i can understand the first one, but xeno 2? that shit was awful.

I tend to lump them all together in my mind.

I also forgot Age of Wonders.  That was one of the best fantasy soundtracks I have ever heard.  Its a shame that the audio files are .it and you have to convert them to put them on a CD.

Chrono Cross was meh for me.  A few good tracks, but most of it was shit.

Chrono Cross/Trigger. Both the world themes and the intro theme for Cross were beautiful, and Trigger's Ocean Palace, Zeal, and Black Omen themes were so good I played many other games to their MIDIs. The whole game of course was a joy to listen to; up until Chrono Trigger it was my habit to turn off game sound after a few hours of playing and put on my own music but I never did for Chrono Trigger. In general I think Yasunori Mitsuda is one of the best game music composers out there, his music is actually moving, as opposed to the mildly obnoxious bgm you find in a lot of the older jRPGs (Breath of Fire 3? What the fuck did they do there, just run a tape recorder in an elevator for 30 hours?).

If you count games that play modern music, Deus Ex: Invisible War introduced me to Kidney Thieves, so major props there, and to Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for Lacuna Coil. I really liked Burnout:Revenge's music selection, which also introduced me to a bunch of bands I really should have bothered with earlier, the Killers, the Strokes, Billy Talent most notably.

Come to think of it I also spent a *lot* of hours listening to Warcraft 2 expansion's soundtrack when I wasn't playing the game, so that also belongs on the list.

"Swamped" by Lacuna Coil is definitely THE BEST ending theme ever (and it's just been added to Rock Band). "Take Me Home" by After Midnight Project in Prey is a close second. "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton is in a league all it's own, but "Swamped" after that ending just makes me feel like "hell yeah, I kick ass."
