1 to have mastered the controls on the GC!

So far, the system doesnt have a single game really worth buying. People put down the PS3 for not having games; but what about the Wii?! It has even LESS!

I also have to say that the GC was my favorite. I have never truly been disapointed in nintendo until now, really. I mean, sure, they werent so successful during SOny's reign, but look at the GC! It didnt have that many games; but the few it had, were priceless.

I also have to agree on many a point Marcus made too.

Actually, you can mute the controller's speaker.

I'm having high hopes for the Wii, especially because there are all kinds of titles coming I'm really craving for. Ofcourse I want MP3, SMG and SSBB, but we shouldn't forget games like Final Fantasy, Battallion Wars 2, No More Heroes, Disaster, Mariokart Wii, Soul Calibur Legends, Fire Emblem, Tales of Symphonia and tons and tons more.
To my taste, Nintendo has the best line-up this year, with Xbox 360 as a close runner up (Mass Effect, Alan Wake, Halo 3, Bioshock, Assassins Creed, GTA IV, Rock Band and tons more).

If you don't like it don't buy it, theres no need to go absolutely nuts raving about it!
Its not like it was sold to you on false pretenses, i thought it was very clear what it was before hand, more light fun with hopefully a smattering of serious but very good games. Unlike it seems lots of people, i have better things to spend my money on then getting every new game thats released, so consoles like the Wii and GC which have only great games, are good for me because those games are REALLY great!
The comment about N64 textures is just absurd and just lessens your argument because its obviously wrong.

If its not an enclosed space friendly machine, tough; you can't say that you didn't know that when you bought it.

And as for Nintendo spitting in the eye of people who want to play serious games, what a load of crap! So a manufacturer isn't allowed to make a console aimed at more casual games without it being an insult? Do you feel so strongly that you want to play serious games and you want to play them on a Nintendo console and not another?

If you dislike it so much then sell it while there is a high demand for them! :)
