Writing properly in English

Now now, no reason to turn into grammar nuts. "Properly Writing In English" may not be flawless grammar, but the fact of the matter is, it's still quite readable and makes sense. The topic is designed to handle very common mistakes that people make, even native English speakers... The "too", "two", and "to" section is particularly important. Please try not to poke at him too much over the thread title when its content is so useful.:)

I know ^_^ I didn't mean any offense or anything, i just love the irony.

And yes the tutorial is very helpful

Hehe nice topic, Cleveland, but I don't agree that English is hard.
Usually, I make mistakes becouse of my keyboard, not becouse I don't know. and Portuguese is... hmm... 49% harder than English. =P

You reminded me of a scene from a movie...

[Dumb Guy] "They got smart kids in Brazil! There are four-year-olds over there running around speaking Portuguese. That's a hard language to learn!"
[Other Guy] "...dude, they speak Portuguese in Brazil."
[Dumb Guy] "That's what I'm sayin'!"

OMG xD
Anyways, Portuguese is really very hard.

But of course the easier language of the world if Chinese. Why? There are over 1 billion of chineses speaking this language... xD

This makes me laugh because the title of your topic hasn't been wrote in correct English.

This makes me laugh because your post has an error as well. I love the irony. ;)

This tutorial should be really helpful. I'm glad it's been revived. It taught me one or two things. :s

"Its" is a possessive word used like "my," "your," and "their." "It's" is short for "it is."

Good examples:
Its sharp teeth make the shark a deadly predator.
It's best to stay away from sharks.

Bad examples:
The game is amazing with it's flashy graphics and everything.
Its a shame about the terrible music, though.

It is finally good to see that some people are good at grammer. Half-- Erhm.. almost ALL of the people at my school suck, including my friends. Just want to correct you on your grammer thingy. "It's" Means "it is", it is possesive, andyour second bad example is wrong. "Its a shame about the terrible music, though." Its should be "It's" Because "It is a shame about the terrible music, though." Although nobody gives a hoot lol. Besides, what is the chances of people actually taking the time to learn english "properly" everybody already understands one another, and that's all that matters, I was just born stubourn and with the gift of getting mad some reason anybody uses bad english.. wierd isn't it?

Edit: Wow... never knew there was already 7 pages before me...

Heh, if Chinese really was the easiest language to learn, then I wouldn't have spent a year in Chinese School thinking, 'I don't understand this.' And I am Chinese!

ROFL! You had me on the floor with that one! I am now being very careful about what I write so I don't end up looking silly but still, i think : I'll have blah, blah, and blah (disregard the commas) is... not wrong, but weird.

'I'll have a blah, a blah, and a blah.' Sounds better.

@ Mac: i thought WRITTEN was spelled with 2 T's :P jut messing with ya

and my english be good, i speake it and wrait it perfertcly .

I Don't think English is hard, it's VERY flawed, but not hard.

What about that "....." thing?

"I don't know what to do...."

"..." is usually used to make a statement sound depressed or sarcastic. Even Microsoft Word automatically turns 3 periods in a row into a single character.

I'm saying this because I noticed you had a sentence like that under "bad examples", and the periods were underlined.

I really like the triple-periods... My project's a very depressing game actually, so they'll be used a lot.

Cleveland, Great post! Thanks.

I am an ellipsis abuser! (the first step is admitting it, right?)

How about a section on the colon & semi-colon?
(and their use in conjuction with commas.)
I always find myself scratching my head when it comes to making lists of lists.

Be Well

P.S. My opinion: The rules are there, not to be blindly followed, but to support the primary objective of understanding clearly what the writer intended to say.

We could spend centuries arguing about this, though. Since there are more than one STANDARD english grammars. I have been tought both British and American English so I can distinguish many differences between them. (s's s' stuff. Dunno how you write in USA but in Britain s's is very wrong) In my opinion, British English is the most original (like there's such thing like original English!!! English is just sooooo full of Latin, German, French blah blah blah...) so if you really want to claim to be mr. Perfect Grammar you just have to use British English. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Well, I'm one of those guys who like to use proper and professional(to the point of annoyance) English as much as casual and slightly misspelt English and I think this thread is quite impressive, but I would personally recommend people not to go hyper on the issue.;)

Forgot something:

Never start a sentence with "And"

But thankfully, you made this, because way too many people have grammatical errors and spelling errors in their games.

If there were a Rep system, I'd rep you. ;)

I'm not sure whether this has been mentioned yet, but with some of these points about the correct way of writing in English, people should be aware that if they're writing speech for the characters, a few of these may not apply. For example, a lot of average joes almost certainly would likely say "Where's the dog at?".
